Dry wall repair, patching, texturing, painting. We recently moved into a new home and had custom closet built. The company took out the parts installed by the builder, but does not offer dry wall repair service. I hired Angel out of 4 companies that did estimate for the drywall repair. Angel offered a reasonable price that was comparable to others. He was accountable, reliable, sincere, and did an excellent job. He showed and updated me on his progress while he was repairing the dry walls. I would definitely hire him again if we need a handyman in the future.

Whole house interior painting including popcorn ceiling removal as well as painting kitchen cabinets. Good and efficient crew with reasonable pricing. Ms. Ross, the owner has design background and excellent advice on what works well in color selections. Very good attention to detail. In addition to painting, she produced a very competitive bid for tiling ~740 sq feet 12x24 of floor tiles. The tiling crew she provided installed the tile first with good preparation then installed tiles with very fine grout lines as requested. Overall, very impressed and would hire again for future work.

Ron and his workers did a FANTASTIC job on my cabinets! They discarded all my old cabinet doors (kitchen/bath), sanded down the cabinet facing, built new doors in their shop, stained all wood to match, and reassembled everything. Now it looks like I have brand new cabinets. All this work was done for a very affordable price. Ron explained everything before we got started -- he showed me examples of the doors and stain colors and made sure I knew what to expect and would be happy with the finished product. Because they built the cabinets in their shop they were in and out of my condo in less than 2 days. I work in construction myself and will say these guys are A-1 professionals. I already have more work lined up for them once I am financially able to get it done. VERY VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER.

Initially, I hired Kirk to do my deck that needed to be refinished. He was very professional, prompt, and detailed with the work done. I decided not to only do the deck work with him, but also staining my kitchen cabinets. What a difference a color can make! Kirk provided great insight on picking out a good color for the cabinets as well as adding some really cool looking pull handles to finish the look. Overall I could not be happier with the work Kirk and his team did and definitely will reach out to him for any future projects.

Chris recently did a complete remodel of our kitchen and bathroom. He did an outstanding job and I am thrilled with the results! This included installing a slate floor, installing new cabinets; installing backsplash; and a new sink. Chris is very thorough and pays attention to detail. He's been in business for a long time and has great ideas/suggestions as well. He also was very good to clean up after the job and didn't leave a mess. I highly recommend!

Joe completed a complete bathroom and living room remodel for us. He was able to creatively solve the problems with our layout and we couldn't be more pleased with the result. He later updated our kitchen cabinets and laid our hardwood floors. His attention to detail is fantastic! There were no surprises with price or timeline. His experience gives him a well rounded opinion about what will work or won't.

We were very happy with the job Jeff and Sam did on our home. They did an excellent job installing baseboards, installed our new dishwasher and denoed and installed our new kitchen cabinets. We highly recommend them and we would use them again. When others said they could not do the job, Jeff and Sam were able to do it.

Tom is the handyman everyone is looking for. Polite, knowledgeable and professional. He cleaned up and painted my kitchen and bathroom after water damage which included removing popcorn ceiling and painting cabinets. He has shown expertise in every task. His prices are a little higher than some but his pride in perfection makes him worth every cent. I will never hire anyone else for any project since I met Tom.

We needed to get our kitchen cabinets refinished. My husband found Tru-Design Interiors online. Donny, the owner came and gave us a very reasonable quote. He was very diligent and professional with his work, and the results are amazing. We were highly satisfied with the work and would highly recommend the services. Donny, also refinished and repaired a 50 yr. old table for us. The table was solid cherry and had been in the family all those years. It was scratched and the finish was impossible to clean. Donny turned it into a brand new table. I would use Tru-Design Interiors again, because the workmanship was great..Thank you Donny!!!!

I love the large storage cabinet Justin built to fit a specific space in my house. It's exactly what I wanted. He came to my house to see the space, took measurements and we talked about what I wanted. He built a beautiful shaker style cabinet at home and then installed it where I needed it. The whole turn around time was excellent and the price was fair. He was great to work with and I recommend him highly!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
