Lauren was excellent! She covered everything from potty training to obedience and made sure we understood the why’s behind it. She had my pup sitting and listening in the first 2 minutes. We signed him up for 5 additional classes. I can’t wait to work with Lauren while I continue to grow and bond with my Chihuahua!

I brought my dog to K9 Kountry for obedience training, agility training and protection training. Butch took the time to understand my expectations and desired outcomes for the 3 types of training requested. He tailored a training program based upon the breed, age and an assessment of the communication/respect between me and my dog. I have been very impressed with the results and continued my training with Butch and his team to bring my dog to levels I did not think were possible. The discipline and obedience the dog displays are amazing...all while still being a great pet and protector. It isn't often you find somebody with the experience, PATIENCE and knowledge to understand you and your dog and how best to get the 2 of you to interact. My dog absolutely loves going to training and acts like a kid on Christmas morning when we pull into K9 Kountry

Mr. Mouton was hired to train our 4 month old puppy (and us) on basics. Our puppy had not yet demonstrated any "bad behaviors" but we definitely wanted him to start out with a firm foundation of leash walking and obedience. Maury took him in for 2 weeks and delivered a calm and obedient dog to us at the conclusion.

My dog Abby Grace recently had a spa day with Debi. Although Abby is very active and stubborn, Debi made the grooming and bathing look so easy with no problems. Debi truly loves our four-legged friends and they react mutually. I will definitely use her services again. She has also done some obedience training for me and Abbr with good results

We've only had a couple of sessions with Stephanie and our two French Bulldogs but we already know she was a great choice for our dog training needs. First of all - she loves what she does and it shows in her work. Stephanie is also very responsive to the behaviors that we want to change in our dogs, and is able to make the training fun. Additionally, my wife and I have busy schedules, and Stephanie is very flexible to finding training times that work for us. I highly recommend Stephanie to anyone considering training for their dogs.

Nancy has been such a life saver for my husband and I! She has only been working with our puppy, Remi for a month now, and I can already see such a huge difference in her behavior, manners, and obedience. The part I love most is that she meets at your home. Meeting at our house enables us to use her methods and trainings in the area our dog is the most, at home! I have been able to watch the way she trains and directs my dog and mimic that, and it has changed so much for the better! The counter surfing has decreased drastically, her basic obedience skills are close to perfect, and we are still working towards other behavior goals such as jumping. Nancy is so sweet and caring to us and our dog. She gives out her personal number to you in case of emergency, any needs, or questions you might have. I would highly recommend her to any friends I have looking for someone to help with your dogs behaviors! Thanks Nancy!

She explained different ways to use the treats as rewards. We talked about bought food vs homemade food. Gave directions for training to follow several commands. She followed up with emails covering things we didn't have time to discuss.

I initially chose Zoom Room to enroll my 8 week old puppy into puppy preschool for socialization and basic obedience. This was the best decision! Heather is great and my puppy just passed his AKC S.T.A.R. puppy test! He will now be moving on to puppy obedience and we will definitely keep coming back here! There is outstanding agility equipment here and my puppy loves learning the agility course mixed in with his obedience training! A great way to keep them engaged and learning and also super fun for the owners too! I highly recommend coming to Zoom Room for your dog/puppy training needs! We will keep coming!

After shopping around looking at different dog trainers, I'm SO happy I went with Pamela! Over the course of the few weeks, she taught me so much about how my body language and tone of voice communicate different things to my dog and how to use that to teach him obedience and manners. Not only did my dog master the commands, I learned how to be in control and take leadership of walks and day to day life. Pamela offered great advice and insight when I needed it and I would highly recommend her to anyone! Thank you!

Tena called me in a short amount of time, and was very friendly. My particular problem falls far outside the normal purview of any dog training, as such she had not encountered this before. She was very eager to brainstorm with me over the phone giving me several ideas on how we might rectify my situation. We spoke for about twenty minutes, and concluded with her asking me to keep her updated on the progress. She seemed genuinely caring for me and my dogs, even though she hasn’t met either of us. She was happy to help, and didn’t say she needed to come and give an in home consultation, that would have cost money, which I thought was extremely generous of her. Thank you again Tena! Adam.

I appreciate Brian's approach to dog training. He establishes a relationship with the dog to create a desire within the dog to want to please him. I also believe that takes time. Every other trainer I talked to only wanted the dog for two weeks, which in my opinion is not enough time to really teach a dog obedience. I have been visiting Brian and Harry once a week and I'm very pleased with Harry's progress. I'm also learning how to reinforce the training once Harry comes back home. Brian has been a pleasure to work with and a very competent trainer.

Elizabeth is such a blessing; I cannot say enough great things about her. I recently adopted a puppy, as a first time dog owner, and made the BEST decision to work with her every step of the way. She helped me since before I even adopted my puppy - she helped me find the best puppy for me and prepare my house to bring her home. After our first obedience training session, the puppy had already learned (among other things) how to sit!!! She is helping me socialize the puppy with my cats who have never been around dogs, and has taught me so much about understanding my cats behavior and body language that I had no idea about. Elizabeth is always available to answer any questions I have and is always willing to help. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone and everyone!!

Beth was called to our house to help us with our rescue pit bull. She is a people person but most importantly she is knowledgeable trainer. Her philosophy on training meshed well with my family. She does not implemented dominance strategies which is unlike some other trainors here in the area. We want a family pet not an animal that fears us. I feel confident that with her helpful tips and training we will have the dog of our dreams. Our dog was abused prior to us having him. Already I see a significant improvement. I would strongly recommend her to anyone that has doggy behavior issues.

Sooz"The Leader Of The Pack" gave me some wonderful ideals for dealing with my pet being so unsociable. Sooz came to my apartment home where my community has a pet park. The training session was a little over an hour which i felt was worth alot more than her fee. My Pug and I highly recommend Sooz "Leader Of The Pack" for you and your love ones (family pets). Great class. The trainer is very patient with the dogs and their owners and you can tell that she loves dogs. She gives you homework to do with your dog for the next class and if you follow her directions, you’ll see the progress with your dog. The trainer provider great info on dog behavior.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
