I needed an old, shallow (and split) sink removed and replaced by my new, deep, farmhouse sink! Mike’s quote was affordable and fair. He was very responsive to all of my messages and explained everything that was gonna happen before he even came over to do the job. This included him having to rework all of the plumbing underneath the sink because of the depth of the new sink. My only few complaints are small issues that wouldn’t hinder me from calling him in the future should I need a plumber again! They are as follows: He didn’t clean up the floor and underneath the sink very well; I had to vacuum and clean up myself after he left (not a big deal). The pull-down sprayer for my kitchen sink was just fine so we kept it; when it was installed with the new sink, there was significantly more difficulty pulling down and putting away the pull-down sprayer. Mike tinkered with it for more or less an hour trying to get it to move as smoothly as it had before, but eventually gave up on it. I felt bad for the guy because it was a mystery why it was acting this way. My husband ended out solving the problem and it’s a tiny, fixable issue we will tinker with this weekend. The last thing is just time; he was here for four hours and I only imagined it taking two hours, tops. All in all, he was friendly and a solid professional. Thanks Mike!

Excellent service and price. We had our whole house remodeled with new hardwood floors on the first floor and new carpet on the second floor. I did a lot of research and Carpet &flooring liquidators had the best prices. However the installation was better than the pricing! Installers were professional, on time, worked very hard and got the job done on a tight timeline. Will definitely use them again for any other flooring projects. Highly recommended!!

I had ceramic floors installed in my kitchen, office and master bathroom as well as hardwood floors installed with new baseboards everywhere else in my home. Not only were they very professional but any and all questions were quickly and promptly addressed beyond my satisfaction. When this job was completed I was amazed at how good it turned out considering how it looked while they were doing it. Robert thank you for a job well done and I give MP the highest recommendation for any job deals with floors or carpet. I definitely would recommend this company!

We had so many set backs on our journey to pick our hardwood floors that it left us very discouraged. Jose was quick to respond and spoke to me over a few weeks as we picked out floors. He totally turned around our whole experience. He even recommend where to look for floors and find the glue. Him & his team came out to our home to check square footage and started the project the very next day. We live in McKinney and Jose even went as far as going to south Dallas to the warehouse to pick up our floors for us. We did over 1,300 sq ft of glue down engineered wood floors and they completed the task very quickly & our floors look amazing. My husband & I picky about how things are done is our house so believe me when I say they defiantly know what they are doing & I believe we found the very best. Thanks for our floors!

the project consist of remodeling the backsplash in our kitchen then installing porcelain tile in Living/Kitchen, Entry, Pantry and Utility room. He was very helpful with the color scheme making sure the backsplash went well with our new granite countertop. He also came up with a wonderful design. The flooring was an expensive porcelain tile which looks like real wood floors. With my experience with construction, I knew the installation was going to be little different compared to wood floors. After discussing this with him, I knew with his experience, it would be installed correctly. We were please with the results and have received so many complements from friends and family.

Floor Coverings International installed engineered hardwood in a hallway and four bedrooms. They did an awesome job. John went above and beyond to match the existing floors that were in the living areas. He also does more than sell you flooring. He supervises the install from beginning to end and cares about every detail.

We hired Budget Floors to replace carpet in a large bedroom with hand scraped solid wood floors. They did a great job. They were professional and friendly, cleaned up the work are every day. They were always prompt to arrive and worked diligently. They were able to match the color and texture of the new floor to the rest of the floors already in the rest of the house. We were so pleased that we had them come refinish all the old floors in the house because they looked tired compared to the new one. Now the whole house looks like it has new floors. I would recommend Joseph and his crew to friends and family without reservations.

