About this pro

How does your service stand out?

There are not many people who do what I do. It is very individualized. I work with individuals on what they want to learn at the pace they learn at. I am very patient.

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

I love the people I meet. I meet people from all places in life. I don't have many really young customers because they don't need my services, but from age 40 and up I have worked with lots of men and women from different backgrounds.

Flexibility. Janice follows the student's needs, answering in an appropriate way to the questions, w/o forcing her needs/preferences on the student. If she doesn't have an answer, she'll look into it and deliver it either via e-mail or at the following lesson. Daniela de Falco

Janice is very kind & encouraging. I felt comfortable the first time I talked to her on the phone. Janice understands that many adults my age are not as proficient with computers as our children are. Janice is easy to work with & very knowledgeable. I will continue to take classes with Janice until I feel like my computer skills are up to speed.

I give Janice three cheers for her extensive knowledge and endless patience. One cheer for her help with computers, another cheer for her help with email and a third for her help with cell phones. She makes learning about technology fun!

I have utilized Janice to teach tech classes to senior adults for over 2 years. She is knowledgeable and understandable, patient and kind, and always succeeds in helping people walk out with a better understanding and more competence than before!

Janice is an excellent teacher. Janice worked with me on learning different computer skills. Janice is kind and is very patient but most of all she is very knowledgeable and literate in what she teaches, computers. Janice ensure success for learning by the teaching skills that she employ. I would and have referred Janice to many people.

I am 77 years old and was having extreme difficulty switching to my new computer. Janice helped me understand and become proficient with my MAC. She was patient, instructive, and very professional. I would not hesitate to recommend her to anyone who needed help with their computer. Sincerely, Pat Coughlin

Q&A

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I take some online courses and do regular reading. If there is a problem I cannot solve I learn how to do it. I write a weekly blog http://helpimnotageek.blogspot.com and often do research on the subjects I write about.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your service? If so, please share the details here.
My regular charge when I come out to your home is $40 an hour. Twice a week I have groups in my home where I charge $20 per person. If there are more than three people the price goes down. There are some customers who have subscribed to me for $35 a month and call or have me come over to help them when they need it.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I was a teacher and became a Technology teacher who trained both teachers and students. I loved it, but often the technology support person is the first to go when the budget gets tight. Having my own business allows me to be flexible with my time and I don't have anyone who lays me off.
What types of customers have you worked with?
This is a hard one. Because people I work with are all individuals there have been all sorts of things and nothing stands out as the most common. I think maybe organizing files on the computer is the most common because it even comes up when we are doing other things.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I have been working with a woman who is going back to school at St. Edwards for the last year. I have seen her make SO MUCH progress. She sometimes says to me, "you taught me that" and I don't remember teaching her. She is having success at school and yesterday (5/20/2014) made business cards she can print.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
If you have something you want to learn hire me for an hour to see how it goes. I will be honest with you if your problem is more technical than I do (You need a Geek.) or if a class would be better for you.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
I wish they all knew that they are smarter than computers. Computers would not do anything if people did not make them.
