Decided to not have the event catered due to income concerns. But customer service was awesome and the price was a "deal"!!! When I have an event in the near future, this catering company will be top choice.

Luke did a great job catering a sit-down dinner for my daughter's bachelorette weekend. He responded to my initial inquiry promptly and was easy to communicate with via e-mail and text as we planned the menu. The girls wanted to float around the pool and enjoy a few adult beverages during the day, but wanted a restaurant-quality meal that evening without having to worry about dressing up or driving. Luke arrived promptly and served a great meal with a choice of lamb chops or filet mignon as the primary proteins. The meal included a sushi appetizer, salads & sides, and a yummy dessert of creme brulee. He cooked, cleaned, and rolled with the punches with this rowdy group of 8 ladies and they all had a great time and enjoyed the meal. We will definitely hire Luke again for other dinner parties at the house.

My then fiancé and I were looking for different vendors for catering and we knew we wanted something different. We wanted our guests to have more of an experience at the reception since our theme was quite unique. When we met with Cassy, she had A LOT of options and her food was beyond delicious! She was very nice, helpful and tended to our guests with superior customer service. She went above and beyond to make our reception extra special - as I mentioned earlier, our theme was unique so we asked if she could make "Butterbeer" from our favorite film, Harry Potter. Without any hesitation, she said "Absolutely! My kids LOVE Harry Potter!" All of our guests LOVED her food, sweet peach tea and of course the Butterbeer was amazing!! I would recommend her services to everyone and anyone. If you're looking for a caterer who will exceed your expectations and is professional in every aspect, Chef Cassy is your caterer! Thank you Cassy for making our reception an unforgettable experience!!

The review that was written on 7/13/14 by whomever, listen to how business should have been properly conducted on your end. I had a similar situation with SRD, unable to afford the deposit fee until after the 1st of the month, I met with Cindy on around the 16th or 17th. I explained that I only got paid twice a month and all my last check went to bills, however before leaving the consultation I KNEW that SRD was who I wanted at my wedding. I signed the contract, and even though I left without a copy, I still felt awesome about the experience. I stayed in contact with Cindy via email ever 2 or so weeks until I finally made my deposit and she came out to see my venue. If they do not have a signed contract from you and they do not hear from you in a certain amount of time, you can not point the finger and blame them for your horrible experience in wedding planning. Think about how many couple they meet with who say they will call and never do because they hired someone else. They are looking out for the better of their business, just like any other business owner would do. Please don't write reviews while emotional, it is always best to write a review 24 hours after the matter. I wish you the best of luck with your future wedding plans and I hope everything turns out Fabulous for you. P.S. Cindy is absolutely a dream to work with, cant wait for my Big Day!!

On behalf of Housing staff at Texas Woman's University, we were absolutely pleased with the service he provided to our students. For our event, we needed a chef to help demonstrate a few meals that were healthy, easy, and affordable enough for students to go out and try. Chef Jared P. Morris came up with the perfect menu to demonstrate to the students. The samples he gave of each demo was absolutely delicious! The students enjoyed his personality and was quite knowledgeable about culinary arts and nutrition. Thanks to him the event went by smoothly and successfully.

WOW is the word that pretty much sums up our experience with Urban Taste! I am with Pensacola International Airport and we had the honor of hosting a Deck Night Party at Southwest HQ in Dallas, TX. Not being from Dallas and only having one months notice - I had no clue on catering companies and their performance. I reached out to Urban Taste Catering and Tiffany was so easy and pleasant to work with! She was able to customize the menu to fit our Gulf Coast hometown cuisine and also coordinated all of the amazing decorations and props for us! The success of our event wouldn't have been possible without Tiffany and her wonderful team and I highly recommend Urban Taste Catering to anyone in, or near, the Dallas area!

Tony was absolutely amazing from the very beginning, since the first message I received from him he showed him his professionalism, patience and his true passion for his catering business. He always responded to every single question I had with a smile, and I had A LOT. He always reassured me that he was going to make my wedding day a special day, and he did, even with some obstacles due to having a small kitchen at the venue I picked, and having very little time to setup, he made everything worked to perfection, the food was delicious, he made sure me and my husband got something to eat at our wedding! I was full just after eating the appetizers since they were of very generous size. His staff was incredible too. He truly seemed thankful for giving him the opportunity of being part of our wedding, but I'm the one that's thankful for having found Tony. You definitely get your money worth, and compared to what others caterers want to charge and for less food, you will get more than what you are paying for. I foresee and wish much success in the future for Tony's business.

I've known Carolyn for many years, and in the past two years, have been lucky to taste her delicious and skilled cuisine. Among my favorites were the pistachio encrusted salmon and the tapenade appetizer. But I've also enjoyed her fabulous Caesar salad and flourless chocolate cake. Carolyn knows how to build a well rounded and coordinated menu that is both delicious and inviting. Carolyn is knowledgeable of health conscious food choices, has a broad repertoire of vegetarian specialities, and is very accommodating to picky palates. She's also quite sensitive to those who wish to avoid starchy white foods and knows appropriate alternatives. I hope to continue to enjoy Carolyn's mouth watering creations and would recommend her chef skills to anyone who loves to eat.

Highly recommended! They provided my wife and I with everything I needed for my event for 800 people. They also gave me a really great deal and were very flexible with my budget. On thumbtack I went through many catering companies and all of them were either overpriced or the food quality was below average. In addition I loved how they provided me a beverage bar with Hibiscus based drinks and organic lemonades. I especially loved their Lavender Cheesy Bread and Cherry Lime Hibiscus. Servers and Owners were prompt and the bartending service specialized in specialty cocktails that were smoked or traditional. Either way Spiced Lavender Catering is very professional and very fast to respond on any questions that I had. Also they are great for casual or high end venues that include weddings and corporate events. I cant thank them enough for saving me alot of stress at the last moment and they exceeded my expectation in everything from food to the exceptional service. Again I also cant thank them enough for being flexible with my timing and budget. Thanks Chef Nina.

Cari was a dream to work with.  I had a goal to feed my family healthy food with possible lunch leftovers.  She did a fabulous job that went above and beyond my family's expectations.  Eating all the pregnancy super foods and my stepsons picky palette were some obstacles that Cari accommodated for us along the way.  There was so much ease in mealtime prep with her clear step by step instructions.  My family was so excited about sharing in the preparations of her dinners they even called me to schedule when to start the oven, something that has never done for me.  To sum it up her services brought us together for quality family time and made life stress free.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
