Leslie was a joy to work with. This was the first time I've had to set up an event with a catering service and she was a tremendous help in guiding me through the process. Everything was set up on time, the food was delicious, and my group was very appreciative of the service provided. Thank you, Leslie, for a job well done. I definitely recommend Fabulous Affairs for your event planning/catering needs.

I host seminars on a regular basis, and the meals ordered from stores and restaurants are getting tasteless overtime. I found Karen on the internet and saw her background that drew my attention immediately. I decided to give her a try and see how it will work for my event. The results turned out fantastic! She showed up right on schedule, professionally dressed with the food I'd ordered. I was able to tell that it was the food I've been looking for just by the smell of them! The unfinished dishes were all boxed up and bottomed up which had never happened before in my seminars. I highly recommend Karen catering your meal if you are sick and tired of the food from stores in the market. Actually, I am hiring her again to cater my next seminar!

Having just moved to Austin and unfamiliar with a local catering team I turned to Thumbtack to review resources in the area. I was immediately contacted by Laura from Bittersweet Cakes and Catering with a fabulous menu and quote. She was wonderful to work with through the entire process. The food was delicious (I'd actually love a few of her recipes because a month later I still reminisce about the stuffed Figs!). I was entertaining 25 executives at my home and wanted a perfect turn key night and it was that plus more. I would highly recommend Laura for any event and will look forward to working with her again in the future.

Crepe Class - What a gracious and knowledgeable host and instructor Katya is! Her home kitchen was perfect spatially for our class of six and in just observing, is a lesson for the home cook on pantry organization, storage and stocking. Katja obviously is passionate and knowledgeable about food. She clearly described the ingredients and cooking methods for us to be successful in making our crepes. As a professional, Katya taught us the science of why and how the recipe works rather than just dumping, stirring and talking. And, after a failure, set a standard by saying "No, not good. Let's start over." and then taught us the fix. I appreciate that! The only criticism I have is the time involved in the class. We were an interested group that asked questions and wanted to participate, so the class took quite a bit longer. That was fine for me, but we did got a little hungry waiting to eat till the cooking was done. But, Katya did note the passage of time, made us aware, and modified the class. Yummm! I'd love to have a class with Katya again!

Katie just catered a meal for 22 girls for a Bachelorette Party at the house we rented over the weekend. From the very beginning, Katie was extremely helpful, responsive and gave us many different menus and options to choose from. She had great communication and not the mention her food is amazing! Everything tasted fantastic and all the girls raved about the food even days later. Katie was extremely professional, dinner was served exactly on time and they cleaned up everything so nicely. If I lived in Austin I would definitely use her as much as I could for any future private catering events. Thanks so much for helping create a wonderful night for us!

V and her team are incredible! Catering is one of the most expensive parts of a wedding, but she gave us a great deal for the value of food and quantity of people. I was so worried about not having enough food, V assured me that this would not be one of those weddings! She was right. We had so much food leftover that my family is probably still eating off of, lol. The crab-stuffed mushroom caps (that I unfortunately didn’t get to try) were a hit! As well as the macaroni 😍 Choose V! She won’t disappoint.

Chef Heath provided tea sandwiches and some hors d'oevres for an adult birthday party. He delivered the food on time and helped arrange it for the party. The spinach and goat cheese tartlets weren't successful; the pastry got soggy. Otherwise the food was good, and the service was great.

Urban Cowboy provided a nice variety of appetizers and then tacos we chose through a previous food tasting (served from the food truck!). We chose for the tacos: smoked chicken, BBQ brisket, fried avocado, Siracha shrimp. Plus we had two sides, kale salad and roasted root vegetables. They even offered quesadillas for the kids. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. Our guests loved it!!! We cannot say thank you enough. Chris & his crew made our night and they were very professional and easy to work with.

I have enjoyed working with Paola at the restaurant for the last 8 months. She has created an awesome work environment, and she really cares about her people. I guess that's why she has some many tenured people in the high turn over service industry.

The best custom catered culinary experience you can find in Austin hands down. This is from someone who works weddings every week and has tried almost every caterer in the Central Texas area. A unique and non-traditional experience for Texans looking for great alternate catering options.

Chef Hannah catered my 50th Birthday Brunch Party in February, & it couldn't have been any better! The Baked Hashbrown Egg Nests were a HUGE hit! We had the most delicious Mimosas with Fresh squeezed Orange juice, & I can't stop thinking about the Sweet Potato Chorizo Fritatta & those Breakfast Sausage Cinnamon Rolls with yummy Maple icing!! She had her own, fun twist on classic dishes that made everything such a huge hit. Everyone had a blast, & she was so friendly & warm to all of us. I will definitely have her cater my next party. She cooks with love & you can taste it in her food.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

    • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
    • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
    • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
    • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
    • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
