I hired Mr. Larrimore to replace a kitchen faucet which he completed. However, it was reported to me by the renter that there was a leak under the sink as well. Because he is a Journeyman Plumber, he agreed to remedy the problem. Mr. Larrimore contacted me to inquire re: water shut-off procedure for the individual unit versus the entire condo neighborhood before proceeding with the repair. He replaced old system connections to a safer setup. He was responsive to my initial Thumbtack requests and was flexible with his schedule to accomodate the renter. I will contact him again.

Quality: The finish they did was great! Matched other rooms very well. Getting a good texture match was important to me. Professionalism: Team was polite and courteous. Responsiveness: Joel always responded via Thumbtack quickly. I always knew the status of the work and when he thought they would be finished. Value: His bid was not the cheapest nor the most expensive. I find you get what you pay for -- and for the quality of work, what he bid was very reasonable. Punctuality: In general, very punctual. Our first day the team was a little late (got hung up at the supply store), but they hustled over as fast as they could. Otherwise, they finished when I expected they would. Other remarks: Popcorn removal is a messy process -- this case was no exception. While they did an admirable job covering the floors, and trying to minimize the impact, dust still got everywhere - even in parts of the house where they weren't working. There was also texture splatter here and there, but they cleaned it up without complaint. Expect that this process will require you paint your walls in the rooms where it is done. The ceiling will look so much nicer it will make your walls look awful. If you plan to paint your walls, wait and do popcorn removal first. :D They also were game to take on a little extra item here and there (we negotiated $$ as we went). Saved me from having to hire separate contractors later -- so that was a bonus. Having worked with a lot of sub-contractors and home improvement projects, the work was done very well. The dust / mess I can clean-up (and frankly, it was expected). Solid A overall.

I needed someone to paint the exterior of our 1940 house. I wanted a contractor willing to remove as much of the old, peeling paint as possible, and the big painting outfits are just not interested in doing this amount of prep work. I got five bids, and Fina Ross of ROSS Painting Contracting stood out to me from the start. As we walked around my house the first time, I noticed immediately her extreme attention to detail. She expressed concern about the various ways our house wasn't sealed against water and educated me on how she suggested correcting this prior to painting. Although I was also very interested in one other contractor, I chose Fina because she said she "really wants to give people what they want." I believed her, and she delivered on this promise. Fina worked hard to organize crews to powerwash, scrape, and sand the original wood siding. She made sure her guys filled every nook and cranny before painting. I also had Fina replace the trim around the windows. When the old trim was removed, Fina discovered that there was no insulation around any of the windows. She paused in the work to purchase what she needed to insulate the windows before replacing the trim. Once Fina addressed this unexpected need, it made a huge difference in reducing the street noise coming into our house. Throughout the project, we ran into unexpected bumps, and Fina did an excellent job of proposing the most cost-effective solutions that would also retain or add value to our home. I will not hesitate to hire Fina again for other home projects.

Marco and his guys do great work. I hired them to build a fence & refurbish an entire deck. The work was done on budget & on time. Since that first job, I've had them back for a plumbing issue that required sheet rock replacement. Their most recent project for us was a complete redesign and landscaping of our entire back yard. We are very pleased with the results. Marco & his crew are great!

After this experience, I wouldn’t hire anyone else! Geronimo was a true professional, payed attention to detail, thorough, and even made sure his subcontractors did work that was up to his company’s high standards. He even took on the job of painting our house when his guy didn’t show up. Talk about service!! Also, he is very easy to work with and knows how to communicate to understand what the customer needs. All the work was done in a FLASH!! If you need A+ roofing or general contractor help in Austin/Round Rock, look no further!

Felipe Garcia and team member, Scotty, were absolutely amazing. They showed up on time, and were as professional, efficient, and courteous as any home professional repair company I have ever worked with. Felipe's pricing beat five other estimates substantially. They remained on site to make certain everything worked properly that primarily included replacement of a hot water heater. If you are looking for solid workmanship, no 'upselling techniques', honesty -- all at an extremely fair price, then look no further than Felipe Garcia. Oh, all of the above with same day service -- within two hours of my first outreach on Thumbtack.

I had spoken with many professionals on Thumbtack before I met Hunt Specialties..many were no shows or just simply did not want a challenge ....Then comes Hunt Specialties! Worked with Caleb and his team and they were superior to any other full service construction offerings....they were ahead of schedule, professional, precise and upbeat and positive which was very refreshing... This is who you call for a "can-do" attitude for anything from flooring, assembly of furniture, awnings, electric, large projects and small to work-arounds. Particularly if you have an older home and everything is not aligned exactly to measurement....No big deal for these professionals. They will take any issue and provide a solution...with a great attitude....it doesn't get better than this! Call Hunt Specialties first....you will be glad you did!

Working with Mr. Derwood Kirby (Derbys) on the completion of my fence projects was a distinct pleasure. I had over 150 linear feet of fence replaced at my residence (two 60 foot, 6' high, privacy fences, a 20 foot connecting fence and an additional 10 foot connecter on the street side with a custom gate), Mr. Kirby was very easy to work with and completed the projects at a very fair price and in a very thorough and professional manner. He was very polite and courteous throughout the 4 day project, despite working in some of early February's sub-freezing weather. Since the work was completed, I have received several spontaneous and unsolicited favorable comments by passers-by and neighbors. I would be very happy to work with Mr. Kirby again on any future projects should he be available. Thank you, Thumbtack.Com, also, for helping me find him!

I normally don't leave reviews but for this service I have to. Mike and Mike both were very helpful with my mold situation. My kids bathroom had mold spots all on the ceiling. Instead of Restoration 1 giving me some standard mold removal estimate, they came to the house to actually diagnose my problem free of charge. They gave me the honest truth about my situation (it wasn't as bad as I thought) and gave me the do it yourself low cost remedy. I know a lot of professionals would not care to share that information and lose out on money. But for Restoration 1 to not be in the business off just taking peoples money they have earned my business for life. Go to Restoration 1 of Round Rock for your mold removal or restoration service!! I had hired Chris for my basement remodel. I'm located in Portland but I was told, Chris was here visiting family and had some extra time to complete a project while he was here. I've never used Thumbtack before but the quotes I was getting from local companies were just way too high to consider. Chris responded on the first day and helped walk me through the extensive amount of work needed that I was completely unaware of. His knowledge of the project and what was needed, seemed like he had experience and was able to walk me through it in a way I could understand. He was able to offer much better pricing than others because I had a very lean budget to work with. Chris did his very best to work with me even though I must have been a nightmare to work with, but Chris's was a champ. He built interior walls on a sloping floor, created a beautiful reclaimed wood wall and used the left over to build out a cedar closet for guest use. The bulk of the project was soundproofing my ceiling wit Rozul insulation and over 500 square feet of ceiling drywall and texture. It was a 2-week project from start to finish, a little longer than I had hoped, but I was happy with Chris because he was doing it all himself. I just wish he lived in Portland. I would hire him all the time. Super Impressive!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
