I had some curtain rods that needed to be installed. Michael was extremely prompt and was very responsive to questions prior to the job. On the job, he had great attention to detail and took the time to make sure to install the rods to my specifications. They look great. He took extra care to make sure the rods will hold firm even with two kids pulling on the curtains! I will definitely call Michael again for future projects at my home.

5 stars for courteous, professional service with good communication, and all out effort. 3 stars for moving technique. 2 out of 3 pieces ended up with not-insignificant markings / abrasions on them. The damage was sustained likely as a result of getting 'stuck' in the stairwell, as well as moving the furniture on the concrete without a moving blanket underneath. The sofa in particular was quite heavy, as it had two recliners built into it. However, it had been moved 3 times prior without sustaining any significant damage to the leather. These guys have the strength to get the job done, but they need to do a little homework on how to move difficult, heavy pieces in a safe manner. They will save their backs and your furniture if they spend a little more time thinking things through rather than just trying to muscle it, which doesn't always work with big, heavy pieces. In the end, I would consider hiring them again, with the caveat that they have studied up on various moving techniques to minimize damage.

We had limestone garden beds and walkway built in the front yard, a flagstone patio built in the back and new fencing. Mike and his crew did a great job. Mike was excellent at communicating throughout the whole process. He was easy to work with and checked in several times throughout the day (and was always immediately available through texting). Everything was cleaned up and neatly put away each night. His estimate was very competitive and the project stayed on budget. We would not hesitate to use Lone Star Lawn Care & Services in the future. I already have more projects in mind!!!

Mustafa built and assembled 2 large furniture pieces for me. One was a murphy bed and the other was a floating TV wall unit. He was always on time, professional and even cleaned up the work area after he was done. The two pieces were very large and complex to build, but Mustafa is very experienced with furniture assembly and attaching pieces securely to the wall. His work is professional quality, he really knows what he is doing! I will definitely be hiring him for future projects!

Wyatt put together our playscape in a timely and professional manner. The directions said it would take 2 people 16 hours, but he was able to complete it by himself in less than that. I would recommend him for your assembly projects.

I inherited a horrible backyard with my new house. American Arbors came in with innovative ideas that absolutely transformed the yard. They took great care to ensure the planting and the plants were perfect (the person who chooses the plants is fantastic) and the follow through was amazing. They even stopped by after the project to make sure everything was thriving. I couldn't be happier.

Jay came over to assemble several pieces of furniture that I had just gotten shipped to my apartment. I've put a lot of those sorts of pieces together myself, but a dresser, two nightstands, and two counter stools would take me a lot longer than hiring someone who's got more experience building these pieces. Jay was on time, friendly, and got right to work. When I realized one of the nightstands hadn't shipped with the other, he offered to come back when it arrived to finish the job. And he did! Would definitely hire again and recommend for your projects.

Manuel and his team did such an amazing job on my daughters nursery ceiling and walls! The walls and ceiling are absolutely perfect, and as an interior designer by trade, I have high standards. My husband and I are hoping to build a home this fall and plan to contact Manuel again for all the drywall in the new house. Not only is the finished quality top notch, but they also took precautions to make sure the room was taped off to reduce dust from getting all over the rest of the house. Highly recommend.

Allison is a miracle worker! I originally hired her to pack up my entire kitchen, and then unpack it at my new house. The service she provided was above and beyond what I originally anticipated. She packed my entire kitchen in 2 hours. Then utilized her personal vehicle to move the items over to my new house. THEN she unpacked my items and organized them beautifully. She brought a ton of kitchen-type organization materials (bins, labels, baskets, etc.) to utilize in my home IF I wanted them. Based on the needs of my new kitchen, she sold the agreed upon materials to me at a very discounted price. This was such an INCREDIBLE service. It was like having a HomeGoods in the trunk of her car. She also made a target run to get other things we agreed were necessary to get my kitchen in tip top shape. Overall, I paid her for 10 hours of work plus the cost of goods. Absolutely worth every penny. At the beginning she asked me what my budget was, which I thought was great. I didn't have a firm number in mind for this project but I thought it was wonderful that she was willing to build the plan around my budget if necessary. I would absolutely recommend Allison to anyone for packing, unpacking, and organization. She is kind, honest, talented, and fun to be around. I cannot overstate how much I appreciate what she did for me the past two days.

Ross Remodeling has access to a number of professionals to meet your needs. We hired them to paint the interior rooms of our home. They did a great job at an affordable price. We later hired them to build out our master closet. Another great job was done. You will be pleased with their work and prices.

I had hired Chris for my basement remodel. I'm located in Portland but I was told, Chris was here visiting family and had some extra time to complete a project while he was here. I've never used Thumbtack before but the quotes I was getting from local companies were just way too high to consider. Chris responded on the first day and helped walk me through the extensive amount of work needed that I was completely unaware of. His knowledge of the project and what was needed, seemed like he had experience and was able to walk me through it in a way I could understand. He was able to offer much better pricing than others because I had a very lean budget to work with. Chris did his very best to work with me even though I must have been a nightmare to work with, but Chris's was a champ. He built interior walls on a sloping floor, created a beautiful reclaimed wood wall and used the left over to build out a cedar closet for guest use. The bulk of the project was soundproofing my ceiling wit Rozul insulation and over 500 square feet of ceiling drywall and texture. It was a 2-week project from start to finish, a little longer than I had hoped, but I was happy with Chris because he was doing it all himself. I just wish he lived in Portland. I would hire him all the time. Super Impressive!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
