We really wanted to give Robert a good review. We liked him and we were hoping we had found our handyman for the future. We hired Robert to update our front entrance. Tasks were to paint the front door, switch out the address numbers and paint the pendant light on the front porch and replace the locks and handles on the front door. He did a good job on the numbers, light, and handles, but the front door was a HUGE disappointment. It was cold that day so he was having difficulty with his sprayer. When he left he expressed concern about how it would dry and said it 'might need touch up". I wasn;t there so I didnt see the door until the next day. The door didn't just need 'touch up". The paint job is full of lumps, bumps and streaks and has patches with no paint. Furthermore, we found overspray on the insides of the doors, on the brick exterior, on the porch and paint splattered on the driveway. Also, when he removed the dropcloths plastic he had taped on the door frame. the tape removed chucks of paint from the trim around the door. When I told Robert that the door did not simply need "touch up" and that it would need to be completely sanded and repainted and that the clean up needed to be done where paint was spilled/removed, he said he '"completely agreed". He then said he was going to have to CHARGE US $100 to clean up the mess he made. That was really disappointing. We thought we hired a professional to give us a professinally painted door. We definitely did not get a professionally painted door, and I would have expected a professional to stand by his work and deliver what he promised. It really didnt make sense to pay him more when he did not provide what we paid for in the first place. As a compromise, we offered him $50 for the time to re-do the door and offered another $50 for some other small projects around the house, and offered him another chance to earn our business. Robert never responded to our request. So, now we are starting over, looking for a handyman who can deliver professionalism and earn our business.

We are so happy to have found Mustafa and will definitely call him again for future projects. He is polite and courteous and really good at his job! We hired him to put together a ping pong table and he did a great job! He also ended up fixing our refrigerator door that had been bugging us for months! I highly recommend Mustafa!

Tim was courteous, quick to schedule us in, and highly competent. He fixed the weatherproofing under two doors and fixed a lock on the front door--and was quick to determine the issues and figure out how to fix them.

Michael did a great job re-hanging two doors in my house. He was very prompt in answering questions during the initial bid, punctual in arriving for the work, and I was shocked at how low his hourly rate was. He did excellent work, and I would happily hire him again should the need arise.

Mario, gave me an honest estimate and pointed out the problem with my ceiling. He fixed my issue on short notice and did an awesome job. He also threw in an extra, when he fixed my front door on his way out (without being asked or charged). I will definitely keep Mario top of mind when I need future repairs done to my home.

Okay so the job I asked for was admittedly simplified, but when Bill and Tony showed up they immediately sized up the job and began work immediately. They removed the existing cabinets and placed them in my garage for later use. Then they installed the new light fixtures, patched and painted the wall and installed the new cabinets. I was impressed at this point, but when the Master Electrician came to inspect the electrical work, I was amazed! My wife is so happy with the work that I have been given permission to hire Fixed again to install the old cabinets in my garage! Stay tuned, guys! And great touch with the door mat and shoe covers! That was the icing on the cake for my wife! Thank again!

We hired Felipe to help us remodel our bathroom. We wanted to remove the tub unit and install a standing shower. We hired Felipe based on his sheer honesty about the cost of the project as well as his ability to begin the project as soon as possible. He charged us only for the labor of removing the tub unit (and hauling the pieces away), and the installation of the new shower, including the tiling. All of the expenses came out of our pocket, so we purchased the tile and door on our own time. Any of the other materials needed (concrete, siding, grout, etc) Felipe purchased and billed us for later. He showed us every single receipt for anything he bought at the time of reimbursement. It was all at retail prices (he bought everything from Home Depot). He also picked up the door from Home Depot for us, as it was unable to fit in our car, at no extra cost. At the end of each day he told me exactly what he and his son (the only people working the job) did and exactly what his plans were for the next day. If there was going to be a delay of any kind, he let us know right away and made it known that it was not going to change the price that we agreed upon at the beginning of the project at all. If you are having any bathroom work done in your home, I HIGHLY recommend this man. We are extremely satisfied with the completed project and the entire process. We will definitely be hiring Felipe in the future should we want to remodel our second bathroom.

Tom repaired the drip guard on our shower door for a great price. He even re-caulked it and drilled holes into it to prevent it from coming off again. I will definitely use him again.

