Luke prepared a special 5 course holiday dinner for my family of 10. Not only was the food superb, but the whole experience from his arrival at our home until he left was awesome. He was very laid back, but also professional and confident. He was so friendly with my family and impressed us with his skill and presentation. We are already scheduling Luke to come back!

I recently held a retirement party for my husband and myself and hired Meat and Greet for the event. What I wanted was a casual meal and one where I didn't have to do anything but mingle with my guests. Meat and Greet came through for me. All of my guests were quizzing me about the caterers and where I found them. The food was absolutely delicious and even though I didn't get to eat right away, too busy socializing, by the time I got a plate, everything was still hot. The servers were polite and friendly to my guests, it was a wonderful experience. I would recommend this company to anyone.

The low price (in comparison with other caterers) was what drew us to Jared Pierre Catering. Overall, we were pleased. During the tasting and initial discussion of the menu/event, Jared was very accommodating with our requests and was willing to make suggestions and adjust from the sample menu he sent. Communication from that point on was fairly easy. He replied within a professional time frame, but it often took a couple emails in order to get my question answered. An emergency came up the week before the wedding, resulting in Jared finding a replacement for the event. Because of this, things seemed to have gotten lost in translation and our menu items/quality was not exactly what we ordered. Nonetheless, guests still enjoyed it: One even said "this was the best food I've ever had at a wedding."

I hired Chef's Like it Hot to cater our employee Thanksgiving Luncheon on November 12, 2015. Chef Tony did an excellent job! The menu was a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Chef Tony came to our offices a week before the event to allow us to taste the suggested meal. Chef Tony even added a few extra items just to give us a sample of what else he could do for us. We had about 10 people taste the meal to ensure we had a fair representation of the employee base. The tasting was our opportunity to provide feedback to Chef Tony. The committee really enjoyed the meal and decided that day to use him for the event. The day of the luncheon, Chef Tony and his team arrived early to get set up. The team was professionally dressed and provided excellent service with a smile. Chef Tony and his crew served approximately 200 individuals in 30 minutes with ease. There was plenty of food. Employees had the opportunity to go back for seconds. And in true Chef Tony fashion, he added a special dessert to the menu on top of the homemade peach cobbler and apple pie that was on the menu. From the moment, I contacted Chef Tony he communicated with me daily to make sure that no detail was overlooked. What I especially appreciated was that Chef Tony took our committee's feedback to heart and made adjustments to ensure everyone was pleased with the meal. I've heard nothing but positive comments from the employees about the food served at the luncheon. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to use Chef Tony and I would highly recommend him for any event large or small.

Nina was very professional, responsive and made me feel comfortable with my purchase from start to finish. I’ve interacted with other caterers and none compare to Spiced Lavender. Their staff showed up at the agreed time to make sure everything was set up before my guests were to arrive. The food was soooooo delicious we were afraid we would run out. But we never did!!!! Overall, Spiced Lavender was very professional, punctual, and customer service oriented with delicious food that made my event go smooth and kept my guests happy.

Cari and the food were great. We hosted a special-occasion dinner party for 14. Cari brought 2 helpers, both of whom were professional and fun. We did 3 appetizers, salad, a pasta and meat main course, and cake. Cari was proactive in setting the menu, everything came off on time, guests loved the food and they cleaned up while we ate. I recommend Cari without reservation!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
