When my 85 year old mother called me at 5AM telling me her house was flooded I didn’t know where to turn. I live two hours away and the rain was still pounding down as the whole Houston area flooded. I tried ServePro but they said there were 5 calls ahead of mine already. Unsure of who else might help in such a situation I Googled “flood mitigation” and clicked on a link that resulted. It was Thumbtack. I entered my information and proceeded to search for more options. Within 10 minutes Christian from Texaclean called. He got to my Mom’s house within an hour and assessed the situation, providing pictures taken on his cell phone with a quote and strategy for cleaning up the mess. Thankfully, my Mom hired him on the spot and he had suctioned most of the water out and had dehumidifiers and blowers in the house by the time I got there. Over the following days they moved the furniture off the wet carpets and pulled out the soggy padding underneath and applied antimicrobial treatment. After the carpets were dry they replaced the padding and put the carpets back down and then steam cleaned and re stretched it. Then they moved the furniture back. Throughout the entire process Christian kept me in the loop with pictures and asked questions to help my mother. He was truly concerned about her well being, offering to bring her food and take her shopping if needed. He sent his Martini and Stephen back to set her TV back up for her after the carpet had been pulled up so she could still watch her shows and sent cell phone pictures to make sure the furniture was back where it should be in the end. They were very kind and respectful to her while there and checked on her, responding to any needs she might have such as taking out the heavy trash on trash day. They made things so much better than they might have been for both her and myself. I was able to return to work knowing she was getting the help she needed and she wasn’t alone. We focus so much on the bad in people, but if we look, we can see how Christ’s love shines bright and strong in those who help in such awful situations. They treated us with such compassion and kindness. Thanks to Christian, Martini and Stephen mom’s life is back on track. I have never been in a situation like this before and so don’t know what people charge, but as best I can tell their rates were very reasonable for all that they did! I recommend them highly. We focus so much on the bad in people around us that we forget to see how brightly Christ’s light shines in others all around us, especially those with the stomach and strength to help in such awful situations.

Fred and his crew are simply the best! They are punctual, professional and friendly. They take pride in their work and the laminate wood flooring they installed for us come out better than we ever expected it too. Their workmanship is very impressive and the pricing was fair as well. He even educated us on the best ways to save money with the materials costs and recommended the products that he trusts and uses the most. We will definitely use/recommend Fred for any future flooring projects for us and our friends! A++ all the way!

After multiple estimates and offers which varied greatly. Their quote and another were very close. I chose them after reading the reviews - and I made a great choice. Price included installation, removal of carpet, moving of big furniture, and materials needed except flooring which we bought. They were quick to get me an estimate and then let me make a decision without any pressure. They were able to start just as soon as I had the floor delivered which they were willing to go get for us. They showed up with plenty of manpower (we were lucky as another job was delayed so more workers for us) and ready to move our furniture upstairs which was not needed as we decided to do it ourselves so they could start sooner. Carpet removal was done with no damage to the walls or baseboards. They did not disappoint and were able to put the an entire upstairs of 3 rooms and a hallway with bamboo flooring in ONE day. We were originally quoted FOUR days to include stairs to complete the job. TWO days for stairs alone. Our stairs were not done due to waiting on special snubnose that was to arrive here later in August which was not a problem as they stated to let them know when it would arrive and they would complete the job. The finishing to include painting of quarter round is to be completed when the stairs are done at our choice (they filled the nail holes and tidied up the quarter round and did the transition work as well already at our request instead of waiting) so we moved our furniture back in. (Painting of quarter round and baseboards is a small extra price as they hire it out). We paid for the work done and owe them the amount for the stairs. I was worried when trying to choose an installer as we had issues in the past, but they have exceeded my expectations and then some. Calling or texting Eduardo gets an almost immediate response. They are a family owned business who takes pride in their work and it shows. We will use them again as we already bought the flooring for an additional room upstairs to be done at a later time. Wife already wants to have rooms done downstairs now based on the work done upstairs. Will update review once work is complete.

Thank you Will for the great job you guys did on my new granite counter tops! Will was very helpful in helping me select the granite that would bring out my cabinets, wood floors and wall color and tie them all together. It was perfect. His guys were very professional even when there were some small rough spots in a piece of the granite they stayed and buffed them out until we were completely happy with the counter top. Will was very quick to respond to any calls. The guys were there on time and did the job in 1 day! We will definitely be using Will for future projects. Thanks Again, Kelly and Brian Anderson

Les worked for me on three occasions, each time for fairly extensive periods, averaging 2 - 3 months each time. Originally, I wanted to fix up our old place before selling it. The bathrooms were the main area of interest, and he suggested using tile for the lavatories which had originally been done in cultured marble that had yellowed and stained over time. The finished results looked outstanding. When he had completed the majority of the original work, a roof leak following a storm damaged my wooden floors and the ceiling and wall sheetrock upstairs. A few months later, Les returned and re-floored partial sections of two upstairs rooms. The original flooring had been applied with glue, so it was extremely difficult to get the floor level again so that new wood could be laid, but he managed to do so, and the net result was that the new flooring blended in seamlessly. Damage to the ceiling was also repaired expertly. Finally, when we moved into our new place, Les 1) made a number of sheetrock repairs throughout the house, 2) repainted most of the house (2400 sq. feet with several flights of stairs), 3) removed the carpeting and refloored the downstairs bedroom/office using hardwood, and 4) built a custom wall-to-wall (8' wide by 8' high) bookcase in one of the upstairs rooms, and 4) applied an epoxy coating to the garage. I was extremely satisfied with the quality of all of the work and feel confident in saying that Les can take on any challenge given to him. He is also dependable and trustworthy.

Juan did an outstanding job on the laminate flooring in my townhouse! He was a little slow at responding to emails so at one point I wasn't sure if he was going to take the job, but he stuck to his word and did the job as described. The end results exceeded my expectations! Took him only a day to install and the job is beyond professional. Thank you, Juan!

Ivan did the tile for all of our bathrooms and he installed brick flooring throughout our kitchen and master bathroom. He was meticulous, very detailed and cares very, very much about his final product. He was also very helpful to us during one renovation in a more broad sense: he introduced us to other great contractors who were a huge help to us. He was great to work with and I'd use him again for sure!

After rebuilding from hurricane Harvey and a few bad experiences with contractors, I called upon Floor Coverings International (Katy) for all new carpet and flooring throughout the house and found nothing but professional results from the entire company. Very reasonable and excellent materials. The work was completed in 2 days while still living in our home with total respect for our home and furnishings. They proved to me that GOOD customer service still exists. Highly recommend this company for all your flooring needs.

Did great work and price was honest and reasonable. They did the tile work for the dinning room floor, bathroom floor, and bathtub surround. In addition, they replaced the bathroom vanity, painted the kitchen cabinets, and applied epoxy to the kitchen's laminate counter. Levi was responsive to my texts and phone calls, and didn't have any problem with the additional requests made once construction started.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
