If I could give 6 stars I would. Working with Leslie was so easy! Usually the breakfast/lunch part of our events is the most time consuming and stressful, but for the first time, I wasn't freaking out. She was incredibly prompt with quotes, answered all my questions (no matter how stupid), and thought of everything before I even asked. I'm always nervous about catering since I've had some horror stories with incredibly late caterers. Not them! They arrived an hour early, prepped, and we had an excellent breakfast. My office is notorious for being incredibly picky when it comes to food, and all I heard around the event was how amazing the food was and how friendly and fantastic the chefs were. This was a first for us! I'm afraid they're going to see a lot of us in the future, and I can honestly say that one of the reasons my event went so smoothly is due to Fabulous Affairs.

Planning our event in 2 weeks, I was afraid I wouldn't have a good choice of caterers. Laura was prompt and helpful in getting everything to me. Her staff was super friendly and kind. People raved about the food, which was delicious and presented beautifully. They left our house clean as it was and we even lucked out with a few leftovers. I would recommend Laura to my friends.

Katie just catered a meal for 22 girls for a Bachelorette Party at the house we rented over the weekend. From the very beginning, Katie was extremely helpful, responsive and gave us many different menus and options to choose from. She had great communication and not the mention her food is amazing! Everything tasted fantastic and all the girls raved about the food even days later. Katie was extremely professional, dinner was served exactly on time and they cleaned up everything so nicely. If I lived in Austin I would definitely use her as much as I could for any future private catering events. Thanks so much for helping create a wonderful night for us!

Bon is my go-to caterer, period. She has catered an annual party for 60+ people for the last 3 years. She also did a more intimate gathering for a sit-down dinner for 20. I have also sampled her personal chef work through a friend. Regardless of the size of the event, Bon creates delicious, beautiful food, and she and her team are the height of professionalism. To top it all off, they do an amazing clean-up job! Working with Bon is easy and so enjoyable. You will be thrilled with her work!

I can't say enough about how great Diva B's Kitchen is!!! I have used Diva B's Kitchen for several events with my sorority and she always delivers high quality food that is delicious and satisfying. Balena is always willing to work within whatever budget I have to offer a variety of items to appease my guests and cater to all diets. She quickly responds to messages/texts/calls and was so patient, especially when dealing with changes to the menu. Diva B's Kitchen is my go-to caterer and she should be yours too!!

Tricia did a great job communicating with me to plan a party menu that met our needs. She arrived on time with everything promised and all attendees really enjoyed the quality and variety of hors d'oeuvres. Reliability, affordability and good food - what more can you ask from a caterer? Thanks!

Troy catered our wedding with brisket, ribs, chicken, and sides. People come up to me a year and a half later asking who did the catering and complimenting the quality. My memory of that day is a blur, but the juiciness and flavor of that meal is clear. We could not have asked for better service, better food, or a better price.

I chose Eric as "My Personal Chef" first because he was the first person to respond to my request. Then after speaking with Eric about what I was looking for and what I am trying to accomplish I knew I had made the right choice. Just to share what I was looking for was someone to cook for me because I work 10 hour shifts and get home at midnight. I also want to lose weight. I was spending money on food to prepare with the best of intentions and wouldn't. I have wasted more food then I care to admit. I was spending a fortune on fast food, including take out here and there. Eric was great from the time we first talked on the phone to the texts that followed. He has really personalized my meals, including snacks. Just taking away thinking about when to shop, what to make, when to make it has been priceless for me. The food tastes is wonderful and almost too beautiful to eat! :-) I can't wait until next week!

Paola helped the Office of Sustainability with the creation of the Austin Green Business Leaders program, a new City of Austin program to help Austin businesses “go green.” She actively participated in stakeholder meetings and conference call and gave valuable feedback. She even hosted our press release where the Chief Sustainability Office and the Mayor spoke. She is a great resource for green restaurant practices and well as an inspiration for other restaurant. We really appreciated her expanding her composting program and using an abandon lot to create an herb garden. She truly gives back to her community and costumers. It’s hard to say how she could have improved her performance when she went above and beyond to help us and the program. She even volunteered to shoot a video which is on our website.

Jesus makes some mean BBQ! He caters for us at work frequently, so I knew it was delicious, and we chose his service for our wedding! We could not have been more pleased with the variety of choices for our menu, the cost per person can't be beat, and most importantly everything he makes is so juicy and perfect! You can't go wrong here.

The best custom catered culinary experience you can find in Austin hands down. This is from someone who works weddings every week and has tried almost every caterer in the Central Texas area. A unique and non-traditional experience for Texans looking for great alternate catering options.

Cameron and the Gusto catering team are true catering professionals. Beyond the rave reviews on the food from our guests, the service was impeccable. I recommend Gusto for your next event, large or small.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

    • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
    • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
    • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
    • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
    • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
