Gary is a great tutor. His teaching was beyond ACT as he taught my son taking an exam skills which are really important to successfully achieve great results. He understood the way my son processed the information and helped him accordingly. I would recommend him for any ACT/SAT student. Great teacher!

Best tutor we've ever had!! sandeep is the best tutor my kids have ever had. we've tried a few different tutors for my kids grades 5, 7, and 11. sandeep helps all of them excellently. he prepares each one of my kids for their classes & exams according to their needs. my 5th grade daughter was struggling in writing and math. sandeep works with her. she loves english and math now. same with my son. our 11th grader scored well in his PSAT thanks to sandeep and he is now getting ready to take his SAT. sandeep also helps him with chemistry and precalculus. he is the best fit for our kids.

Michael is nothing short of fantastic. He is an outstanding tutor: professional, patient, thorough, reliable, and of course extremely smart! I would (very) highly recommend him to anyone needing an Algebra II tutor.

Mr. Keith is a very good math instructor because he helps me easily understand difficult math topics. He has a more engaging and fun tone than other teachers that makes me want to learn math and works through the problems at our own pace. He also has methods that are simple to remember but really help us solve a problem quick and easy without and hesitation. I would very much recommend Mr. Keith as a math tutor.

My daughter always seemed to have panic attacks leading up to tests. I was desperate to find a way for her to be comfortable especially as SATs were coming up. All I can say is after a few weeks with the tutors and life coaches at Chelsea International Education, my daughter’s confidence level went up a lot. She was not only prepared to take her SATs but her core academic skills have improved tremendously, which has helped her with her AP exams. The fact that all of the Chelsea tutors are fully qualified teachers, I think makes a major difference and really sets them apart. It really is a quality service and I am very happy to recommend them to anyone.

I am a senior in high school and was taking the class AP Physics C. My teacher at school did not teach the lessons very well, so I went to Mr. Lee for tutoring and help with physics. He tutored me about an hour two times a week. When I went to Mr. Lee for tutoring he clarified, corrected, and went in more depth on the topics I learned from my teacher at school. Sometimes I would have a test the next day and just call him to have a lesson that night to review the unit.

I received tutoring for my calculus course because it was difficult for me to understand my teacher. Club Z was extremely helpful in simplifying the material and helping me to fully understand it. I've taken more advanced calculus courses successfully because of the strong foundation Club Z helped me build. Thank you Club Z!

I had my first Mandarin tutoring session today with Lotus Languages. My tutor, Sarah, did a great job in teaching me ways to pronounce and remember Chinese words. Learning with her was both challenging and fun. I especially liked that she spent time in Chengdu, were my wife is from, so I can incorporate her dialect. I look forward to our future sessions.

We were so happy to find Steve to tutor my son in Math. He was exactly what we were looking for. A person to help my son with his homework each week. He has many years of HS teaching experience and he help my son get through Geometry with an A in the class. His rate is in line with tutoring costs. Which is much less than going to these Tutoring places that require you do build your skills through their own programs vs just helping you with your homework. Those places costs thousands of dollars! We will definitely look up Steve next year when my son takes Algebra 2.

I would have never made it through GT Pre-Calculus without Ashley. I have always been a strong student with exceptional grades in Algebra and Geometry, but Pre-Cal overwhelmed me. She made the concepts make sense to me and was very patient when I asked her to re-explain things. She was an excellent tutor.

Ms. Sweat is our new summer reading tutor. Our student struggles in reading, just getting by in 4th grade with in-school tutoring. Going into 5th Grade is going to be a big change; more classes, more teachers, more books and a middle school locker in addition to sports and band! We want to make sure he is ready for the new year and starts off strong. We have met with Ms. Sweat twice so far and plan to meet twice a week over the summer. She is kind and knowledgeable and our student is working well with her.

My son has ADHD and struggles in math. The school only shows the students one way to do things and my son just wasn't getting it. He was frustrated and felt inadequate. Enter Micah. He showed my son many different ways to do things until he found one that clicked for my son. He had so much patience with my son and I could not be happier! My son now has confidence in what he is doing and is ready for what 6th grade is going to bring him this upcoming school year. I am so glad that my son feels prepared for school, and I didn't have to spend a fortune getting him tutoring! Money well spent.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

      What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

      • English
      • Science understanding and reasoning
      • Math
      • Reading
      • Writing essay (optional)

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.
