Amy and John were able to give us excellent advice on the very first meeting. In less than a week we have already seen improvement in our dog's behavior with using the tools and suggestions they provided.

Lee was awesome!!! She was on time for the appoinment, couteous, friendly, well spoken, and really understood the dynamics between my 3 dogs. She taught me several techniques that I could use to treat some of my canines more unfavorable habits. All in all she was a well rounded trainer with a profound knowledge of animal behaviors. I would highly reccomendation her.

It is my pleasure to write a review for Nick as well as, give him the highest recommendation as a trainer. Nick has worked with my two German Shepherds for almost a year now. Nick is not only a very competent trainer, he is professional, empathetic and shows how much he cares for your pups overall needs and your needs as an owner. Working with Nick over the past year results in your confidence as an owner, as well as, your dog's confidence. I brought a 12 week old pup and a 4 year old GS to him and the results were two amazing dogs. Not only does your dog get trained, you get trained to be in control of your dog's behavior. My dogs get so excited every time they see NIck...they have definitely bonded with him and trust him. I can't say enough about Nick as a person, trainer and friend. I would never hesitate to give a recommendation in his training abilities. The biggest compliment I can give, is his training abilities are priceless.

Michael is the dog whisperer! I rescued Julie from the Houston SPCA on July 22nd after getting her home we quickly looked at each other like what have we gotten ourselves into? This pound puppy is cra cra! She was an owner surrender then adopted and quickly returned to the shelter because “she was to hyper” my husband and I made a promise to Julie that she was a good girl deep inside and we wouldn’t give up until we helped her find that good dog behavior we both just knew she had it in her! We took her to the vet and put her on m do for her sever anxiety issue that helped she calmed down but she was still clueless to any basic commands. I decided to look for a trainer to work with Julie for the behavior and anxiety issues we were seeing. I found Stealth K9 and contacted him asking about the cost for board and train. His quote was hundreds cheaper than the rest and his reviews were great he was very responsive I hired him right away! He came and picked Julie up the same day Within 4 hours of reaching out for help. When he arrived Julie did not like him at all because she didn’t know him, she actually bit him out of fear within minutes of him meeting her, that didn’t phase him at all! He was persistent with her and before he even left the house with Julie he had her healing next to him on the leash! He was there for less than 30 min. My husband was blown away. I get daily updates on Julie but after only 3 days of training he sent me a video of Julie’s progress I was in shock completely blown away. Julie loved him she was 100% fixated on him! She was already doing sit stay, heal sit and she was doing it with major noise distractions. He was using positive reinforcement by pet and praise no treats I love this style! I want my dog to perform her commands all the time not only for food. Michael and his team of trainers work day and night training the dogs. Julie has had multiple different trainers all day long so she is taught to take the commands from everyone not just 1 person she has shown no further aggression not even with new trainers she hasn’t worked with yet or doesn’t know. There aren’t enough words to express how great everyone has been with my Julie girl! I am so grateful that I found Michael and he is making it possible for me to fulfill our promise to Julie that we will never give up on her or take her back to the shelter we promised to get her the help she needs and we absolutely have.

Our Brittany (Posey) is a year and six months - she is high energy, very excitable, loving and stubborn dog. Her main issues were that she jumped when meeting new people, dragged us on walks (even with a pinch collar), had little to no recall, and we wouldn't even think about letting her off leash. Posey spent two weeks with Mike and his family in Cleveland (about an hr from downtown Houston). When we went out to pick Posey up after two weeks, we spent about 2 hours going through all the new commands Mike had taught her. We learned how and why to make corrections with a pinch collar and shock collar. After two weeks Mike had sit, down, climb, and here perfected in Posey. Two months after the training with Mike, Posey is maintaining what she learned. She walks with slack in the leash, can walk off leash (with shock collar), and the climb command is very handy. We point to any object: chair, bench, etc... and Posey will climb and stay. Her recall to "here" is great. Posey is much more attentive. Whenever we have any new issues or forget how to properly correct a behavior Mike has been willing to FaceTime and give us a quick lesson. Highly recommend sending your dog to Mike.

From my point of view, Carmen is always dependable and trustworthy, and my animals love her too. I have learned over the years that animals, cats and dogs, are very good judges of human character. They can sniff out the good from the bad, and let me know it. My current two standard poodles are friendly to strangers (at least AFTER I have invited said stranger inside the house in a friendly tone). But they are not going to be unabashedly in love (you know what I mean, when they just won't stop mugging for hugs and rubs in between trying to get in lots of slobbery kisses) with a person that has not treated them well. Same with my social cat - she knows who likes her and has been good to her. While I already knew I had placed my pets in good hands with Carmen and her partner backup, with full confidence that she would take very good care of my animals in accordance with my instructions and their needs, as well as having full access to my home, it was good to get the dogs' and cats' "paws up" review too. 'Cause in the end, that is the review that matters the most to me. And Carmen, sorry but you will just have to steel yourself for my poodles' mugging you the next time you are here.

Annie is great: loves our animals, gives them love plus the training/feedback that they need, and always leaves notes for us on what has been accomplished! Whether just a day walk, or a three-day weekend, she is responsible, communicative, and reliable. Big plus: she is great with older animals, and we have an aging pack...

I believe we are some of Mary's first clients for Pet sitting. We have used her services for 3 years and have already booked into 2016. Mary does a great job! She treats our 3 cats as if they were her own. They usually hide when visitors come, but to them Mary is family and they are happy to see her. I know my pets are well taken care of while I'm away. Mary leaves detailed notes about her visits which is always fun to read when we get back. Mary also cleans or changes litter the boxes, feeds and waters our pets and takes time to play with our pets. Other things Mary does for us, sweeps up stray kitty litter, takes trash to street on trash day. Picks up mail from mail box. Mary is trustworthy and loyal, I have no worries, in fact.. we gave Mary a key to the house and she still has it! Since we use Mary's services several times a year it was easier to have her keep a key. You can't go wrong with Mary! She will treat your pets like family and your home will be looked after too!

Rebecca has come to my home many times to take care of my black lab. She is punctual, respectful, friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and fantastic with my senior dog who has cancer. I trust Rebecca to properly give all required meds plus a lot of extra hugs and kisses. She even volunteered to walk my baby without me asking her to -- she goes the extra mile because she loves the animals. And I love the photos she sends (again, on her own initiative). I just can't say enough good things about Rebecca and how great she is with both animals and people!

As soon as I met Kirk it was obvious that he truly has a special understanding of dog behavior. My dog is normally very nervous, anxious and reactive with strangers, but Kirk was calm and confident in his first interactions with my dog, Sophie and was able to gain control of the situation instantaneously. Over the course of the next 90 minutes, Kirk was very personable and patient with both Sophie and me. His experience and knowledge of dog behavior is apparent and he does a great job of addressing problem situations by empowering you with the knowledge, the tools and most importantly, the confidence to do it on your own. It has only been a few days from our initial session but I am very pleased with the results thus far. I am much more confident in my ability to manage Sophie’s less than ideal behaviors (barking at the door, reacting on leash at other dogs, etc.) This in turn has had a noticeably positive effect on her behavior and energy. I look forward to continue working with Kirk and continuing our progress. I absolutely recommend Kirk if you’re looking for insight into dog behavior and are seeking assistance with your own pup.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
