I recently hired them to do a winter inspection. They were professional, knowledgeable, and very comprehensive. Everything was top notch. They also were able to determine an issue I was having with one room of my house not heating and cooler like the rest. Will be having them come out and fix this as well. Highly recommended!

Chris Fischer was a pleasure to work with and I would use his services again in a heartbeat. I had several minor home repairs (oven, disposal, kitchen faucet, microwave) that he thoroughly diagnosed, explained the costs, how long it would take to order parts, and repair them. His rates are very reasonable and his quality & professionalism are second-to-none!

Jason responded quickly to my quote request and showed up on time. I had a previous quote for a replacement damper for almost $700. Jason quickly determined there was nothing wrong with the damper and that it was just a wiring issue. He also set up my Nest thermostats which I couldn't get working. He charged only a fraction of what I would have been charged and saved me time and frustration. I highly recommend Jason and will definitely contact him again for my next a/c issue.

Corinne is amazing! Very professional, knowledgeable and so nice. Being new to the area and looking for a long term relationship, I researched a lot of A/C/Heat businesses and it was the best decision going with Britton Service Group. Corinne was very patient with me answering all my many questions on my first call to them and ultimately we became their customer. They have been taking wonderful care of us having come out in the beginning to do a semi-annual of the AC system, then in January a semi-annual of our Heating system and again recently for our semi-annual of the AC system. Jon, the Technician is great. On time, every time, actually arriving earlier at my request so I could get on in to work, yet did a thorough check of our systems each time; replacing our attic filter and giving me a Heating Checklist of 28 different General/Gas inspections checked! The A/C/Heat Pump Checklist back in the late summer and again last month.....Jon checked 29 different things, including writing down pertinent Temperatures regarding our Condenser and Evaporator. Britton Service Group is so Caring and Professional. Thank you! A Very Happy Customer.....

Spartan was very quick to respond to my request and even came out on a Sunday to do a hydrostatic test required by my insurance company. In all he installed 2 sinks, 2 faucets, a dishwasher, disposal, replaced shut off valves and supply lines. Replaced a gas valve to turn on/off my gas stove/oven, cleaned and replaced a toilet tank and put in all new inerds. Charged me what I thought was a very reasonable price, especially for coming out on such short notice and on a weekend. Evaluated and gave me several options to replace a tub that is leaking. We will most definitely be hiring him to do the tub replacement as soon as my husband and I determine which route we want to take on that job. He and his apprentice, son, were very easy and nice to work with and communicate with. They did a beautiful and professional job and cleaned up the job site very nicely before leaving. Best plumbing experience!

Couldn't have asked for a better company to come help us get our AC back up and running. Took the time to explain the issues we were having and a break down of what he was going to do to fix our issue. Mr. Rios was great and he helped us get back up and running and cooling off in no time. Definitely would refer this company to all friends and family. Very thankful!!!

I had Brian installing/ relocating a condenser unit and running the copper lines for the system. He have been very prompt on my request, completing the project in a manner of couple of days from my request. He offered me a competitive pricing and even if he did more than what we agreed on, he respected he's quote and did not charge me extra. He's team was clean, respectfully and they left the site in an outstanding condition. I will definitely use Brian's services on the future and recommend him, with the confidence of an outstanding job done.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.
