John Hanrahan is a very professional assembler. He was on time, courteous, and efficient. He does large and small jobs. He has managerial experience with furniture assembly in the corporate world. In addition to perfectly assembling the many pieces of my wooden kitchen island with granite top, he tightened loose screws in some older Ikea furniture that had not been professionally assembled, and he hung several pieces of art - all for a very affordable amount. I recommend John as trustworthy and highly capable in his craft! Cheryl

Fina did a lot of things for my house recently ..like painting the whole interior, tiling, few cabinet additions etc. etc. All the work whatever she did was execellent and her price was very competitive. She is more than a painter, she is an artist, truly.

Working with Mario and his contractor Mike was extremely satisfying. Both Mario and Mike were outstandingly professional, eager to please the customer, hard working and very flexible with my schedule. Not only did I receive outstanding workmanship but I gained two friends. Mario is a very compassionate and friendly man so much so he offered a job to a good friend of mine who was down on his luck and thanks to Mario he is now learning a new profession. I would recommend him to anyone anytime and any job! I just want to add the work that he accomplished as the original bid was for refinishing and due to the extent of the damage he ended up having to pretty much remodel the entire kitchen. He created handcrafted cabinets drawers and shelves to my standard and expectations as well as repaired and window ledge that was damaged and also painted the entire kitchen and repaired some tile work all within the budget given by the insurance company.

MJ communicated effectively and fast. My armoire was dark mahogany color. She was asked to paint it white. She ran into some glitches- but took the time to do it right. Fantastic finished product. We agreed upon $215. She actually charged $275. I did not quibble because the job turned out to be more difficult/taking more time. It was a fair price. I am asking her to come back to refinish my front door.

Initially, I hired Kirk to do my deck that needed to be refinished. He was very professional, prompt, and detailed with the work done. I decided not to only do the deck work with him, but also staining my kitchen cabinets. What a difference a color can make! Kirk provided great insight on picking out a good color for the cabinets as well as adding some really cool looking pull handles to finish the look. Overall I could not be happier with the work Kirk and his team did and definitely will reach out to him for any future projects.

Well my experience with True Design was very unique, I had my parents bathrooms remodeled. They are elderly and they needed the walk-in tubs and showers with seats and they just did an excellent job. Their kitchen was very old school and they didn't have a dishwasher so they remodeled and installed one along with refinishing the cabinets and the counter tops. I think since then True Design has gone to smaller jobs but this one was a major undertaking and it was really a great experience because it was very non-intrusive and they worked with us because we remained in the home while the construction was going on. I would recommend them for any job large or small that you need to have someone you can trust to listen to your design ideas and to expand on those to come out with a really fantastic result.

Billie Nixon took an old beat up armoire that had been in my mom's barn and made it very beautiful and functional again. She was full of ideas on how to address trouble areas and kept me up-to-date on her progress throughout the course of the refinishing job. This was a big job since my mom liked to cover enamel paint in bright colors on old furniture. This piece had at least three layers of brown, blue, and green to get through and Billie made the white come out looking great. We were pleased with the service, the turn around (10 days with the rain), and the price. She is an honest woman who takes a great deal of pride in her work! Thanks Billie!

I love the large storage cabinet Justin built to fit a specific space in my house. It's exactly what I wanted. He came to my house to see the space, took measurements and we talked about what I wanted. He built a beautiful shaker style cabinet at home and then installed it where I needed it. The whole turn around time was excellent and the price was fair. He was great to work with and I recommend him highly!

He was reliable, courteous, conscientious, considerate and skilled. He corrected anything that was not up to his high standards or mine. He always left a clean work site. His work was excellent. He removed ceiling fans, clad an exposed, laminated beam, trimmed the cladding and rehung the fans on a vaulted ceiling. Refinished three doors, installed molding around five doors, corrected problems with two doors’ original installation, installed door knobs on all. Installed baseboard in two rooms. Extensively remodeled an office including: Installed tongue-in-groove aromatic red cedar on one wall Custom framed three windows, two in aromatic red cedar and one in pine. Completed installation of a half-done bead-board ceiling Installed track lighting on said ceiling. Painted said ceiling and the pine window framing Installed wiring raceway along three walls to carry computer wiring. Added a duplex plug to one wall. Finished and installed a “barn door” on an office wall allowing door to slide open and closed without taking up room needed for office furniture. Did a beautiful job. Built a wheelchair ramp along an uneven exit to facilitate safe passage for a newly handicapped resident. I will happily employ him again. Thanks, again.

Richard was amazing to work with. Very professional, listened to what we wanted and on time. We remodeled our master bathroom with two custom cabinets on each side, featuring drawers and slide outs galore! Granite countertops and soft close hinges add to the overall quality. This guy is a great craftsman and I wouldn't hesitate to reccomend or hire him again! In fact, I'm already making a list of things for Richard to build and remodel more things now that the bathroom turned out so awesome!

I stumbled upon Tom's professional profile on Houzz last fall (Sept. 2013) in search of someone who could refinish my oak kitchen cabinets in a gray finish I had found in a magazine. I knew it was a complicated process and based on his profile called him to to come take a look at my project. He looked at the photo of the finish and immediately said he could do it. From the first sample, I knew he got what I wanted. Tom is a master craftsman and consummate professional. There are no shortcuts and all of his work is done with exacting detail. I would highly recommend him, and I have him working on another project now.

Brian has completed a number of projects for me, and I think he's great. He is a meticulous carpenter and a creative and skilled craftsman. He remodeled my laundry room by removing cabinets and adding custom shelves & crown, it looks great. He added a trash station to my island cabinet, which is so much more functional. He installed custom shelves in a bedroom closet; he removed the metal ones and added nice painted shelves making the space much more usable. He also replaced my front door and added knobs and pulls to my kitchen. I plan to use him for future projects, specifically custom shelves in my master closet. I highly recommend Brian – he’s fantastic.

Jaime responded to my Thumbtack request within five days, and he and his father offered to come out to our home in Round Rock (on Sunday, no less!) before the holidays to look at our project. They were very thorough in asking us what we wanted for our custom built-in installation -- down to the paint color and special drawers, etc. They gave us fair pricing on the work and also ideas on design. For example, they suggested staining the top to match our light grey wood floors. (Close up in picture attached.) Now having used our new built-ins for a month, I can attest to the excellent quality of materials they used in the design. I also love the two slow-closing drawers that they included in the project. On top of doing high quality work, Jaime was able to get our cabinets installed in less than two weeks - even with holiday schedules! I really appreciated the fantastic work he did, and I would use Ramirez Cabinets and Remodeling again in a heartbeat.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

    How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

    Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

    • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
    • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
    • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
    • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

How much does it cost to refinish kitchen cabinets?

Cabinet refinishing revives dull or dinged-up doors and drawers. The cost of cabinet refinishing will vary based on factors such as the number of linear feet of cabinetry you have, the amount of nicks and scratches that need repair, the level of detail on your cabinets, and more. The pros typically will remove the cabinet doors and then sand or strip them down to create a beautifully smooth new surface. After prepping the surface with primer as needed, the pros may then repaint or stain the doors to give them a new lease on life. Cabinets with intricate detail or extensive surface damage will likely cost more to refinish, as they will take more time and effort. Keep in mind that you should only elect to do cabinet refinishing if the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you plan to keep your current kitchen layout for a number of years. The investment will be wasted if the cabinet boxes are in disrepair and will need replacement soon, or if you’re planning a remodel in two years. The national average price range for cabinet refinishing is between $1,500 and $6,000.
