I’m a perfectionist and this crew exceeded my expectations. Jay knew what I wanted, we communicated over the phone only and pictures were sent to me of the samples. They finished the work fast. Ramon, the floor installer and his crew are super nice guys. They installed carpet on the second floor and a beautiful laminate on the first floor. The house looks amazing!!! Thank you!!!

Michael was a huge pleasure to work with! He spent 5 days ripping up the DIY carpet-on-plywood floor job in my 700 sq ft condo and replacing it all with laminate. It looks great and he was really great about communicating any surprises he found hiding under the carpet. I would definitely hire him for my next flooring job!

Lowell did a great job installing laminate flooring on a rental home I bought. I needed the laminate floors installed but the flooring company who supplied the materials did not have a crew immediately available. Lowell essentially matched the flooring company's pricing and did a better job than the flooring company who did work for me before. He leveled off the uneven floor spots where foundation repair was done, avoided using T-moldings on the transition to the bedroom door, indented the laminate floors under the stone fireplace and the living room baseboards. Although it is not part of the install service, he volunteered to lend me his hand truck to move out a large freezer out of the house which made moving it much easier. He is a very trustworthy person I would not hesitate recommending and hiring him again!

Billy’s Services took on the job of replacing all of the water lines leading from the city meter to and throughout my house. As part of that job, his men also replaced the bathroom floor and all of the bathroom fixtures. Additionally, the drain from the kitchen sink was rerouted to allow the water to flow more directly to the sewer line. Because my hot water heater is powered by natural gas, the tank had to be replaced in order to comply with my city’s building code. Once everything was in place, the bathroom floor and walls around the bathtub were tiled and the rest of the walls painted. All of this work was scheduled for completion within a two-week period. Heavy rains, however, caused the job to last a few days longer. Overall I am extremely pleased with the work done by Billy Blankenship. His workers were very friendly, courteous, and helpful. I was given a projected cost before the work ever commenced and the job did not exceed that amount. In my opinion, Billy Blankenship is very honest and is more than willing to work with his potential customers to ensure their complete satisfaction. I would definitely recommend his service to anyone whose home is in need of plumbing and/or remodeling. The only thing I could suggest as an improvement to his company might be better communication with and among those who work for him.

Mike is awesome! His quality of work is unsurpassed. He installed laminate flooring on my second floor and I could not be happier with how great it looks. I would recommend him to everyone and have already given his number out to friends. Thank you Mike so much for the time you put in and for making my home beautiful. Mike takes the time to talk to you and fully explain the process so that you don't feel you're getting taken advantage of like other contractors make you feel.

I've just used Miguel & Carlos Crafmanship Home Improvement to install laminate wood flooring in my kitchen and wood-like tiles in my downstairs bathroom. The floors look great. They were very friendly, professional, and honest. Carlos and Miguel were very patient with all my questions/requests for scenarios and working through the budget to make sure my needs were met. They were knowledgeable, punctual, efficient, and diligent. They had quick responses with calls/texts and were attentive to details. They made sure the finished product was perfect. They completed my project on time with great work at a fair price. I'm very happy with the finished product. I've already booked them for my next house project in November.

We had Texas Hardwood Flooring’s install our hardwood floors in February 2007. They removed old carpet, tile, and wood flooring. Then they installed flooring of approximately 1200 sq. feet of 2 1/4″ wide red oak planks. They also stained an existing set of stairs to match the new hardwood floors. Throughout the week long installation process everyone involved was dependable, professional and courteous. The installers were extremely conscientious about their work and about leaving the house neat and tidy at the end of each day. My family and I were able to live comfortably in our home during the process and at the end had beautiful floors to enjoy. I would highly recommend Texas Hardwood Flooring for any work needing to be done on floors. Their experience, professionalism and dedication to their customers’ satisfaction made the process both easy and very worthwhile. Kathy B. Flower Mound, Texas

So this small local business is the best it gets. I have used MANY flooring contractors and this IS the best: 1. Cesar showed up with samples to choose from and hand plenty of photos of it installed. 2. The prices were very competitive. 3. His crew was incredibly nice and showed up on time and cleaned very well. 4. I would NOT hesitate to use this company. Can’t wait to use them again!!

This was our first experience with hiring someone through Thumbtack and we were a bit apprehensive. And, admittedly, things didn’t get off to a smooth start. Luis came to the house to get the scope of the job and bid it. We walked him through everything we wanted and the original online bid doubled. That is why we understand that online bids are all but useless. Until a contractor sees the job, they should not bid it! We were told that it was a two day job, but when the worker arrived (Luis didn’t show up) he tried to cram it all in to one day. That made us more nervous, but as he got rolling, he realized that it would take two days as Luis had said. Then, after the worker was done for the first day, we walked the job. There was paint spill on the hardwood floors and one of the patch jobs looked like someone stuck bubble gum on the wall and painted over it. There was also a divot in one of the walls caused by a drawer shutting on it and pulling out the paint when it was opened. Later, Luis admitted that he had done that when he checked the work. I would have thought he’d have fixed it. We let Luis know of these things that needed fixing and he agreed that on day two, they’d be handled. When the workers came back on day two, they were a little late. But they showed up on a Sunday as promised so they get extra credit for that. Day 2 required repairs to door hinges that another contractor had “fixed” and the “fixed” again. But the guys from Tyler’s did it right. They pulled the door frame apart, reinforced the wood, and reassembled the whole thing. By the end of the work the door swings like it was new and you’d never know that it had been repaired. It looked great. After the guys left I found myself cleaning up a little paint and some door handles and a counter top. It sounds like there were problems, but the reality is that, as someone who hires contractors for a living, there’s no perfect contractor. There’s always a “punch list” of things that need to be fixed or finished. I’m handy enough to do some of the final cleanup on my own and it’s easier to do it than to schedule the contractor to come back. I give these guys Four Stars because the work has all been done very well. The workers didn’t hesitate to do what needed to be done. They aren’t lazy like others I have seen and there was no argument about touching things up. I don’t get hung up on the original online bid being lower than the final bid, because I didn’t supply photos or dimensions when I submitted my request for bids. We will be calling these guys again.

Just say I was impressed with Everitt from the beginning. Out of the 3 contractors I contacted to bid my drywall project, Everitt was the only one who showed up on time, communicated clearly and provided a bid when he said he would. The others either showed up late, wanted to play games or asked for me to disclose other bids so they could low bid their project. I have no time for that type of business. To say that I am very thorough and OCD would be an understatement. Everitt never lost patience with me, always answered my questions and answered my calls or texts within a few minutes. His work was superior!!! He worked hard, on weekends, evenings whatever it took to get my job done in time for us to be able to move in by our upcoming deadline. I started off just hiring him for drywall but, later in the process had him paint, do trim work and install vinyl plank and laminate flooring. I highly recommend Everitt for your project. He is a guy of integrity, hard work and attention to detail. He went above and beyond what I expected. You will not be disappointed! Great Job!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
