Tim came out to our house to cut down a bar height bar to counter height. Our house was built in the 70s so it was a bit of an undertaking with laminate and an odd construction. He did a great job and very quickly I might add. I was afraid that a wall would be damaged when the bar top came off but he some how managed to not damage it all. He was quick, efficient and VERY fairly priced. We will definitely be using him again and would recommend him to anyone.

Brandon did an awesome job of installing two fans and removing another one. He was on time, efficient, and got everything done without any problem at all. We look forward to hiring Brandon for future projects at the house as well and couldn't be happier with the decision to hire him for this task. Thank you!

Work was completed today. Despite a little delay on the window order, everything looks great. We had two windows that were simply foggy in our new house. He was respectful and courteous. So far very happy!

Juan was great. I am extremely pleased with how my bathroom turned out. He painted, and updated the commode, vanity, mirror, lighting and flooring in less than 2 days. When we ran into an unexpected issue due to the builder-grade plumbing, he had someone at my house immediately to take care of the problem. He is competitively priced and I will definitely use his services on other projects in my home.

I have never been so impressed with a service technician as I was with Tony. After arriving right on time and introducing himself, he immediately took off his shoes and put on little footies before entering my house. After surviving a decade of soccer teams and reminding them to always remove their cleats, this was a very welcomed sight! He tackled my HVAC problem to find the Nest thermostat wasn't talking to the unit (this required lots of in and out of the house and lots of footie action!). Finding the Nest wasn't performing well, he called Next, found it still under warranty, and placed the work order so that all I had to do was call, verify my shipping information, and wait for my new thermostat. I was amazed and very thankful. He even came back by after it arrived and installed it for no charge. I will definitely be calling Fixed again!!

Manuel and his team did such an amazing job on my daughters nursery ceiling and walls! The walls and ceiling are absolutely perfect, and as an interior designer by trade, I have high standards. My husband and I are hoping to build a home this fall and plan to contact Manuel again for all the drywall in the new house. Not only is the finished quality top notch, but they also took precautions to make sure the room was taped off to reduce dust from getting all over the rest of the house. Highly recommend.

I needed someone to paint the exterior of our 1940 house. I wanted a contractor willing to remove as much of the old, peeling paint as possible, and the big painting outfits are just not interested in doing this amount of prep work. I got five bids, and Fina Ross of ROSS Painting Contracting stood out to me from the start. As we walked around my house the first time, I noticed immediately her extreme attention to detail. She expressed concern about the various ways our house wasn't sealed against water and educated me on how she suggested correcting this prior to painting. Although I was also very interested in one other contractor, I chose Fina because she said she "really wants to give people what they want." I believed her, and she delivered on this promise. Fina worked hard to organize crews to powerwash, scrape, and sand the original wood siding. She made sure her guys filled every nook and cranny before painting. I also had Fina replace the trim around the windows. When the old trim was removed, Fina discovered that there was no insulation around any of the windows. She paused in the work to purchase what she needed to insulate the windows before replacing the trim. Once Fina addressed this unexpected need, it made a huge difference in reducing the street noise coming into our house. Throughout the project, we ran into unexpected bumps, and Fina did an excellent job of proposing the most cost-effective solutions that would also retain or add value to our home. I will not hesitate to hire Fina again for other home projects.

I needed to have 16 linear ft of interior wall removed to open up the house. Additionally, there would be new drywall and repair requirements, flooring, and paint to finish the project. Jim was not the cheapest of the 3 quotes that were offered, but, as an experienced home builder for 30+ years, he impressed, was methodical and scientific in his project approach, is insured, and the pictures of the work that was completed in his portfolio were great. The project did have scope creep, and the cost adjustments were transparent and fair. The project came out to my satisfaction. Professional, meticulous, OCD (it’s great for a contractor), polite, and trustworthy; both individually and in his resourcing and supervision of subcontractors for the areas not under his direct scope (floor and paint). I would also like to add, that during this project, I unfortunately broke my tibia, being immobilized till now. Jim was courteous, ensured area safety, cleanliness, and even when I needed personal aid (an occasional run to the fast food joint) he did it. He cares about his work and his clients.

We have an old home and we had 2 bathrooms redone. This included demoing two bath/showers. We had onyx shower stall put in one bathroom and new counter top on the vanity and new toilet. The other bathroom had a bathtub/shower installed, new counter top and toilet. Ours being an old house included some unexpected challenges that Felipe handled. Communication was very good between us. Always kept us informed of the issues, progress, next steps. I would use him again.

This team worked hard, worked well and worked fast. I moved into a house and hated the color of the walls. I decided to repaint the entire house but knew that there were parts of the process that I would have to get a professional to complete. When Marco and his team came to paint the staircase, it was clear to me that I was in over my head and they gave me a quote to paint the entire house. The price was reasonable so I accepted. After seeing the first coat, I was immediately elated. The color looked great and the quality of the work was incredible. Their crew was finished in 2 days with a two-level house. They took great care to protect the floors, trim and other areas of the house. I highly recommend them and would definitely use their services again.

I shifted in my new house and wanted to get the house painted. These guys did an awesome job :) Booking them was really easy. They are very responsive, over phone and text. They did a walk thru before the actual job and gave me a very competitive quote. On the day of painting, they were at my house exactly at the time decided. And completed the job very efficiently. They did a great job with my accent wall and game room geometric wall :) I am really happy and will definitely recommend them :)

I've had multiple projects going on at my house, which I've hired different people for. This really gave me the opportunity to compare experiences between different companies. I have to say that Chris at HomeIsHowYouBuildIt is friendly, reliable, very thorough and efficient, from the beginning to the end of projects. He is incredibly knowledgeable, he works quickly, and the quality of his work is nothing short of perfect. I am in love with how my projects turned out.

My husband and I decided to hire MD Contracting as our contractor to remodel the whole interior. Our house was built in 1975 and we needed to have it updated for our safety and comfort. Kenneth and Tiffany were the right people for the job. They responded promptly and listened to our ideas and needs. Their crew worked hard and they didn't leave a lot of mess after their work each day. Both Kenneth and Tiffany are good and honest people. We enjoyed working with them. Joel & Wanida

We hired Cutting Edge after dealing with several nightmare contractors. We were traumatized by our previous experiences so much so that we were scared to work with anyone in Austin again. We started with a foundation job on one house, expanded from there. We have now hired them on 3 different homes. Cutting Edge has taken over 2 jobs that other contractors completely botched and they have saved our bacon. They are currently working on a full rehab and addition for us. We are always consulted every step of the way and all costs are disclosed ahead of the work performed. Our houses look beautiful. The quality of the work is high end and communication with the owner is great. The subs were also professional, respectful and very skilled. Working with these guys has felt like a collaboration and we can't imagine working with anyone else.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
