The movers were about 30 minutes late, not a big deal. They were quick, very professional, and careful with our items! I'd use them again if I need to!!

The move went well overall although the movers were 45 minutes late arriving, I'm assuming because they came from another part of town. They handled my furniture with great care and set everything up.

We have hired Elite movers twice in the last year. Although I don't plan on moving again any time soon, if I did, I would certainly call them again. I was beyond pleased with Thomas and Elite movers. The crew is amazing---efficient would be putting it mildly. They completed our last move in 4 hours, start to finish and that included unloading a storage unit. Each crew member is so nice....it rained during our last move and they showed extreme care with both our belongings and our home. I am so grateful for Thomas, Chris, and the rest of Elite movers. Thank you so much for all your help.

I love these guys and glad that I went through them as my first time with movers. They loaded and unloaded quickly. They were really cool guys, nice to talk to. One of the movers had told me they were working since 7am (it was about 4:30pm) and they made sure to be thorough in helping me into my new place. They took care of me and I'm so grateful!

They showed up ahead of the scheduled time at my request, at the last minute notice. The guys that loaded my truck were very careful with all of my belongings & did an amazingly fast job of figuring out the best way to load the truck. They did a loading job that would take most movers an hour & a half to 2 hours, in just under an hour. I told them about my 1300 mile drive to my destination & they loaded my uhaul to where not only will nothing shift on me, but also distributed the weight to give me as smooth of a ride as possible for that long drive. Very highly recommended. My only complaint is that I wish they were in south Florida so I could also have them unload & arrange the furniture for me lol. Great job guys, awesome & easy company to work with. Hire them & trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Our movers were excellent! Due to a clerical error, only 2 men were assigned to a three-man job, and with a smaller truck than I originally asked for. Can’t really blame the movers for an office error! The two movers who came did the job with a great attitude and worked very very hard to get the job done as quickly as they could. I’d give those two guys 10 stars if I could! We were very impressed. (The office should probably get it together though, lol.)

This was going to originally be a one-star rating. I scheduled the movers between 8-9 am. The driver called me at 9:30 and said he was 20-25 minutes out. At 11, the movers were still not at our apartment and I called them and their hub, but got no answer. at 11:30, they called and said they had to finish up another job and I should have received a call from dispatch, but she must have forgotten to call us. They eventually got to our place at around noon. So, despite the three hour delay, the movers hauled butt and got everything completed in three hours and apologized profusely for the earlier miscommunication. We moved from a two story, two-bedroom town home to an upper-story three bedroom apartment. The two movers were quick, hard-working, professional and respectful. I would be willing to hire them again and hope that the delayed arrival time/miscommunication thing was a one-time only affair.

I found a great new career that needed me to relocate from Dallas, TX to Los Angeles, CA. I was doing some research online and came across Dallas Moving. I gave them a call and they explained everything to me in perfect detail. I have never moved across the country before, so I was apprehensive about this whole ordeal, but I knew I was in good hands with them. I knew I made the right choice by booking with them. On move day, the movers showed up on time. They were very professional and packed my things nice and neatly. I was very impressed! As I settled into my new Los Angeles lifestyle; I sent for my things to be delivered to me. Afterwards my things were sent to my new place. Nothing was broken and the movers even helped me rearrange everything. I’m so happy with the work that they did!

The Bellhops arrived 15 minutes early and finished 30 minutes ahead of schedule. They worked hard and quickly and were careful not to damage anything. They were polite and asked questions along the way to ensure that they moved things they way we wanted them to. The booking process is very easy and you get a profile of the movers a couple days before your move. It's also easy to email them with any questions. I would highly recommend them and use them again.

The movers were about 20 minutes late from a project before lasting a little longer, but once they arrived they were extremely efficient and worked very quickly and carefully to stay on time. I had stairs and that didn't affect them at all. I would definitely use them again and highly recommend!

It was a pretty easy job, and they were already working on a project across the street. I asked them to remove a mattress and a trash can full of old paint buckets, both of which I had pulled out to the curb before they arrived. Super nice people, and it took them about 5 minutes. The only thing that wasn’t very professional... the guy asked for $100.00 when his price on thumbtack was $80.00. Most of us pick people by price and by reviews. If anything, I thought the guy would say “hey, this took us less than 10 minutes and we were already in your area. Let’s knock it down to $60.00.” Needless to say, I paid what was quoted to me.

I was very pleased with my decision to hire big Tex. Andy was very helpful and upfront with his prices and the movers showed up on time and ready to work. The two man team was positive from start to finish and even very patient and helpful on rearranging the furniture after. Made a usually stressful time for me easy.

They were my first movers ever and I had a fantastic experience. From the first call with Charlie at their office to thanking them after moving, could not have asked for a better experience. Everything was so systematic and orderly. CJ and Dustin who moved our stuff were super nice, courteous, quick and careful with handling all the stuff. I would highly recommend them and look forward to working with them in the future. Thank you so much you guys!

Great experience from start to finish. Unfortunately had to call at the last second because shipping pod was delivered late. Called first thing in the morning and the movers were there within 2 hours. They worked fast and efficiently to get all of items in my apartment in enough time for me to be productive for the rest of the day. Would definitely recommend and use again if needed to. Thanks Gents!!

One of the BEST I have ever used. I needed a last minute Move-Out cleaning and they were prompt to respond with a great quote. Communication was great and arrived on time. Very friendly and professional. It's rare to have cleaners who actually care about the quality of their work and they do. It truly is a family cleaning service which is nice too. Thank you Mark!

My review was going to be much different than the one I am posting now. This was a last minute move needed, and Samuel responded with super professionalism. The mover was not very professional (they arrived over an hour late), and it required me to reach out to Samuel as some of my antiques were completely destroyed thanks to the mover mishanding labeled fragile boxes. Samuel personally came to my home and assessed the damages, and ensured that we were satisfied with the outcome. The sentimental value of the items were important to me, and Samuel took this into consideration as well. Thank you for considering your customers first! I look forward to the replacement.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
