Blast did and excellent job reinstalling the molding on the ground floor of our townhouse that was flooded out a few weeks ago. I called him and he was here the next day to take a look at the place and he volunteered to come and work all day on Sunday with another guy in order to get the job done. They had to work the entire day and they never quit. He was very polite and friendly to me and my family throughout the day. He even volunteered to come back this week to repair the vanity in my bathroom and paint the entire downstairs. Overall, you couldn't ask for a better contractor and worker. I would recommend him and his crew to anyone and everyone. We have a number of other things that we repairing or replacing and we're going to ask him to do it all.

I hired Herb to install ceiling fans and to do some plumbing work including leak repair under the kitchen sink. And it was a nice experience. Not only because the job was well done but also because of his positive attitude towards his work. Herb respects and likes the work he is doing, knows what he is doing and he does it well. Also he does not mind educating you about it. He also made a trip to Home Depot to get some parts. I would definitely hire him again for any electrical and plumbing work and I would also recommend him to others. Mufti

I recently remodeled my home, and purchased new kitchen appliances. Our Maytag refrigerator had been in our home for 3 weeks prior to receiving about 10 inches of water in our home during Hurricane Harvey. After the flood my refrigerator stopped cooling. I was told by an authorized Whirlpool representative who visited my home as well as by numerous independently owned appliance repair companies (both over the phone and in person) that the entire refrigerator unit needed to be replaced. John with Honest Appliance Repair assessed the problem both over the phone and via the Thumbtack app. He installed the necessary part, and has saved me thousands of dollars, as I was able to keep my existing refrigerator. Thank God for a Honest man and a Honest company. I will definitely be using this company for all of my future appliance repair needs.

My fridge hadn’t been functioning properly, it was not making ice and it wasn’t cooling enough. I contacted this company that was referred to me by a coworker. The experience was amazing. The Technician notified me when he was on his way. He was very punctual and professional. Took care of the issue and now it’s working like new. This is my second time using this company. I will definitely be using them in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes refrigerators?

Typically, appliance repair technicians who offer refrigeration repair also work with washers, dryers, dishwashers and other household appliances. While there is no formal training required to be an appliance repair technician, consider certification requirements, as the technician should know how to safely work with refrigerants (the chemical that keeps your fridge cold) and substitute refrigerants such as HFCs. You should also read reviews to get a sense of the pro’s experience and reputation. The appliance repair pro will come to your home, bringing all the necessary tools for diagnosis. They may need to order parts to complete the job, but all the work will take place in your home. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How long do fridges last?

Refrigerators can last 10 to 20 years, although the most common lifespan is about 13 years. If your fridge is acting up, consider its current age when deciding whether to invest in repairs or buy a new one. Common easy fixes include faulty thermostats, dirty coils and clogged drain lines. Thermostats and dirty coils can be generally be fixed for an average cost of $80-$100. Clogged drain lines, which usually cause leaks, can often be fixed for under $200.

More complex refrigeration repairs such as replacing a bad compressor or replenishing low refrigerant can cost more because of expensive parts and higher labor. A new compressor costs an average of $200, not including labor. If labor is an average of $75-$100 per hour, and the repair takes 3 hours, you’re looking at roughly $500. Consider the age and purchase cost of your fridge; investing $350 in a $600 fridge that is 8 years old may not be cost-effective.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Refrigerator repair generally costs a fraction of the price of a new fridge and shouldhave your appliance up and running again in no time. The problems your refrigerator is experiencing and the parts required to fix it will affect your repair costs. Where you live can affect labor rates, which will raise or lower your costs. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Diagnostic fees: $50-$100. Repair pros often have a service call fee or diagnostic fee to account for their time traveling to your location with all their tools to assess the problem. If you choose to have them repair the fridge, most pros then credit this fee toward your repair cost.
  • Parts: $20-$500. A new compressor averages $200, an icemaker $300, and computerized components such as touch screens and control boards average $300 or more.
  • Basic repairs: $180-$400, including parts. This price range can include repairing the evaporator or fan motor.
