Eberardo did an outstanding job! We hired him to install a small retaining wall with drains and raise a low area of our backyard that was not draining properly. He understood exactly what needed to be done, and does beautiful work. I didn't realize how bad it looked until he finished with it. He is a very hard worker and takes pride in his work. He was gracious when I added changes to our original plan and provided ideas as well. I would definitely recommend Eberardo for your outdoor landscaping projects!

One relative has seen the first mowing and said it all looked fine. And the lock on the gate around the backyard was replaced and locked after the mowing, as I'd requested.

Santos was very prompt on giving an estimate and the price was outstanding. We hired him on the spot yesterday and he and his team git the job done today. We hired them to completely rehaul our front flowerbed and add a stone retaining wall around it. They were able to take out all the weeds and unwanted plants. Add more soil and mulch with new plants AND they were able to finish the stone wall as well. My wife and I are very pleased and are already thinking of more work for them in our backyard. Thank you so much Santos and your team. Amazing, amazing, amazing!

Jose and his crew installed a new drip irrigation system in my backyard. They came out to quote the project mid week, and were able to start/complete the entire project that Saturday. The quote was very reasonable. All equipment used met expectations - I went as far as to inquire another professional who is a family friend, and they noted they use the same equipment/brand, Rain Bird. Jose was friendly and answered all questions on how the system works. I will hire him again.

Mosaia and his crew did a large backyard renovation for me. This job was done in a couple phases over about a month. They did a great job. Communication was excellent throughout the entire project. His prices are very fair. Here is a list of the things they did. Built a boulder retaining wall about 4ft tall by 80ft long. It turned out great. They also tore down the old wall of railroad ties. They took care of the permit and dealing with the city. It went pretty smooth Installed a new fence and gate on top of the wall. Looks great. They dug in drainage lines to stop the erosion in my back yard. Cut out a strip of the patio and installed some new drains to stop flooding. Installed OK milsap stone around all the back yard patio Installed a stone staircase thru the wall. It looks really good They moved the irrigation lines and fixed the broken ones Installed a flagstone path leading to the stairs Installed a new concrete pad for our pool pump and filter Built two flower gardens and filed them with potting soil. Laid new sod in the whole back yard. Mosaia handled all the procurement of the needed items. Everything from stones, concrete, wood, you name it, they took care of it. I will be having him do some more work on our yard soon. Their stone work is great.

Charles did a fantastic job hauling away construction debris that contained tile and concrete. He even had to walk it around my building to put it in his truck because there was no direct access to my backyard. All this was done with a smile. He was professional, courteous, hard-working and on-time. He made sure everything was picked up and the area was clean. I couldn't have asked for anything more from Charles. He did an outstanding job! Definitely will use his services again and would recommend him to anyone that wants a job done right the first time!

Lary is very knowledgable and easy to work with. He designed a landscape plan for my yard and discussed it with me in case I wanted any changes. He broke the plan into pieces so I could budget for it. In March he built an awesome paver patio and installed some drainage. In September he installed a sprinkler system and a beautiful landscape in the backyard. His staff are hard workers and very professional.

Emerald Green Property Management was very professional from the beginning, explaining there may be a small fee added if the grass was above 1 foot. I really appreciated this, it showed me they were legit and wanted to keep our deal clear from the beginning. I don't want my time wasted, I'm sure they didn't want theirs wasted either and they respected that. They gave me a time frame and actually came and did the job a bit before said time frame and it looks amazing! I absolutely recommend them as permanent lawn care specialists, as I am having them twice a month to make my lawn beautiful. They are also very affordable!

Just bought my home and had my backyard overhauled. Jeff and I met a few times to discuss the project and plans. I'm old school, so appreciated the process. Loved his design ideas, plant and flower recommendations. The crew showed up early and completed the project on schedule. I'm very happy with the end results. Highly recommend Alterra.

Backyard pond with lots of landscape and fence repair project. Due to conflicting schedules, Bret allowed me to send him video of my backyard for the quote. This worked wonderfully as I recored, I talked him through what I wanted. Really saved time and much better than leaving work early for a consult! We then spoke and he gave me a fair quote. My yard looks amazing....and I'm very picky! He was very knowledgeable about all the different plants I had and knew how to treat them all. He also trimmed my front bushes just because it needed it. Glad I found him as I will keep his info for the next yard project. Highly recommend!!

Mike did a great job regrading our backyard and laying sod. he also "repurposed" a useless backyard drain that the previous owners had installed, extending it to the low spot in the middle of the yard as a french drain. His price was very reasonable too.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
