I could not be any happier with the outcome of my new floors! They gave me a very competitive price compared with the others as well as a longer warranty. The started when they said they would and finished on time and with the price they quoted me. There were no extra or hidden charges. Also, they would have been finished earlier but I threw in an extra room and even then they finished when they said they would. They installed ceramic tile in over 900 sq. ft. of an old home. The floor was not perfect underneath but they left it looking like it was on top. I would definitely hire them again! Very professional.

We needed to update our spare bathroom by removing the linoleum flooring, retiling our countertop, and setting tile in the shower. Roberto is a hard worker and commits himself to the project at hand until it is completed. His prices are more than reasonable and competitive, they are a bargain without any needed coupons! When he was done, our spare bathroom was better than we had imagined it be! We couldn't be happier. We highly recommend Roberto for any and all work needed on house improvements.

Tony re-tiled an area around the bathroom window that was old and moldy--looks like new. He is an excellent tiler and charges a fair price. I am using him on a regular basis for repairs on my rental properties.

When I decided to remodel my bathroom, I had no idea I would be so overwhelmed by the process. Sherry Franzoy, from Decorating Den Interiors, helped me turn what had become a confusing mess into a fun, exciting experience. During the consultation we discussed likes, dislikes, cost, color, style, etc. She brought sample choices of tiles, and bathroom fixtures, and helped turn my vision into a reality. I would definitely call on Sherry again for any decorating and remodeling projects.

Newsky El Paso (El Paso, TX) did the remodel work on 2 of our bathrooms to our complete satisfaction. Larry, the owner, uses his own employees, who along with him, have all the requisite craftsmanship/building skills to complete the jobs. When they ran into unexpected difficulties, Larry relied on his decades of experience to recommend resolutions and has the skills to implement the fix. You will need to make all your own purchases of major items: toilets, tubs, cabinets, tops, faucets, paint, tile, etc., He supplies the ancillary stuff needed to complete the install which is built into his estimate. Make sure you get all the installation instructions, warranty papers, operating manuals, extra parts, etc. His guys are really good about getting rid of trash, but you need to let Larry know what you want to keep or out it goes. Let him know you want quality painting - no short cuts like leaving switch plates on the walls or hinges on doors and painting around them. He'll ensure the painter complies.

MAJO repaired and refinished my kitchen walls before painting them, and they also removed the old floor tiles and laid a new floor of vinyl tiles for me. The workers kept to their schedule and did a great job. The walls and floor look brand new. It was easy to get ahold of Alan before, while, and after the work was done. I have also used their services to repair a bedroom door jamb and hang a door for me there. I'll be installing kitchen cabinets soon, and I'll be contacting MAJO to do that job for me, too. MAJO is very professional with a personal touch.

Ray Martinez was contracted to perform a major renovation of our home in Amarillo, Texas. The1,652 sq. ft., 3 bedroom, 2 bath home had been rented out for 10 years and required both structural and cosmetic renovation. Ray went through the home with us and provided a labor only bid, with us supplying materials and plumbing and electrical sub-contractors. The project was estimated at 12 weeks, with a weekly draw on labor paid each week. The project was completed in 16 weeks, which was an acceptable variance due to travel between El Paso, TX and Amarillo, TX and 2 weeks requested by Ray for personal reasons. The scope of work was adhered to and daily communication addressing changes and unforeseen complications kept a good working relationship. Ray and his team worked well with other trades on this project, and on several occasions the sub-contractors complimented Ray's work ethic and professionalism. This project included creating an open floor plan in the living and dining room by removing walls and installing new header beam, new tile backsplash and cabinet refinishing in the kitchen, installation of new kitchen appliances, master bath rebuild with stone shower and fixtures, guest bath rebuild with stone tub enclosure and fixtures, installation of new door molding throughout, installation of 6 new interior doors, 2 sliding glass closet doors, and 2 exterior doors. All walls and ceilings were repaired and painted. All doors and millwork were painted. Ceiling fans and light fixtures were installed in all rooms. The exterior eaves, soffit, fascia were all painted. Built out and painted a ceiling for a 30' x 15' covered patio. Ray respected our home like it was his. His work area was cleaned every evening and in many cases was cleaner than I could have kept it. There was some minor painting overspray that had to be cleaned up for a few weeks, but nothing I couldn't live with. I always trusted that if Ray said it would get done, it would. I would have no hesitation in having Ray work in my home. In fact, there are some projects that we could not finish on this contract that I will have Ray do for us.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

    • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
      • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
    • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
    • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
