Chris and his crew were outstanding. First off, he was the only moving company that actually gave a total bid on the information I entered into the system. . All of the others just gave an hourly rate, he actually quoted a total cost for the approximate hours for our two 10' X 20' storage units. His quote was pretty qccurate to the actual time. We have used other movers in the past and ended up paying almost double the amount quoted, this was not the case here. This was a far better experience than we have had in the past. Even though it rained the whole day we moved, they never complained and worked extremely hard to keep our stuff as dry as possible. They protected all of our furniture and pictures to prevent any damage from occurring during the move. The were very professional and have an A+ attitude. I would use them again and recommend them to anyone who is moving in the future. I even pass his information on to my realtor who didn't have a good mover to recommend. Thanks Chris for the awesome experience. Mark

My arrival estimated time was between 830 and 930 am. The movers arrived and clocked in at 8:31. That was amazing! Have made several college student moves and that has never happened. I was to have 2 men and got 3. They were all very polite and extremely efficient. I WiLL use this company again and will recommend to all my friends. Thank you so much!

Superb service through and through. Called last minute to move the day after Christmas. No problem. Discussed 2 or 3 movers, no pressure to get 3 but chose that to accelerate moving. All three professional, courteous and expert movers. Large move but no dents, breaks nor scratches. Some of the best service I have received and recommend them without question. Cost was very reasonable as well. Thanks N&D!

These two were so great! Prompt, easy to communicate with, and just overall pleasant to be around ! I highly recommend. It was less for me to expensive to use them, even after tip, than to rent a moving truck to move a couch. They made the whole process so easy, and it was the cherry on top to have movers who were so kind to both me and each other.

This was the best moving experience service I have ever had. I had a terrible experience with a bigger moving company, I won't mention their name, Moo, so I was hesitant to work with any other moving companies. However, I was blessed to have found Mario and Sara. They are hardworking, professional, genuine, and have incredible prices. You don't need to look at the huge commercial movers. If you want it done well Ashford Home Services is the one to hire. They also do packing, unpacking, etc. I am also hiring them to haul some things away. I absolutely recommend this company to everyone!

Todd and Josh were outstanding in helping me solve a problem moving a couch upstairs. Previous movers had been unable to accomplish this. My staircase is small and the second floor ceiling is low. Todd and Josh were able to hoist the couch over the second floor balcony, then maneuver it past a challenging set of doors to the location I wanted it. This involved temporarily removing two heavy wood doors. I recommend them both.

This was my first time using movers and I will DEFINITELY use Right Choice Moving in the future. Caleb was very responsive and confirmed my appointment within 24 hours of the initial estimate. His team showed up ready to work, listened to directions well, and always made sure they were doing exactly what we needed. We moved the majority of a one bedroom apartment from a ground floor to a second floor in two hours. No pieces were damaged, they tied everything down securely, and even helped arrange furniture in the new place. I cannot say enough good things about Caleb and his team, Christian and Kyle! Rockstars! Wish I could give more than 5 stars!

Outstanding job. Professional workers, punctual, careful with the furniture. When moving in even suggested layouts in the new property and helped place everything. Also helped me dispose of some bulky items. I moved many times while in the military, and often had the grab-and-dump type movers, or the big companies who damage your stuff in the warehouse rather than during the move. These guys definitely are neither. I highly recommend!

The Movers (4 guys) were good, professional, and helpful, and did not waste time. I had specifically talked with Kyle about my Spinet Piano, reminded him, and was assured that they would have the right equipment. However, when the movers appeared, they THOUGHT they might have the proper dolly (none). At settlement time (paying), I asked Kyle about this, and he then said something like, well for this size move, it would not be feasible to provide the dolly. (Take that as meaning something to do with cost) A good move, but leadership/ownership lacking a bit of credibilty.

I contacted extra mile movers with a very short notice and they were amazing!!! They were extremely nice, respectful of me and my property. Two guys came out in a huge moving truck and all their moving equipment, they were incredibly fast and efficient. We could not have been happier with their service. They did a superb job and they truly went the extra mile! I would definitely recommend Extra Mile Movers. Thank you for a job extremely well done!

Frank has helped me out multiple times picking up furniture, appliances, and building supplies. He is easy to get a hold of, shows up on time, is friendly, and is careful with whatever he's moving. I really appreciate that he's prepared with the right equipment to protect the items being transported and takes the time to do it right. I will continue to count on Frank when I need to pick up large items around town.

My movers just left and requested a review as quickly as possible. I assured them that I would provide then with a 10 out of 5 star rating. Most importantly, the young men were respectful to my husband and I. I am 67 years old so I was on the young men from start to finish - making sure they were respectful of my belongings and home. They wrapped all of my furniture and assisting with packing items that were not packed upon their arrival. I did notice a small hole in the wall at the pick up address. Tight corners so I did not complain. But I did want them to know that I noticed. Other than that, my belongings arrived in great shape. I will recommend to my friend Margaret who will be moving in about 2 weeks. I informed her to request Mark and Stephen. Thanks again for your hard work. Spend your tip wisely.

I had furniture delivered, but t, they would not move the old furniture upstairs. I called Isaac Galloway at Freedom Movers around 4:00 p.m. to see if they could do the job. He called his men and they readily agreed. They were in Houston and I am I. Baytown. They started my job at 6:48 p.m. and finished before 8:00. I had furniture moved from downstairs (heavy leather) to upstairs, and then furniture from upstairs to downstairs (again, heavy furniture). The service that we received was very professional, and they did a great job. They were very hard workers, and did not stop until the work was done. They also took extra care in not damaging the furniture. Would definitely use them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
