Loved working with Lone Star. Mike listened to what we wanted, offered advice and suggestions, was super flexible and accommodating, and reasonably priced. I highly recommend them. -- we had our yard and beds replaced with decorative gravel and some plants removed and/or relocated, some stone edging put in and a small driveway laid.

Jon was very responsive and accommodating to the fence repair that we needed. He reached out quickly after submitting my need for this repair and had great communication with me every step of the way. I would not hesitate to hire him again for fence work and recommend him to anyone that may also need work done.

My repair turned out to be fairly easy but the guys did a great job and also explained the issue with my dishwasher and did not try to repair something that wasn't really broken. I would definitely use them again.

They were on time, kept me informed about what they were doing, what they found, what the cost would be for the repair. I was impressed on all levels. The did exactly what they said they would, and the cost was in line with what they had told me up front... Highly Recommend

They repaired brick over garage door. Great company to work with. Repair was way below contract estimate as less was needed to be done. They were on time and completed the job quickly leaving the job site broom clean. I highly respect the companies ethics. Call them first.

Couldn't ask for better service. Our house was built in 1937 and over the last 4 years we've dealt with A LOT of contractors. Last summer we had the misfortune of hiring an unlicensed concrete specialist to install a driveway. The severe angle of the grade they created at the approach caused cars to bottom out, and even trucks to scrape their undercarriage along the entrance. Dulce handled all the permitting, the communication with the city, and worked directly with a city engineer to ensure that the job was fixed and done correctly -- and at a fair price. Her communication on the job was flawless, delays (due to the city inspection process, no fault of her own) were communicated well in advance. I sincerely wish we had found her earlier.

We hired David at Mi Tierra to cover our filled-in pool with a lueder stone patio as well as doing some retaining wall repair and brick work. He is very honest, informative and always kept in touch and oversaw the work being done to make sure it was what we wanted. Everything went remarkably smoothly, especially considering that our courtyard is enclosed and difficult to access. The crew was professional, friendly and respectful. The results are beautiful- we are very happy with the new patio and are asking Mi Tierra to do another project.

Chris Fischer was a pleasure to work with and I would use his services again in a heartbeat. I had several minor home repairs (oven, disposal, kitchen faucet, microwave) that he thoroughly diagnosed, explained the costs, how long it would take to order parts, and repair them. His rates are very reasonable and his quality & professionalism are second-to-none!

We hired Ryan because he was knowledgeable, friendly, and his quote was significantly less than the others I had received. He did an excellent job on the fence repair, and even took the initiative to replace some boards that we hadn't discussed. We highly recommend Ryan, and we'll definitely hire him again for our future needs.

NS Concrete did an amazing job reconfiguring the slope of my driveway. Nahum is very thorough and responsive. He promptly responded and gave a fair price quote for the job while following through at every stage of the project. He's a talented guy that I would trust with any concrete job. Thanks for the hardwork!

Nick and Zach did our bathroom backsplash, replaced a water damaged bathroom window sill, installed crown moulding in our bath and office, and repaired some damaged attic trusses. They did a great job on everything, especially the crown moulding. In fact I should probably have them come back and re-do all of the crown moulding that I did myself downstairs, since it is not nearly to their level of craftsmanship.

Ray and his crew did an excellent job in extending our driveway. They arrived promptly when they said they should and the outcome was exactly as we wanted. They also cleaned up the area where the with was done. I’m very picky, so the fact that I don’t have any complaints means the job was perfect!

I had 2 large driveway slabs that were tilting and a big void under several more. Austin Smith was very friendly and prompt for both the quote and the job. In addition to answering all my questions, they were reasonably priced, did a great repair and left the site really clean. My neighbor watched them work from across the street and decided she would use them too! I would definitely recommend Concrete Leveling Technologies to anyone.

James came and gave abid on concrete repair. He stayed in touch the whole time. Did a great job on a tricky repair and when the stain I had wanted was mixed incorrectly he took care of it! It wasn't part of the original plan (we bought the stain) but he went with it and took care of the bump in the road with kindness and professionalism. Will hire him again and recommend.

Based on a neighbor’s recommendation we engaged Gonzales Slab & Demo for a couple of small concrete projects. Edward was extremely responsive including calls and texts over the weekend to discuss the details and scheduling of projects. When we learned that Edward was not only proficient in concrete work we solicited his assistance on several other maintenance projects including some gate and brick repair. We are pleased with the results/quality of his work and would not hesitate to recommend Gonzales Slab & Demo to our friends and neighbors.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
  • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
  • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
  • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
  • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
  • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time.
