Jeff and his crew are true professionals. On time and very professional. They did an amazing job with our tree removal job. While not the least expensive estimate we received, we are definitely happy we paid more to have the right company do the job. Jeff’s knowledge about the jobs is unparalleled, and he knew portions of the job that were important, but the other companies never even mentioned. His crew was polite, they left our yard clean, and they were hard workers. Jeff is a good guy, and it truly does show through in the job he does. I definitely recommend Leaf Professional, and will use them again if I ever have need to.

We hired Jon to replace our wooden 9 year old crumbling fence that had partially blown down from a storm. We got lots of quotes from big fencing companies and no one could come close to the price that Jon offered us. Jon's quote was about $10 cheaper per linear foot than the other companies could offer! Jon and his crew did a beautiful job on the fence. They even had to deal with connecting the fence to a large tree and they did it seamlessly. I am so happy that we had Jon and his crew come out to do our fence. They were able to finish the project in just three days and I hardly knew they were even there. The best part is, that rather than just take the old wood to the dump, they offered it to a few couples who needed the wood repair their fences/make crafts which is super environmentally friendly! I will definitely hire them in the future to do other projects around our house.

The young gentlemen were very friendly and worked hard to get the job done. I enjoyed being around them and helping them. They were neat and very professional. The only thing is that I thought they were a little pricey but I have never dealt with junk removal people before. They DID do a very good job!

Manny did a fantastic job for our sod installation and helping with a bit of landscape design. Our front yard was a mess - had to be leveled, weeds removed, a dead tree removed. He went in and laid sod, weed barrier, and new stone xeriscaping. His prices were the best we found. We hired him again to lay sod in our side yard and plant a crepe myrtle in our front. He was very quick and reliable. We would recommend him!

Came on time and didn’t leave till the job was done. He did the best leaf removal so far. Loved his service and will hire him for all my future yard work.

David was hired to operate a Bobcat for clearing silt from my dry creek bed. He accomplished the work in half the time compared to another bidder. The work included the lifting, movement, then repositioning of a foot bridge. Very pleased with the end result. Because of the results, David continued the next day downing dead trees, clearing cedar trees and saplings, moving to a central location for chipping the following day. Operation of the Bobcat grappler made this job much more efficient. Final result was large pile of salvaged cedar posts and cedar mulch. Good results, pleasant to work with, cost effective.

Jose has been thorough with his work and gave me a really good deal on a bundle of services. My trees are gorgeous, no longer threatening my house or driveway, and their clean up was on point. That said, I did need to be somewhat flexible with timing/schedule due to some circumstances that came up, but all around things were handled professionally and I am pleased with the work done. Will use again.

Super work on a very quick turnaround, and the price for the work was phenomenal. The guys did the job in two phases, and they were fast and thorough, and came back the second time to make sure the work of our tree removal and stump grinding was done brilliantly. WILL work with again! (We have more stumps in the back!)

Earl's Tree Service was hired to trim two trees. They called before they arrived and began working on time. They were efficient but careful to remove only what was necessary and requested. They made sure the job performed was satisfactory and then hauled all trimmings and debris away. The quote for a job this large was very reasonable and will contact Earl's Tree Service for an future tree trimming needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
