Lori Duff has been a God-send for me these past 3 weeks, as she has launched me into a holistic plan for my long-term fitness, health and wellness. Lori cares about all aspects of her clients' weight loss needs, and any triggers that have prevented someone from previously reaching their fitness goals. She is always on time and prepares for our sessions in advance. In my first 10 days I lost 5lbs, thanks to the hard work in my sessions with Lori, and the nutritional education she is providing me. My goal is to drop 3 dress sizes....and I know I will get there while I am training with the Fitness Advocate, Lori Duff! ~KP

I've worked out with the Fitness Professional since the start of the year and plan on using them in the future as well. I have worked out with personal trainers before, but my experience with Randy has definitely been more worthwhile. His approach is much more varied than trainers I've worked with previously, focusing more on overall health/fitness than just cranking on weights at the gym. Within a short period, I felt my energy levels increase significantly. It's also helped me develop a routine that is more flexible so I can still workout at home on my own time between sessions. It's helped get me in a routine where I feel the need to workout if I go too many days between, which is one of the hardest things about working out regularly. I would definitely recommend Randy to anyone truly wanting to begin working out and develop a proper routine to reach their fitness goals whatever they may be.

When I started my search for a personal trainer, I did not know where to start. I knew I would likely need the person to meet me at my office gym because I work many hours. Also, knowing myself and my likelihood of continuing a workout routine and sticking to it decreases for each pause point (getting out of the office, driving out of the office garage to a gym, etc) that is baked into the process of getting to in an effective day's workout. I found Gigi on Thumbtack, reviewed her website, and made contact. Her response time was fantastic. We setup a time to discuss what I was looking for by phone. During the convo by phone, she recommended us meeting face-to-face (no pressure and no charge for either the call or the f-t-f meeting). Upon meeting her, I was impressed with her punctuality, communicating abilities (text, ability to use GPS for address locations, asking the questions I would expect when starting a workout routine, etc), her attentiveness to my answers to questions, and a no-pressure approach to discussing my training needs. I decided to try personal gym training for the first time and bought a package of sessions. I have now finished one package of sessions and feel stronger and have noticed more definition in my body tone. If you are considering personal training, be honest with yourself about: 1) how hard you push yourself when you work out alone. I know without a doubt that I would probably given about 50% (at best) of the push during my workout that I gave when working with Gigi. 2) the likelihood of actually getting to the location to workout (there are always more appealing options that we all rationalize our excuses away when deciding to blow off our solo attempts to go to the gym--friends meeting for dinner, family obligations, errands, and the list is endless) when going solo to the gym 3) the time (even a couple of hours a week) and the money you put into your workout really is for YOU, your health (physical and mental), and your life. I recommend Gigi for your training needs. She always has a variety of workouts (and even brings many different tools with her to add variety to the workout), takes notes of the workouts completed each visit, and strikes the right balance of push with a careful eye on your actual capacity as to not push into unhealthy territory for your body and physical level--this point is important because there are so many people with different capacities, different ages, needs, etc. Reach out to her, contact her, you will not be disappointed. Take a step for YOU and your health.

Chad worked with me after I got out of the Marine Corps. I have never had the results I saw when Chad was training me. He pushed me past my limits but in a way that was safe and enjoyable. I learned a lot from him and would highly recommend him to anyone wanting to improve their health and fitness.

After trying out numerous personal trainers (5 or 6 at least) I've now been a client of Brad Firestone's for the past 18+ years. During that time, he rehabbed me through a serious rotator cuff tear (helping me to heal without surgery) various knee issues (as I've aged) and in general, has helped me maintain a high level of health and fitness through my forties and fifties. Along with remaining highly knowledgable and current in his field, Brad's professionalism is impeccable. It's frankly hard for me to imagine anyone out there who could possibly do this job better than Brad.

