Lauren was excellent! She covered everything from potty training to obedience and made sure we understood the why’s behind it. She had my pup sitting and listening in the first 2 minutes. We signed him up for 5 additional classes. I can’t wait to work with Lauren while I continue to grow and bond with my Chihuahua!

Mr. Mouton was hired to train our 4 month old puppy (and us) on basics. Our puppy had not yet demonstrated any "bad behaviors" but we definitely wanted him to start out with a firm foundation of leash walking and obedience. Maury took him in for 2 weeks and delivered a calm and obedient dog to us at the conclusion.

Stephanie was fantastic with Crown. He was a little nipping puppy that wanted to chew on everything AND everyone in the house before she came out for our 1st session and now he's a well behaved little boy (some of it is still a work in progress but the progress with only 3 sessions is INCREDIBLE). My husband and I decided to use Walk of Life Dog Training because of Stephanie's flexibility with our schedule - we both work long hours and don't always have congruent time off and Stephanie was willing to figure out a time that worked best for the both of us! Crown, our puppy, absolutely LOVED his time with her and it was amazing to see how expanding his mind through training was eliminating the unwanted behavior that we'd experienced prior to training with Stephanie. Additionally, she is so incredibly kind and just wants to make sure that your life with your dog is as happy as possible! We would absolutely recommend Stephanie and Walk of Life Dog Training to anyone that's interested in getting their dog trained - puppy or not, I know Stephanie can teach you some tricks and effectively address any concerns you have with your pup! Thanks a bunch!

Nancy has been such a life saver for my husband and I! She has only been working with our puppy, Remi for a month now, and I can already see such a huge difference in her behavior, manners, and obedience. The part I love most is that she meets at your home. Meeting at our house enables us to use her methods and trainings in the area our dog is the most, at home! I have been able to watch the way she trains and directs my dog and mimic that, and it has changed so much for the better! The counter surfing has decreased drastically, her basic obedience skills are close to perfect, and we are still working towards other behavior goals such as jumping. Nancy is so sweet and caring to us and our dog. She gives out her personal number to you in case of emergency, any needs, or questions you might have. I would highly recommend her to any friends I have looking for someone to help with your dogs behaviors! Thanks Nancy!

Over the last year, I have been fortunate to have Hilton Butler from K-9 Bootcamp train my puppy so he could become a therapy dog. From the first encounter with the Butler family I knew my dog would be in good hands. They understood the purpose of his training and knew what he would have to learn in order to become a therapy dog for kids with special needs. I was greatly relieved to know that my dog would be staying in their house with their children. This meant a lot to me since my dog spent 6 weeks being trained. To know that he would not be neglected in a kennel on a large property was a huge relief. Auggie was immediately welcomed by all family members and was treated like one of their own pets. He was in loving hands from the moment he walked in the door. I felt that Hilton was able to apply various protocols to meet my dog’s needs due to his extensive background with K-9 training in the military, police, and service dog environments. Hilton demonstrates a firm hand while training, but uses positive reinforcement as well, which was needed for my dog. He ensures that you know the protocols to carry over in the home environment after training is complete. If there was any question regarding Auggie’s behaviors at home, Hilton was available by email, phone, and even conducted follow up sessions at my house. K-9 Boot Camp is a professional and loving dog training facility. They excel in providing individual treatment to meet your specific training goals. Customer service and compassion for their work shines through. Hilton, took time on a Sunday in November to drive all the way to Auggie’s therapy test for moral support. Auggie passed with flying colors and now comes to work everyday as a certified therapy dog. He is happy in his new role making sure all kids have a smile on their face while receiving therapy! We could not have done it with out Hilton.

I initially chose Zoom Room to enroll my 8 week old puppy into puppy preschool for socialization and basic obedience. This was the best decision! Heather is great and my puppy just passed his AKC S.T.A.R. puppy test! He will now be moving on to puppy obedience and we will definitely keep coming back here! There is outstanding agility equipment here and my puppy loves learning the agility course mixed in with his obedience training! A great way to keep them engaged and learning and also super fun for the owners too! I highly recommend coming to Zoom Room for your dog/puppy training needs! We will keep coming!

After shopping around looking at different dog trainers, I'm SO happy I went with Pamela! Over the course of the few weeks, she taught me so much about how my body language and tone of voice communicate different things to my dog and how to use that to teach him obedience and manners. Not only did my dog master the commands, I learned how to be in control and take leadership of walks and day to day life. Pamela offered great advice and insight when I needed it and I would highly recommend her to anyone! Thank you!

She has been great. She showed us how to handle excessive barking with our Maltese. We will do a few more sessions at home with her. I have also enrolled my Cockapoo puppy in her puppy obedience class up in Melissa. I would diffently recommend her services.

I appreciate Brian's approach to dog training. He establishes a relationship with the dog to create a desire within the dog to want to please him. I also believe that takes time. Every other trainer I talked to only wanted the dog for two weeks, which in my opinion is not enough time to really teach a dog obedience. I have been visiting Brian and Harry once a week and I'm very pleased with Harry's progress. I'm also learning how to reinforce the training once Harry comes back home. Brian has been a pleasure to work with and a very competent trainer.

My dog Bruno is a young rowdy pup, very smart but also very strong willed. After attempting to watch You Tube videos and train him myself, it seemed like I was getting nowhere. I was at my wits end and discouraged. I needed serious help! I brought my Bruno to Canine perceptions after reading good reviews elsewhere and needing help with his behaviors. He went through the 6 week off leash program and graduated yesterday. 1st, I'm very happy to have him home for Christmas but the change is so noticeable! I knew he would be super excited to be home and expected bad behaviors once he left. Only one day, but the change is extreme. The Staff of Canine perceptions returned my baby not only well cared for, but well mannered! The training they gave me put everything into perspective and gave me the understanding I needed to continue Bruno's training. I could not begin to explain how grateful I am to them.

So far Chris has been very professional as he patiently gives you every detailed explanation through out each session making sure we are on the same page and levels of understanding the process of obedience. I am very pleased with how quickly Bentley's behavior has changed in such short timing, can't wait till his next session. Thanks Chris!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
