Jason arrived on time and was very professional. He fixed a problem that two other technicians prior had no idea about. He made sure that he did track mud into my home. He will be the only call that I make in the future for heating and cooling issues.

Our AC unit quit blowing cool air (6/24/17), so I immediately turned it off. After a quick search on Thumbtack, I messaged A&M to examine our air conditioner. Shawn quickly returned my message online and I called to ask him when he'd be available. He said he wasn't too far away and would be at my home in about 45 minutes. He arrived within 30 minutes! What a blessing after 5pm on a Friday afternoon. Whew! Other companies were booked until the following Tuesday-yikes! I will say that Shawn is very personable, prompt, and thorough. Was kind to explain everything and diagnose issues with our unit. He made some adjustments with our pressure, checked the freon, etc. and showed us how to maintain the unit for future care and longevity. Also, he gave a great recommendation for what to purchase for our next install. Couldn't have asked for a better person to assist us in our time of need. The summer just started and he was an angel. He was able to get us back into a cool home before the weekend without us sitting in a swamp. Pretty good value too, as he charges $25 to diagnose and apply that fee to any additional charges if you have him make the repairs. If you're looking for a knowledgable technician with lots of experience, call A&M right away!

David (8:22) was prompt, courteous and reliable. The best thing about this particular job was, on Saturday about 5:00 pm, he was ready to make the service call. However, we were not going to be home until late Saturday night, so he offered to come at 7:00am Sunday morning! He arrived at 7:00 and immediately diagnosed the problem. A very reasonable $65 diagnostic fee. As an extra bonus, the part he replaced is likely under warranty, so he called to let me know he would probably be refunding some or all of the charge for the part. Please give David a call if you need any HVAC work. You won't be sorry.

I had put in a bid for two new ac units in my house. I was flooded with bids from this site, and another site. Mondragon Mechanical was one of the bidders. They were not the lowest, but they were not the most expensive neither. Jorge came to my house, and met with my wife and me. We told him what we wanted, and he made some suggestions. Jorge said he could get it in one day, perfect! We liked the way Jorge explained everything to use. He simplified it for us to understand better on the features and energy efficiency, and how it would save us money. Jorge sounds like a man that knows his s@*t, and he does. He was very professional and respectful, of our home. He gave me a price after coming to inspect the project. We decided to choose his company to do the job. I called Jorge to let him know, that we wanted to hire him, and if he can be at my house the next day at seven am. He said yes, and arrived on time with his crew. They starting ripping out the old ac equipment, and installing the new ac. It was a bit larger, but the technicians were able to make it fit, without damaging anything. Jorge's crew were very respectful to us, and were very neat. It took a whole day to complete, but that is fine. We want the job done right, and it came out right. Jorge was onsite, made sure to check work, and made sure it was working. His technicians did an excellent job, and we are happy with our new AC. I would recommend Mondragon Mechanical to anyone that needs AC service or installation. I will also continue using them as our permanent AC service company for a long time to come.

I hired Kleen Air for routine maintenance. The technician was very knowledgeable. In addition to the maintenance, he recommended a replacement part due to the heavy use that I subject my A/C unit to. I followed his advice to prevent potential damage to the unit should the part fail. I also purchased a maintenance plan at half the cost of my previous provider.

They replaced a dryer vent line that was installed improperly. They used high quality materials and the technician was very experienced and completed the job in a couple hours. The cost was $686.00, which was a lot more than I was expecting, but it did involve installing a new roof vent.

Mr. Cobb came out on a Saturday and diagnosed the problem quickly. Had to chase the parts down but I don’t expect a technician to have every part on his truck ( which was very clean and organized) I would not hesitate to recommend this company.

Julio initially got the job because he was very knowledgeable, asked the right questions, and proposed "fixing" our A/C rather than replacing it. Another HVAC service recommended replacing it for the cost of 6K-11K, even though our system was relatively new. Julio diagnosed the problem differently and correctly, fixed the leak, and now our AC works perfectly. He saved us big time. He's also courteous and punctual and can think "out of the box" to save you from paying for another box.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.