I’ve never had a personal trainer before, but was introduced to GYMGUYZ through a health fair at work. I was hesitant if I would stick with it, but once they explained the group sessions I was eager to sign up with my friends. They drive a truck full of equipment straight to you and teach you something new every time. We’ve been working with Charlene who always brings her high spirits to keep you motivated and is a text away to answer any questions! She’s been learning what motivates each of us and adjusts her practice to get us better results. I really am pleased I’ve found a way to get motivated with my friends without having to make the trip to the gym!

I approached Lauren to create a custom running plan for myself. Knowing her background as a cross-country runner, I knew the plan would be made with high standards in mind. Needless to say, it greatly surpassed my expectations and was made with such precision, addressing every concern I had as a runner. If you're looking for a custom plan made by an encouraging and skilled coach, Lauren can get the job done.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a health coach?

A health coach is a service provider you can hire to help you realize your wellness goals. You can hire a health and wellness coach to guide you through life changes, keep you focused on weight loss or fitness goals, help boost your mental health, and more. Many health coaches work with their clients for set periods of time as the client moves toward a measurable goal. Wellness coaches come from varying backgrounds, and may have different areas of focus depending on their education and training. Research potential coaches by reading their reviews, researching their academic and personal backgrounds, and learning about any certifications they have earned from coaching institutes. Often, health and wellness coaches sell coaching packages ranging from three to six months or longer, depending on the client’s needs. The average national cost for an individual health coach session ranges from $60 to $90, although prices may range as low as $30 or up to $130 or more, depending on your location and the coach.

Are nutritionists covered by health insurance?

Nutrition counseling can be a critical component of good health care, especially for people recently diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol who need to adhere to a specific diet. People also meet with nutritionists for help developing a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet, developing an eating plan to lose weight or gain muscle, or improving their sports performance by changing their diet. Nutritionists may be covered by health insurance depending on your reason for meeting with them. Nutrition counseling is more likely to be covered if it is part of a doctor-prescribed treatment for a particular medical condition, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or coronary heart disease. For example, Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services only for people diagnosed with diabetes or kidney disease, as long as they get a referral from their doctor. Also, insurance providers more often cover nutrition visits if the patient has been referred to a registered dietitian within the carrier’s network of providers. Insurance plans vary greatly, so research your benefits before visiting a nutritionist.

How much does a nutritionist cost?

A nutritionist provides expertise and guidance to help clients with all diet-related health matters, including losing weight, gaining muscle, improving their sports performance, and managing diabetes or high cholesterol. Nutritionists can help people learn to follow special diets in a healthy way, such as becoming vegetarian or vegan or developing a low-sodium or gluten-free eating plan. The average national cost of a nutritionist is $60 to $100. Nutritionists often require an initial consultation with a new client, during which they’ll take a medical history, assess the client’s nutritional needs, and determine the best course of action; this first meeting usually averages $100-$120 for a 45-minute to 90-minute consultation. Subsequent nutritional counseling sessions generally cost less, ranging from an average of $45 for a half-hour session to $60-$90 for a one-hour session. Like many professional service providers, nutritionists may offer discounts through package pricing. For instance, a one-month package with two sessions and email support costs an average of $190; a three-month package with three sessions and email support costs an average of $360; and a six-month package with six sessions and email support costs an average of $540.

What is a holistic wellness coach?

When you want to reach new heights with your health and wellness, consider hiring a holistic wellness coach. Much like a health coach, a holistic wellness coach is focused on your well-being and meets with you in one-on-one sessions to help you identify and reach your targeted goals. A holistic wellness coach will typically have you take all components of your life into account when working to achieve your goals. If your goal is to lose weight, a holistic wellness coach will not only offer recommendations for your diet and exercise, but also discuss your emotional health, your work/life balance, your spiritual side, and each area of your life that affects your ability to follow a nutrition and fitness plan.

Although they are highly motivational and often can help clients achieve great results, holistic wellness coaches are not professional health care providers or registered dietitians. Different institutes and training centers provide certifications for holistic wellness coaching, so be sure to research your coach and read their reviews to understand more about their techniques and training.