Jason Ewing with Trim Austin was asked to finish out a shed into a liveable space, sheetrocking walls and ceiling after stubbing for plumbing and electrical, installing a sliding door, a window unit and even creating closet. He did all of the flooring and went back to install the ceiling fan and doors. He then made it ultra nice with is speciality - trim and millwork. All were done per specifications in a timely and professional manner. We are totally impressed with the work of Trim Austin and would recommend Jason Ewing to anyone needing trim or millwork. Thanks Jason for making this project attainable - now my office away from home (in the backyard).

This one gets a WOW. You would think "a locksmith is a locksmith" but no. This was a fantastic Thumbtack experience. I needed a lock reinstalled, the doors rekeyed, and new keys made ASAP. They were easy to schedule in my narrow time window. Technician Mark and helper srtived precisely on time, and were friendfly, polite and very very professional. They did the job for exactly what was quoted, explained the process, and noticed/repaired a few extra things that needed attention. I am 110% satisfied. Highly recommended.

James is a skilled, hardworking, trustworthy carpenter. He took down walls, framed a new wall, framed and raised a floor, and raised an exterior door. He is priced competitively as well. We have several more projects to do and will hire him again in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have a deadbolt lock installed?

Installing a new deadbolt lock can improve your home security, especially if you think your current lock system has been compromised or there are unaccounted-for copies of your house keys in circulation. A professional locksmith can install a new deadbolt for you in a matter of hours. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Locksmith prices for installing deadbolts may be higher based on whether the professional provides the lock or you have it on hand, how many components the locking system includes, and how long the installation takes. The cost to purchase a lock yourself from a big-box store can range from approximately $70 to $225 or more, depending on quality and materials. Higher-security locks often take longer and therefore cost more to install.

How does a locksmith open a locked door?

Locksmiths use specialized tools and techniques to open your door in the case of lockouts or lost keys. Trained locksmiths can pick your door lock with lock-picking tools such as a rake, a tension wrench, a half diamond or a hook. They may use a technique called bumping, which will work on pin tumbler locks, or as a last resort they may use a drill to remove your existing lock. The national average locksmith price ranges between $70 and $100. A locksmith can also replace your current lock system, re-key your locks if you have lost your keys, repair a broken lock, install a deadlock and more. Locksmiths not only help with front doors, they can help if you are locked out of your car, locked out of your mailbox, locked out of your shed … you name it. There may be an additional charge for emergency after-hours locksmith services. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to make a new key for a car?

Locksmiths’ prices for making new car keys can vary depending on the make of your car as well as the time of day and location. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100, but duplicating a key may cost as little as $30, while extraction a key stuck in the ignition, cutting a new key and programming the fob can cost much more.

You might need a new car key if you have lost your key, the key broke in the ignition, the key is bent or damaged, or you just want a duplicate in case of emergency. You can request a duplicate of a key you have on hand, or you can have a new key made or cut if you have lost your original car keys. If you need to replace lost keys, you’ll need to first provide proof that you are the owner of the car along with the vehicle identification number (VIN). If you’re just locked out of your car but don’t need a key made, a locksmith may charge $65 to get you back in. Locksmith car key services are often far more affordable than dealership prices for new keys.

How much does it cost for a car locksmith?

There are several reasons you may need a car locksmith. You may be locked out of your car (either with the keys inside or with no keys at all), you may have lost your car keys and need a new key, or you may want to make a duplicate car key. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Getting locked out of your car can be scary and overwhelming — especially if it’s cold and dark out. Fortunately, professional locksmiths provide round-the-clock assistance to help people in these circumstances.

Car lockouts are one of the main reasons people need a locksmith. Your locksmith’s price can depend on the type of car you have, the time of day (or night) it is, and where you are located. Locksmith pricing may be based on a flat rate, or pricing may be quoted to you after the locksmith determines the circumstances. For example, a flat rate for a car lockout could be $65 for standard vehicles. That price could be higher for after-hours or long-distance service, or service during extreme weather. If you have entirely lost your car keys, a locksmith can make you a new car key, but first they must verify that you are the owner of the car. Locksmiths can even program new car key fobs for you — often at a lower price than a dealership.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
