Carlton came out to my house and was able to maneuver around my junky tool table to fix my water heater. He re-lit the pilot but my ignitor was faulty and after it cycled and he left, the water heater went out. Carlton had already ordered the part I needed and came back a week later after the part was shipped and installed the part. He was upfront with his cost and time.

Ricky was fantastic. We called Dayton out to do a water heater flush, but Ricky ended up installing a water softener for us as well. Our water is extremely hard (which I knew), but I didn't know how bad it was...and our house is less than 2 years old. Ricky will be coming back out to do some additional plumbing/installation work for us next week. Very knowledgeable & professional.

The owner worked quickly to replace my hot water heater in the attic. He identified a faulty valve in my guest bath and insisted on fixing it (only charging for parts) prior to completing the water heater installation. I would recommend SEA and plan to use them again when needed.

Connley replaced our leaking water heater. He was very friendly, helpful and honest. He was flexible when we decided to purchase the water heater ourselves and have him install it. His price was fair, much better than the quote we received from Home Depot. We would give him four and A half stars if we could. We highly recommend Connley for water heater repair or replacement.

Cost estimate was significantly less than a well known plumbing company in the greater Austin area (e.g $1400) while still replacing the same parts and meeting code standards. Garrett was timely, communicative, efficient, and followed up several days later to ensure the water heater was working properly. Already recommended to our neighbor and will recommend to others.

He answered the phone quickly and was the first to respond. His price was really low since than all others. All I had to do was buy all the supplies at The Home Depot from a list that Jose provided. He installed a water heater according to inspection code. Great guy.

I talked to Russ a while ago to get a quote for my water heater replacement. I finally got around to it and called him. He was able to accommodate us that very day. Russ did a good job with the installation and was very helpful in giving us instructions of how to maintain it going forward. He was very courteous and professional throughout the process. I would highly recommend him to anyone for their future plumbing needs. He was also very reasonable with his quote. Very happy with the service!

Chad responded quickly with a highly competitive offer. He was able to fit us into his schedule the next day. In addition to fixing our problem, he also did a review of our other sinks, water softener and two hot water heaters. He called with an overview of his findings, but was not pushy about repair work. His professionalism was exemplary and we will be using him again for our plumbing needs! Thanks, Chad! And thanks Thumtack!!

Ben was on time, courteous and professional. He showed me photos of where the water heater failed. The heater was in the attic. He gave a quote to replace it. And did the job plus he insulated some hot water lines in the attic that should have been insulated. The next day he called to make sure everything was working correctly. I highly recommend him.

My water heater broke so I didn't have hot water for 2 weeks. After shopping around in Austin, I found Rigo on Thumbtack. Rigo was so quick to get back to me on setting up an appointment. He picked up the replacement part and replaced the water valve in one hour. He even came back an hour later to check to make sure everything was working. I highly recommend Rigo for any water heater repairs and would use him again!

I highly recommend Radiant Plumbing. We needed a tankless water-heater replaced, and Gary, the plumber whom we worked with, did an outstanding job. Initially, he came to the house to assess the situation. He gave us a thorough and knowledgable recommendation about our needs, and he clearly answered all our questions. I was able to schedule the work to be done soon after. Gary installed the water-heater in a timely, professional and courteous manner. We have hot water! Hurrah! Thanks to Gary and the folks at Radiant.

I had an old on demand hot water heater go out and I contacted Danny from an ad on Craig's list. You can never tell what kind of person you will find on Craig's list BUT this time it was very good! Danny replaced the unit and even added an electrical outlet, since the new unit required it, which not something most plumbers would do. The cost was very reasonable. If you have any plumbing repair needs, I would start with A Model Plumbing!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

    • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
    • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
    • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
