I am so happy that we found Mike at Lone Star Lawn Care & Services through Thumbtack. Mike and his crew took out the old deck from our backyard and put in a cement patio all in 3 days time! The guys worked in our Austin almost 100° June weather from 9-5 to get the job done, and I can't thank them enough. Mike is a great guy to work with. He came out and talked with me about my ideas (and dreams for the yard) and was able to steer me in the right direction once he knew a rough budget. He prepared a quote for us and then patently waited while we decided. We chose Mike for our home project, and we will contact him in the future when we have more yard projects to do! Thanks Mike and Lone Star Care & Services for our new outdoor living space.

Manny is friendly, courteous, and very knowledgeable about his business. He quoted a very reasonable price on trimming two large trees in my front yard and removing three trees (one large, two small) in my backyard. The previous amounts I paid another reputable tree service company is comparable to the what I paid Angel Tree Care Services but I definitely got more for my money with ATCS. Manny's team showed up as scheduled and did a great job reflecting what was on the written proposal. The trees that were trimmed look great, and the other trees were removed as planned. Clean up was excellent. I highly recommend contacting Manny for your tree services. The quality of work and overall experience is equal if not better.

I am so happy that I used Angel’s Tree Service. I’ve used other tree services around town that were completely unaffordable and unhelpful. Miguel from Angel’s was very informative and offered me a wonderful price for all the work he did. They showed up on time for a consultation and got the job done the same day. Five stars! I highly recommend this company.

Jonathan trimmed some large branches and fixed my fence that was falling down, including the gate. He's very professional, and the work was excellent! He was on time and communicated clearly before and during the job. I will be hiring him again next month to do some landscaping. I would recommend Jonathan for any type of handyman job. He should be very proud of the work he does. He was also very affordable which is an added bonus!

Kyle power washed my driveway, front walk, the front and back porch and the ceiling of the front porch and back porch. There are a few things that I would like to comment on: He was timely, professional, friendly, and he did a great job! His price was also reasonable. There were terrible stains on the cement walking up to the house and in the drive way. Those stains are gone and it looks awesome. The back porch had horrible grease stains that have been there for years, not all of them were able to come up, but they look 100% better than how they looked before. Since I had been looking for a lawn care service as well, I am actually hiring him to maintain my lawn. You won't regret using his services!

Worked with Danny to get the estimate/bid & schedule for cutting down a very large shade tree in my backyard. I went with this company because their bid was very competitive compared to 3 other companies. We did have some delay in getting the job scheduled but in all fairness it was during the time of the recent floods in Austin & surrounding areas so I'm sure every tree company has been busy. Danny sent 3 guys from his team & they had the tree down and all the brush cleaned up & hauled away in 3.5 hours; they also removed another small tree for me at a very nominal fee. The workers were nice and well-mannered and did a professional job. I would recommend them to anyone needing tree services.

Lisa and Jeff did a great job trimming the low branches of our tree. It just took a few swipes of Jeff's chainsaw and the job was pretty much done. They also cleaned up and hauled away all the branches. A fair price for a great job, and we will definitely be calling on them again.

I put out and add in thumbtack to get an oak tree in the front yard trimmed, a big privacy shrub removed and an average sized red oak in the backyard removed. A few agencies replied and all seemed like fine prices. When Mr. Salas responded and said no additional charge for the stump grinder for the removal of the backyard tree (all other agencies charged $100-$150). On top of that, no additional charge for hauling the stuff off (again other agencies charged extra). We were planning on doing it on a Saturday but it turned out mother nature wasn't going to let us. He let me know on Tuesday if Wednesday would work, I said sure. He came at 8:00 and I told him exactly what I wanted. It's always worrisome when you leave a job and you're not there. I was not disappointed when I got back home from work. Everything that we talked about was done exemplary. I would recommend New Day Tree Service to all my neighbors, friends and family.

Freddie was great! As a corporate exec, I recognize qualities in people some may miss. Freddie has drive, determination and a strong work ethic that was instantaneously obvious to me. He is professional and very aggressively priced. He showed up not a minute late and worked tirelessly until the job was completed. He left zero mess behind and cleaned up even messes that existed before he arrived. I am very happy and will refer Ismael Tree Service to many! Thank you Freddie. You impressed a stoic!

Very pleased with the work and Francisco is very kind and easy to work with. It was a big job and they were fast but careful and it looks great. We ended up adding on a second job that day for a tree and other brush removal.

Jesus called me 10 min. after I placed the requirements on Thumbtack. I knew exactly what I wanted as we had other side of the fence done with other neighbors, sent him exact measurements and pole and wood requirements. I asked if he could start the job the next day as I was leaving town the weekend and wanted it done before then. He told me that he would check if he could move some jobs around to accommodate me. He wrote back to me with a very competitive price on Thumback and mentioned that he can be at my place the next day at 9 AM, confirmed the measurements and confirmed the same price he gave me. Within 2 days the old fence was removed, new poles installed and the fence (100 ft) was replaced. Its a family run business, Jesus his uncle Julian and sons. Very friendly people. They also trimmed some trees touching the roof and hauled that away together with some other extra lumber I no longer needed in that garage that I needed to get rid of and did not have a truck/trailer to haul. In short, this crew helped me solve 3 jobs on one job, what a deal. I highly recommend them. ps. Their price by far beats any of the other quoted I received and the job was even completed before I received most other quotations.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
