Kevin installed a kitchen sink, kitchen faucet, disposer, three toilets, a whole house water filter and a water softener in our condo. All the work was flawless. He puts pride on his work and explains the job details. I am very pleased with the work he did for the water softener water line and drain since he made sure everything was set up for maximum efficiency. I will hire Kevin for all future plumbing jobs in my house. He is honest, reasonable and great to work with.

Manuel and his guys were so amazing. They built a closet for our washer dryer in half a day, had it textured and painted the very next morning and gave me a price I couldn’t beat. Not to mention, took care of a few miscellaneous items that needed to be done that were not included in the initial work request. He also saw where we could benefit from some more work and offered an incredibly creative solution that was needed for the lighting in the kitchen. He is an unbelievably professional, honest, and communicative businessman and I HIGHLY recommend hiring him for all your general construction needs!!

Whole house interior painting including popcorn ceiling removal as well as painting kitchen cabinets. Good and efficient crew with reasonable pricing. Ms. Ross, the owner has design background and excellent advice on what works well in color selections. Very good attention to detail. In addition to painting, she produced a very competitive bid for tiling ~740 sq feet 12x24 of floor tiles. The tiling crew she provided installed the tile first with good preparation then installed tiles with very fine grout lines as requested. Overall, very impressed and would hire again for future work.

We hired Henson Home Solutions, LLC to do an extensive remodel of our home including new windows and trim, painting the entire interior, changing square room openings to beautiful archways, replacing all interior doors, adding ceiling lights to our dark living room and kitchen, installing beautiful barn doors between two bedrooms, and a total redo of our small outdated bathroom to make it look exactly like a picture I had fallen in love with. That included a beautiful tiled walk in shower that we just love. Henson Home Solutions is a great company to work with and we couldn't be happier with their work or give them a higher recommendation.

Chris has done a lot of work on our house and was always very professional and knowledgeable. He has helped us with cosmetic things like placing a trim around our mirrors to make them look nicer, to building a wooden headboard for my son, to fixing kitchen plumbing problems and building us a wonderful outdoor patio area! I will continue to use Mr. Spene whenever we need him.

Alex has been absolutely amazing. We had him do a bunch of work to our home before we moved in, anything he didn't have personal experience in, he had someone else that could do the work. He brought in a team of guys that came and ripped out 600sq ft of carpet and installed our beautiful new hardwood floors. We requested a new pendent light in the kitchen as well as some new recessed can lights, all of which are aligned perfectly and are exactly where requested. To top it all off, we had out two largest rooms painted, living room and kitchen, and they look phenomenal! The house is completely transformed, and he was able to get it done about 2 weekends. Now it's all move in ready. We'll definitely be having Alex back again for our future work (fencing, bathroom remodels, and running Cat6 network drops). He's a very personable individual, and is extremely meticulous when it comes to the detail work. I'm extremely satisfied with the work that was completed! -Steve

Kelly Cobb is a great handyman / painter / remodel person. I hired him for a small job and kept him on to basically remodel the house and another investment property. Some jobs he did were: removal of popcorn ceiling, re texturing walls and paint after electrical work cut holes in drywall, bathroom tile - floor and tub, installing bathroom vanity, landscaping, kitchen remodel, exterior & interior paint on outside house etc. I would definitely recommend Kelly as he is a hard worker and can complete just about anything. I attached some pictures of just the kitchen remodel. I described some crazy things I wanted done such as the live edge bar and his idea for the stainless steel back splash, which he had the contacts for the custom slab (he sanded it, sealed and treated slab) and steel work. He also has other contacts if needed. Trustworthy, nice, fair prices and conscientious! If I ever need additional work or do a flip I am excited I know a contractor. When the job got really big I did use his recommended helpers. He also got along with the neighbors and some subsequently hired him after my job. Thanks Kelly!

Donny, and the rest of the guys over at River City Tile and Remodel are great! They will work with you through every step from design until completion. They also usually finish most projects a little early because of their hard working mentality. if you need cabinets, kitchens or your bathroom re-done I highly recommend them.

Nolan did an excellent job of building a custom frame from square steel tubing to support a new granite countertop for our outdoor kitchen. The top required additional support and a slight rise in elevation in order to work for the granite slabs. Nolan was very professional and did the work quickly and within a very reasonable budget. His measurements of what we needed resulted in an excellent fit for the countertop. His metal working skills are very good!

We were in need of a double oven and range top to replace a standard free standing oven. Problem: our pantry closet was the only space available which meant we either gave up the pantry or keep what we had. Bert was able to redesign that portion of the kitchen resulting in a range top, two ovens, pantry doors with pull out shelves expanding our storage and giving the kitchen a more functional arrangement. The project was completed pretty much as projected and within budget. Bert is a hands on get it right contractor--would recommend him highly.

We did a full kitchen remodel and Alex at Premium Cabinets helped us design our project and they provided all our cabinetry. They really help make our vision come to life. We added alot of extras like crown molding , roll out trays and a really nice trash unit that pulls out from one of the cabinets. The price was good, but the value was very high for the money we spent.

Victoria helped me with color choices (there is not just one 'white'), moving and placing art, moving and removing furniture for better flow and usability, and she really helped me figure out how I wanted the rooms to FEEL. Oh yes, ORGANIZATION!! She helped maximize and better utilize my kitchen spaces, pantry and drawers and we created a coffe/tea bar that is now a welcoming useable area.

I selected them for a bathroom remodel and expanded this to include master closet and bedroom. I was so satisfied that I brought them back again to add an extra room, patio cover, and outdoor kitchen. Completing that job compelled us to keep going; massive complete remodel of kitchen, dining, living room. We did all work in segments over a three year span by our choice so we could live around the projects. Bottom line, we were highly satisfied as evident by bringing them back for project after project and trusting them with our house.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