First and foremost, Rick and his team are true professionals who take extreme pride in the work they do. This is something you don't find in a lot of contractors these days. I just bought a house and I needed my wood floors screened (slightly sanded) and a new coat of polyurethane applied. I had minor scratches and scuffs throughout the house. Rick quoted me a good price so I decided to go with him. They came and did the work and the floors looked good. After a day I began to notice certain areas of the floor flaking. I immediately notified Rick of the problem. After inspecting the floor it was determined the floors had originally been done with a water based poly. Rick's team went over it with an oil based one, so the poly never adhered to the floor. Without making any excuses and without hesitation, Rick told me they will go through the house and correct the issue. I have a 3200 sq house and 90% of it has wood floors. They came back, re-sanded the floors and applied a new coat of polyurethane. For some unknown reason, that second application did not take either. I was pretty irritated because of having to be displaced yet again and the issue still went unresolved. I have dealt with situations like this in the past and this is typically where most contractors start making excuses or putting the blame elsewhere. This is also the time they typically see the ugly side of my personalty. Before any of that could happen, Rick explained that he did not understand why we were having these issues but he was determined to make things right. He said they would have to come in and start from scratch. This involved sanding the floors down to the bare wood, re staining and reapplying a new coat of polyurethane. I was not happy knowing I would have to be out of my house for several more days. The upside would be the floors looking brand new. I also realize things sometimes don't go as expected. The fact that Rick was determined to correct the issue no matter the loss he would incur, showed true integrity and pride in his work. I have the utmost respect for that. I was annoyed at having to be displaced yet again, but ultimately I just wanted the job done correctly. After it was all said and done, the floors look amazing! I waited to write this review ensuring there would be no further issues. At the end of the day this was a win-win. I for all intense and purposes, got brand new floors because Ricks team took out every scratch, ding and imperfections that remained. Rick has a customer for life and a strong spokesman for the amazing work his guys do. So I will say, if you need work done on your wood floors, look no further than Venetian Hardwood Floors!! Not only do they do excellent work, they do it at a really fair price. They have an extreme level of pride in the work they do and above all...an extreme level of integrity.

Sergio was great! I messaged him at 9pm and he messaged right back and we scheduled for the next morning. He texted me when he was close and arrived on time. They laid runners to walk back and forth. Taped up everything very well. Had a blanket mat to lay tools on. He even gave my wife pointers how to get wood floor glue off the floors that the builders left. A+ experience and workmanship all the way and I’m picky.

This was our first experience with hiring someone through Thumbtack and we were a bit apprehensive. And, admittedly, things didn’t get off to a smooth start. Luis came to the house to get the scope of the job and bid it. We walked him through everything we wanted and the original online bid doubled. That is why we understand that online bids are all but useless. Until a contractor sees the job, they should not bid it! We were told that it was a two day job, but when the worker arrived (Luis didn’t show up) he tried to cram it all in to one day. That made us more nervous, but as he got rolling, he realized that it would take two days as Luis had said. Then, after the worker was done for the first day, we walked the job. There was paint spill on the hardwood floors and one of the patch jobs looked like someone stuck bubble gum on the wall and painted over it. There was also a divot in one of the walls caused by a drawer shutting on it and pulling out the paint when it was opened. Later, Luis admitted that he had done that when he checked the work. I would have thought he’d have fixed it. We let Luis know of these things that needed fixing and he agreed that on day two, they’d be handled. When the workers came back on day two, they were a little late. But they showed up on a Sunday as promised so they get extra credit for that. Day 2 required repairs to door hinges that another contractor had “fixed” and the “fixed” again. But the guys from Tyler’s did it right. They pulled the door frame apart, reinforced the wood, and reassembled the whole thing. By the end of the work the door swings like it was new and you’d never know that it had been repaired. It looked great. After the guys left I found myself cleaning up a little paint and some door handles and a counter top. It sounds like there were problems, but the reality is that, as someone who hires contractors for a living, there’s no perfect contractor. There’s always a “punch list” of things that need to be fixed or finished. I’m handy enough to do some of the final cleanup on my own and it’s easier to do it than to schedule the contractor to come back. I give these guys Four Stars because the work has all been done very well. The workers didn’t hesitate to do what needed to be done. They aren’t lazy like others I have seen and there was no argument about touching things up. I don’t get hung up on the original online bid being lower than the final bid, because I didn’t supply photos or dimensions when I submitted my request for bids. We will be calling these guys again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
