ACA upgraded our home theater and whole house audio. Chris and Dana were great to work with providing excellent technical and design advise. They really spent a lot of time to understand our needs, and were very flexible through the process to help us understand options and get us exactly what we wanted. We couldn't be happier with the job and the service. I highly recommend ACA.

I had been stood up by another professional for an entry way wallpaper project the day before an event and contacted Craig via thumbtack in desperation. Craig carefully reviewed my project and decided that he could get it done in time. He worked very late hours to carefully prep my damaged walls and then did an amazing job with the wallpaper. I love the end result and can't say enough about how grateful I am to Craig and how pleased I am with the whole experience. Austin is lucky to have a professional like Craig that communicates, is timely and does beautiful work at a fair price!

He is incredibly knowledgeable, he works quickly, and the quality of his work is nothing short of perfect. I am in love with how my projects turned out.

We hired Murphy to consult on all the details of our home renovation, including picking out materials, flooring, paint colors, lighting, and furniture. She was incredibly helpful in navigating the hundreds of options that are out there for each item, and steered us towards selections that were true to our original vision for the house. Murphy is very easy going, straightforward, and fun to work with. And her design sense is incredible! We would absolutely recommend Murphy for any interior design or decorating job.

Heather Toolin worked with us on a multi-family project. Her eye for color and scale shows the depth of her experience in this business. She was quick to put meetings together, make selections and put packages together while still giving time for client input and keeping an eye on the project budget. Our experience with Heather as a design professional was exactly that...professional. Overall it was a great collaborative effort with beautiful results.

Anne has done many jobs for me, removed wallpaper, then textured, and fauxed my kitchen, master bath. She also painted a suede texture in my spare bath and bedroom. What sets Anne apart from others is her nack for mixing her own paints on site tweaking it to perfection. She even painted my wall plates in the kitchen to match the small stone accent stripe perfectly, you can even tell it's not stone. As an added accent in the bathroom, Anne painted a vine of flowers. Anne listens to what you want and if she feels there would be a better choice she politely suggests without being pushy or knocking your ideas. All jobs were completed in a timely manner and she cleans up after. Anne also can rearrange items to make them look like a picture from Better Homes & Gardens. I would highly recommend Eye on Design for any type of interior design. I've also seen her fix other designers mistakes with amazing results. A real talent since it's twice as hard to correct a color error than to start fresh. Anne truly has an "Eye on Design." I have recommend Anne to many of my friends and all have been extremely pleased with the finished work and the quote.

I am a professional photographer who works with many stagers in the Austin area and I have to say Luxury Lane Staging's style, inventory and detail are top notch. The colors flow from room to room, and each room seems to tell a story. I would highly recommend them to anyone who needs a professional team to stage their home.

When I was first introduced to Montana I could tell she wasn’t an average designer. She was passionate about quality over quantity, pieces that would last years instead of just a few months. She was keen on sourcing locally and not from a box store. I needed someone who was up for a challenge and who wouldn’t follow the latest so called trend. She delivered. Walking me through the process in the at home consultation, gives regular updates and 3D perspective. I was especially impressed. My home is functional, beautifully created and uniquely me. If you are looking for someone who goes above and beyond for her clients, not just in design but in education of the pieces and process than you have found the right designer. I will continue to recommend her to all my family and friends. Thank you Montana for giving me a space that I truly love.

Victoria helped me with color choices (there is not just one 'white'), moving and placing art, moving and removing furniture for better flow and usability, and she really helped me figure out how I wanted the rooms to FEEL. Oh yes, ORGANIZATION!! She helped maximize and better utilize my kitchen spaces, pantry and drawers and we created a coffe/tea bar that is now a welcoming useable area.

Logynn knows exactly what she is doing. Without knowing me, and without being able to visit my home, she was able to pinpoint exactly what was going on in my life from the floor plan and photos I sent her. She gave specific, individualized recommendations that started producing results in hours. She also helped educate me to understand how Feng Shui works so that I can do some things for myself. Logynn is friendly, and professional, and fun to work with.

The job was a major remodel of a 2.5 million soft contemporary in Laguna Beach, California. Cindy has an innate ability to visualize a space in new ways that others hadn't contemplated. Her selection of materials and colors and accents complimented the environment and the structure in a subtle but sophisticated way. We moved the kitchen and opened up the entry to an expansive ocean view originally blocked by a kitchen wall. The materials and color pallets were soft contemporary including custom color integrated polished cement floors with stainless 5' by 5' expansion joints, an Italian imported rift quarter sawn white oak kitchen cabinetry with contemporary Italian hardware and sand blasted glass upper cabinet doors, a back-painted glass backsplash wall with all Gaggenau appliances, custom stainless steel countertops with a 5" reveal made in Italy with a seamless double sink, an in-counter kitchen machine by Gaggenau; all European Philppe Stark toiletry (with in-wall tanks); Hansgrohe faucets made in Germany, built in cabinetry made from unique sustainable reconstituted wood (with glass panes) and spot lighting, color impregnated and waterproofed allowing us to use the product for wet countertops and floating bar-top as well. Portuguese limestone slab imported and used to clad the bar and to tie it into the matching 12 x 24 tiles used throughout the bathrooms (wall to wall). Stainless steel countertop sink bowls were installed on waterproof reconstituted wood countertops with 12" vertical chrome spouts imported from Germany. The house was a showpiece and was the subject of an extensive photo shoot paid for by Bosch Seimens Home Appliances for publication and advertisements for their Gaggenau brand. The home was featured in several design publications and on the cover of Space magazine.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

        • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
        • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
        • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
        • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

        • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
        • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
        • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
        • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
