After having our home on and off the market for nearly 45 days, I decided it was time to hire a stager (the home was vacant). After talking with several staging companies, I chose DeZign Zoo (Christine Brown). Christine was extremely responsive and professional. It was also obvious that she really knows the real estate market. In addition, her quote was actually lower than others with much less experience. We were almost ready to put the home back on the market after doing some painting and Christine was able to fit us into her schedule quickly so we could get back on without delay. She and her assistant came on a Sunday morning and within hours transformed our vacant home into a beautiful space. Her use of colors and accessories was wonderful. And the best part? We had an offer at $10,000 above our asking price in less than 48 hours! I truly believe that you can't go wrong with DeZign Zoo. You can see her work in our listing (for now!) here: https://www.redfin.com/TX/Carrollton/1603-Ginger-Dr-75007/home/33017970

we asked aisha to furnish an apartment completely for us in Plano, Tx while still living in New Mexico. we gave her about a month to have it fully ready for us to move into upon our arrival in Tx. She not only had it ready, within budget, beautifully decorated, but met us at the door. She did an excellent job selecting furniture of quality, still within budget. She also "read my mind" well enough to select items we enjoy, and expect to use for many years to come. Her decorating skills are outstanding. This is one example in our lives when nothing went wrong, and I know of nothing she could have done better.

Dan is a swell guy. Interesting person to chat about and I enjoyed his thoughts on the projects I was doing to my home. I actually changed a plan of mine that I never had thought about (the placement of a door I'm building) and....well, that brought a lot of value to the work he did. Fun guy and I suggest picking his brain...he'll give honest feedback. Cheers

Lisa and her team are very professional to work with, organized and on top of every detail! She tackled a mutli-room remodel at my home, Lisa's design solutions are stunning, I am extremely satisfied. I could not have done this project on my own, my husband was so impressed he asked her to handle his office remodel project.

I heard about Derek after attending a function at a friend's newly constructed home. While the home itself wasn't my style, much more traditional that I prefer, there was something about the feel that I loved. I had Derek bid on our project and decided to hire him for our 100-year factory conversion. I made the best choice possible. Our house is exactly what we wanted but had a hard time expressing. Modern, Industrial and somehow warm and inviting all at the same time. Derek's professionalism, attention to detail, and design aesthetic really place him above the rest. I've seen some of his other work and while totally diverse in style he captures a quality that really makes it feel like home. Our home actually feels and looks like we designed it ourselves... if we actually had style and impeccable taste! If you want the job done right, you will be enthralled with what Derek can and does create. Worth every penny we spent.

I was looking to decorate an office space for my business, and I had absolutely no idea where to start. After my first consultation I knew I had made the right call. Using gre area designs was probably the best decision I could have made . Working with Sherine was so refreshing; she brought great ideas to the table and more importantly she listened to everything that I wanted. I have a completely unique space that I am in love with, and had no stress throughout the entire process.

I have used 717 Couture Creative for the interior design of two of my houses! Sheryl came in, met with me about what I needed and wanted, and what I already owned, which was key to staying in my budget. I almost didn't want to move because my old house looked so good! She definitely has the gift of seeing a vision that I cannot see. The attention to detail is something that is typically overlooked these days, but not with Sheryl. I have had other contractors come in for window treatments, etc, and they all commented on my interior decorating and how amazing it looks! I am very pleased and would definitely use her again. Hopefully I won't be moving again anytime soon, but if I do, I know exactly who I would be calling first!

If you are looking for a truly professional approach to your staging needs, Barb Wenzel is top notch. We selected Barb because her hourly quote best suited our needs at this stage of our house marketing strategy and additional reviews. We were not disappointed. Barb came to the house and discussed the potential of our project pursuant to our listing timeline and worked to do a preliminary staging with recommendations for finalizing the job when it came time to list the home. She will return to put the final touches on the project when we do our photography. Barb is not only competent but has excellent people skills and is very easy to work with. I wouldn't hesitate to use her again. Hire her if you need effective staging for your home or design consultation.

Melinda and Amy did a wonderful job decorating our home. It was so easy to work with them. They understood exactly what my family wanted, presented options, and kept in budget. Every single piece was carefully selected to make our home spaces feel and look amazing. Both of them love what they do, are very professional, and they will go above and beyond to make your home look amazing. I highly recommend them, and will continue to hire them in future projects.

I’ve had the pleasure to work with Gathering Wool on two different listings, and will definitely hire again!! I am so happy to have found them, the style of the furniture and decor they use is unlike any other staging company in DFW- modern, cool, and very detailed. I haven’t found any other stagers that use such amazing pieces, I love their style! They completely transformed the homes they staged for me, and they are really nice people! The first project I partnered with them on had been a flip, already on the market for months with another agent, and not selling! I came in as the listing agent and partnered with Gathering Wool. As a result of a few design changes we collaborated on, such as paint and tile, and their modern staging, the house was featured on the Candy’s Dirt blog and sold quickly for full asking price. For my next listing I knew I had to use them again. For that property the buyers connected with the home so much that they decided to make an offer for the property… and all of the furnishings! Gathering Wool is my new secret weapon for turning my listings into inspirational spaces that buyers have amazing emotional responses to! There is a major cool factor. They do so much more within a space compared to other staging companies I’ve worked with, beautiful rugs, plants, art, etc. The fact that they are super professional and kind is just a bonus. I would never hire another staging company!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
