The coolest shop in Austin, DRUMZ, is a true sanctuary tucked away on Kerbey Lane....a lush garden path leads you up to DRUMZ and as you enter into its cool vibe, it's almost as if you are transported to another place. West Africa is embodied in this shop with every percussion instrument you could ever imagine!! Djembes, djunduns, kalimbas, dumbeks, shekeres, congas, bells and more....all beckoning to you to bring them to life!! And then there's Sherry Gingras, Austin Icon and the owner of DRUMZ who is an amazing and FUN teacher of these drums!! She offers all levels of classes - teaching us to play the djembe and the djunduns ( bass drums played with sticks). Sherry is a master drummer and has studied with the African masters, such as Mamady Keita, and she will inspire you to reach to your edge...She teaches in a most patient way, making sure that everyone in the class understands that "they have rhythm if they have a heartbeat." It is truly amazing to see how a group of beginner drummers can come together as a community thru Sherry and by the end of class, they have created a most incredible African rhythm! So visit DRUMZ and see why drumming has become my PASSION!

Let me establish this point at the very beginning of this review: HAND DRUMMING IS FUN! I have loved music for as long as I can remember, but had no "talent" to be anything but a listener and an enthusiast. I was the proverbial, "can't-carry-a-tune-in-a-bucket" kind of person! Not until Sherry Gingras introduced me to hand drumming, did I move from WATCHING to DOING...and what a wonderful and FUN experience that has been! Hand drumming provides an amazing opportunity for non-musicians, like me, to participate in a realm of self expression and creativity that had been hidden before joining the DRUMZ group. There is something so natural and so basic about creating a drum rhythm. As dramatic as this may sound, the drum beat seems to connect the heart beat to the rhythm of Nature in a very therapeutic way. You feel re-energized after a drum session. Oh, and did I mention how much FUN it is? I haven't met a nicer, and more gentle spirit than Sherry Gingras. Her love for drumming is contagious, and the excitement she generates instills a desire in her students to BE all they can BE. It is S-O-O-O much FUN (did I already say that?). In our busy, fast-paced lives it is so easy to get out of balance and out of rhythm with LIFE. Perspective gets blurred and you end up feeling unfulfilled and out of touch with the things that really matter. Hand drumming is an inexpensive and very effective way to "get a grip" and...and...(you guessed it)...have FUN!!!

Excellent, compassionate teacher. Well-trained and talented instructor of AUTHENTIC African drumming. Her method is encouraging and totally without judgment. Whether you are a beginner, novist, or a professional drummer, Sherry will help you to find and achieve levels you never thought possible. Oh, did I mention that she traveled to Mali for graduate-level training by Mamady Keita ? ... and that she performed a Djembe solo for an entirely West African audience--it was magnificent! Sherry is an accomplished performer of the djembe and djun-djun drums, bout her passion a greatest contribution to the legacy of West African drumming is her unmatched teaching and training skills.

Sherry is an exceptional being with such a wonderful accepting attitude. She is so supportive in all aspects as I have taken lessons, purchased a drum and had various maintenance drum repairs. I highly recommend any interactions with Drumz and Sherry, as we are so very lucky to have this store in our town! I love all the different percussion instruments we are offered to play at the end of each class too.
