Great guy and overall experience. He was polite and informative, as I asked questions about other projects in the house. I would recommend him to anyone. Look forward to working with him again.

We hired Rosalio to remove a popcorn ceiling and wallpaper from our kitchen and laundry room area. He was very efficient, quick and clean. The walls and ceilings look beautiful. So much so that we had him move on in to the dining room where the actual ceilings were coming down. He had to remove all the drywall and re do the entire ceiling. He did this in a day, plus added crown molding! He cleans up after himself and gets the job done right the first time. We are very impressed with him and his crew and have already referred him to other neighbors in our area to do work for them. His pricing is reasonable as well! We just love him and he will be spending a lot of time in our 1980's house in the future as we continue the updating of this property. S. Day

Gerardo did a great job repairing my sagging gutters. He also let me know that the wood boards I thought were rotted were not and didn't need to be replaced. He also repaired cracks in the mortar in the brick on the house. He also sealed and caulked gutters in places where water was leaking. I would use him again for any gutter/house repair and will more than likely call him for any handyman work.

I discovered water dripping in during a really bad storm. I submitted my request on Thumbtack that night, called a couple of companies that responded the next day. Matthew was able to come out to my house the morning after we spoke and made some repairs right away. It was supposed to rain again that day, so I was worried about more possible leaking. He even accommodated my work schedule to arrive at a time convenient for me. Thank you!

CJ helped me repaint my 3400 square foot home. Ceilings, walls everything. He was really great to work with. I called a couple references before selecting them. The price was the reason I selected them. They were well below the others and I was worried I wouldn't be happy. In full disclosure my home was empty and it probably made it easier on his crew. He also installed crown molding in my living room. I am so happy I selected them. They just came back about a month after finishing the job to clean or touch up any of the items on my tick list just like a new home builder would. When I stain my patio or instal patio blinds, I will call Carsa.

Mitchell replaced two of my bathtubs, along with the faucets, drains and shower heads. He replaced the existing Sheetrock with concrete backer board, to make sure his work would last a lifetime. Then tiled them both beautifully, and even cut a window into one. A couple saw him cutting tile out front, then stopped by a few days later asking if the house was for rent. We showed them the house and new bathrooms and they put the deposit down that day. We never even put a For Rent sign in the yard. He also finished everything in the time expected and couldn't have done a better job. Not to mention he was very nice and professional. I highly recommend him to anyone for home remodels and/or repairs.

A&E did my exterior house paint and they did a fabulous job! The team was very thorough and took their time to make sure it was done right. They worked with me throughout the process and encouraged feedback. I got many estimates for the job and they beat all the quotes. So I got an amazing result at a great price. Couldn't be happier! I was so pleased from beginning to end with their service that I have recommended them to a friend. I will definitely use them again in the future and highly recommend A&E Remodeling.

Had one of the guys move some sink plumbing and install a vent and recessed light in my bathroom. He was very knowledgeable about the work I wanted him do, personable, and he did an excellent job. He's one of those rare people who has pride in their work and cares about the final product as if it it were in his own house. Wouldn't hesitate to have him work on my house again.

We hired New Life Construction to replace the faschia, soffit and other boards around our house with Hardie Board. New Life is working with us in replacing these boards in increments. We have completed one side so far and they have done an excellent job. We are quite pleased with the care they have taken in picking up trash and just the overall care of making sure seams are sealed really tightly. We have had squirrel issues in the past and we really appreciate their paying attention to detail since we do not want more squirrel issues in the attic.

Overall Manny did a great job. He and his team do 5 star work. All of the work he did in my house is wonderful and I get several compliments. My doors, my sheet rock, my paint, and my fireplace are all beautiful. My only feedback is on communication. There were a few slight hiccups in communication that delayed some projects, and a few times I was told something would be done on a certain day, and it oftentimes was done later than that. And I really never knew if or when people would be showing up to do work. But I would recommend Manny and his team to anyone who asked because I really am very happy with my results. Thank you!

I had 3 doors that were not sealing properly and were then leaking in to our garage or house every time it rained. Robert didn't jump to any conclusions on what might be wrong, but came and walked through it all before making recommendations for repairs. He was very flexible on time and fit our ASAP deadline. He's also come back since to do some extra sealing. Great work!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
