I can't say enough positive things about my dog's grooming experience with Brooke of My BFF Grooming. Her friendly disposition and gentle nature made the process as comfortable as possible. Not to mention she took the time to explain the process and check in throughout to make sure Sassy received the right style haircut. It was the perfect pampering spa day and it really couldn't have been easier since I didn't even have to leave my apartment.

I have a small cockapoo and a large goldendoodle. Holli does the grooming for both of them. My dogs are so much happier going to Holli and she does an excellent job! The environment is so much calmer which makes me and my dogs happy! They don't have the stress of a larger grooming facility with all the barking dogs and having to be left there for an entire day. She listened to what I wanted done and did exactly that. She's great with the dogs too. I would recommend her 100%

We have used Pamper Ur Pet for about 2 months now. Due to a shift in our work schedule, there is one night during the week that our dog is stuck inside longer than we like. We started with the 30 minute pamper session and could not be happier. We know longer have to worry about a mess and our dog has her needs taken care of. Faith is fantastic and excellent with our dog.

I've said it before, and I will say it again - there is no better place for a dog than SkyBlue Kennels. The owner Julie and her staff are absolutely top-notch. Julie has been taking care of my fuzzy daughter since she was working at another facility in the Austin area. When she moved on to her own endeavor and opened SkyBlue, I could not have been more thrilled. Julie makes you feel like you're dropping your dog off at a trusted friend's house; she knows each of her clients inside and out, and individualizes the experience for each one. Her staff is equally wonderful, and even when my work takes me out of town for 2 weeks at a time I know I do not have to worry for even a moment about my mutt [who is my whole world!]. For these reasons, I drive all the way from Houston to board my dog where I know she is safe and will have a blast at the same time. An additional benefit if cost is a huge factor - SkyBlue is one of the most affordable facilities in the area. Literally, the best place for the best price. There is no place like this one!

Nora did a full service groom to my Border Collie Sadie whom is almost 15 years old. Sadie's health is declining so Nora treated her with gentle care and my old girl is so happy now as is my family. We will definitely use Home Sweet Home Grooming again and will recommend her services to all my family and friends!

My husband and I couldn't have been more pleased with our experience with Top Dog. Our dog Penny had developed some major behavioral issues - barking at strangers, jumping up, and not coming when called. Megan not only turned Penny into an obedient, dream dog, she also gave us the tools to continue her training at home. Worth every penny (no pun intended).

I've hired Ms. Goodman on a number of occasions--both long and short term. My older dog, Reggie, struggles with complicated physical problems which require elaborate administering of various medications. She has always put my mind at ease when I'm away because of her attention to detail and dedication regarding his condition. She is a clear communicator, very down to earth--an all around extremely reliable care-taker who goes far above and beyond any regular pet-sitters I've used in the past. I recommend her with flying colors.

I took my puppies to Canine Kingdom and paid $40 for each! The groomer (Joy) did such an amazing job and let them roam around a small area instead of putting them in a kennel while they waited for me to pick them up. She was very sweet and gentle with my puppies and I felt very comfortable leaving them with her. I will definitely trust her to groom my puppies in the future!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

    What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

    What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

How much does it cost to groom a dog?

Dog grooming costs depend on the service your pet requires. Nationally, the average price for dog grooming ranges from $40 to $100, varying by location. Not surprisingly, dog grooming on New York’s Upper East Side costs nearly double what it costs in a small town in Montana. Dog groomers typically handle every aspect of your dog’s beauty and hygiene, from tooth brushing to hairstyling. One potential way to save is to have your dog groomed at your doggy daycare — sometimes they offer discounts on dog grooming prices for clients. Here are some examples of average dog grooming costs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Please note these prices would include transportation fees for picking up and dropping off your dog to your home:

    • Nails: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
    • Toothbrushing: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
    • Tooth scraping (removal of plaque from teeth to prevent infection), with anesthesia: $600
    • Tooth scraping, without anesthesia: $400.
    • Wash and dry: $60
    • Ears: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
    • Grooming package: $130 — includes wash, nails, teeth, ears, gland expression and haircut

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

    • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
    • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
    • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
    • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
    • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
    • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.
