I was contact by Marcial from Medina Construction & Roofing and two other contractors within 10 minutes after I posted on Thumbtack that I needed a Reroof on my house, the next day he did an inspection on my roof and provided me with a detail estimate for the job and included reference from BBB and Thumbtack, plus a certificate of liability insurance. After reading some reviews and getting two other estimates, I decided to go with Medina Const. for the best price. The job was schedule whitin one week and the work was done in a full day and a half on the entire roof. Marcial is the "man" he is hands on with his crew, he actually is part of the crew, clean job from start to finish, no problem adding extra work for the terrace, and upgrading to 30 year shingle. I would definitely recommend Medina Const. for any roofing project.

I had a kitchen remodel including the fix of the floor in the kitchen. This company is very professional, friendly and a willingness to listen to what you want and need. They will also give you their ideas of what they think would look nicer. The ultimate decision is yours. They do have a great eye and taste. They also keep you informed as to what is going to happen that day and the days to come. Constant communication with them. I had a wonderful experience with this company. I love everything they did. I would recommend them to everyone I know.

I've delayed the project, but when the house is not rented again in a few months I will use Carsa Construction for the remodel. CJ is very professional, responsive and his quote was very thorough and easy to understand and to modify. Called his references and they were extremely happy with the work he did for them.

I was in a panic the night I discovered that our water heater was spewing water and flooding our garage floor. It was making loud clicking and growling noises, and I was scared it was going to burst. To make matters worse, my husband was out of town. I said a prayer and asked God to direct me to a good, caring, and cost-reasonable repairman. Of all the quotes I received through Thumbtack, I chose Y & J Construction. Johnny promised to show up at 7am the next day, and at 7am, he was ringing my doorbell. He was my God-send. He was professional, highly skilled, thorough, and patient. He quickly removed the damaged water heater. He then followed me to Home Depot and guided my purchase of the best water heater for my home’s needs. My old water heater was 17 years old, so he had to do some fancy piping/wiring to get the new model to work properly. Before leaving, he had me test the faucets to make sure the water reached the right temperature. He also loaded up the old water heater and new packaging and carried it away. I have never taken the time to write a review until now. I’m telling you: this guy was nothing less than amazing. He swooped in like Superman! It was so refreshing to have a repairman to just focus on the job-at-hand and not try to sell you services and equipment you don’t need. I will DEFINITELY use Y & J Construction again for my plumbing needs, and I HIGHLY recommend them.

I had a number of issues needed to be fixed from leveling the house all the way to the roof. I have never met a more knowledgeable person in the remodeling field. This man is genuinely a good person, which is very hard to come. I would be honored to have him do future work on my home.

We needed to have a window replaced while selling our home and Sullins Construction Company did a great job overall. I needed the work done quick and Joel came out and took care of everything while we waited for the window replacement. Since we had an older home the window glass was not easy to find without replacing the entire window to include the brick frame and Joel was able to locate replacement glass to replace it. Working with him was easy and he was very responsive to questions. The cost was reasonable and the added factor was that I was dealing with him long distance since we no longer lived in the home we were selling and he made it easy to coordinate getting the work done. We would use Sullins Construction Company again!

It was great working with Ever. This was our first time getting any remodeling done and he made the experience very easy. He was able to come out to the house and give us an estimate very quickly and got his guys started just a few days later. During the process, he was good about communicating and helping us resolve any problems that came up. We had the whole house painted and carpet and laminate installed. I highly recommend using this company for any remodeling.

Hire this company! Edwin is very professional and he and his team were great to work with and always communicative and prompt. Their work was great quality. I hired him for a number of various jobs and each were completed with precision. He installed a built in mud room, a new cabinet coffee bar for our kitchen, installed a vent-a-hood, put a granite countertop in 1 bathroom and built an in closure for our cat box. We have slowly remodeled our home over the last 5 years and worked with a number of contractors and Edwin and his team are by far the best!

I had completely lost faith in hiring out any help when it comes to remodeling this condo I just bought a couple months ago. Learning as I go along I started stumbling when I tried tiling my shower. Found out about thumbtack from a friend and it linked me up with Jose and his crew. Nice group of guys, that showed up at 7 am for 3 days straight until the my shower was tiled and complete. I had 2 nightmare remodeling experiences prior to this and Jose saved the day and made my week. Shower looks great. Will hire again without hesitation on my next bathroom in a couple months. Thanks for showing me there are dependable and reasonably priced contractors out there. Do yourself and hire them! They work hard and do things right. No cutting corners.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
