Amir was AWESOME. We had a small wedding reception and were not allowed to use a speaker. The acoustics in the building were not great but that didn't stop Amir from bringing down the house. He sounded amazing and fed off the energy of the attendees when the dancing started. His song list was great and he even learned a new song just for our wedding. He was on time, polite and courteous. We will definitely call him and recommend him for future events. Thanks for adding to our special day.

Kylah offers a very comfortable environment which is important for nervous people like myself. She was able to plan out our goals, was very flexible with listening to bands I wanted to sing along with for practice, and described how the body is effected when you sing a certain way or how your voice will sound when you do certain things to your body. That extra knowledge is vital if you want to learn to stay healthy and perform strong. Overall, the lesson went very well and we plan to meet again a week from now. Thanks Kylah!

Matthew was the musician for our wedding at Driftwood Wine Vineyard. He was the perfect match for an outdoor setting. I found him online and loved his sound. He came to our house and played a few songs and we were amazed by his talent. He also learned several songs we wanted him to play including our first dance song.

I took guitar lessons with Tim a couple years ago before he moved away. I knew his skill and talent from his previous work in bands and it was a no-brainer for me to go to him. His ability to assess where you are at as a student and apply the proper curriculum to help advance you in your craft is what you would expect from a quality teacher such as Tim. If you're looking to open your creativity, you can't go wrong seeking guidance with him. He's got my recommendation 🖒👍

We hired Taylor to perform at our wedding ceremony and cocktail hour. For a little context, the ceremony and reception were out of doors, the ceremony involved playing church music while a cantor-led congregation sang, and the cocktail hour involved another outdoor spot and a shift to jazz. Taylor did a wonderful job as the pianist for our wedding ceremony and cocktail hour. He was extremely responsive, punctual and professional--and I cannot stress enough how grateful we were for his flexibility as well. There are always going to be little surprises when planning or hosting an event and it was such a pleasure to work with a pro who could adapt and carry on throughout!

I'm so glad we found Brittany to play at our wedding!! She was so easy to work with, and very responsive to our requests. She easily accommodated our special song requests, and helped us pick out other beautiful songs to fill the ceremony. She arrived at our venue on time and ready to play, and did so fantastically well. She is a very talented musician, and our guests commented on how much they loved the harp music; it was the perfect accompaniment to our wedding day. It was an excellent experience working with her - probably one of the easiest vendors we worked with in our wedding planning process overall. I would very highly recommend her for any wedding or other event, and would gladly hire her again.

Mr. Del Bosque was a very good teacher for the three years I had him as my private lessons teacher. He will teach you all you need to know to be a successful saxophonist. He will teach you the fundementals like scales, tonal excerises, arpeggios, etc. When I was in middle school, I made the TMEA All Region Band with his critique and help. But I feel that Mr. Del Bosque could've taught at a faster pace because the pace felt slow to me, but that's just my preference. It really depends on the person. Overall, Mr. Del Bosque was a great teacher and will be perfect for anyone who's looking to start to play the saxophone or already has been playing, but is looking for professional help.

We can only rave at how great this little band was at my daughter's wedding last May in Austin. David does a great job of communicating and was very flexible with a number of special requests which helped to make it such a great day. They came early, and stayed late, even helping us to pick up afterwards. The music is very precise and FUN!!! Steel Betty played quiet prayerful tunes during the ceremony, and gradually amped up the energy as the festivities followed. Highly recommended! Stephen N.

I loved working with Turner who played the music for my daughter's semi-outdoor wedding, seating and ceremony. He played the songs we asked for beautifully, plus other other beautiful songs as well! I wish we had used him for MORE special music! I loved it! He was on time and fit into the ceremony easily without having to be at the rehearsal. I thought his price was reasonable compared to one other quote I received. THANK YOU, Turner, for helping to create a beautiful ceremony for our family!

I run a variety dance band called The Sophisticates based in Austin, TX. Philip and his techs from Head Water have provided consistent, professional service for every gig we've had the last two years. I have dealt with many sound technicians in my 30 years in this business, believe me when I say Philip Ramirez is a rising star in this industry!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
