Heather began training me for an NPC bikini show in March. In just the first three weeks of her training me I lost 3% body fat, and over 6 inches. It has now been 11 weeks and I have lost 28 pounds, 10% body fat, and countless inches. I cannot thank her enough; she's the best!

My boyfriend and I had reservations about hiring another personal trainer after our experience from the last one, Pree's can do attitude impressed us right away! After detailing the type of training we're looking for Pree directed us to Amol who came to our home to speak with us and address our concerns. In our first conversation, Amol was able to answer all of our questions, ease our concerns, and even educate us on some nutritional advice for the upcoming training sessions. One of the great things my boyfriend and I enjoy about training with Amol is that he's quick to adjust the workout for our needs, you definitely don't feel pressed for time as he spends the time you need working out and answering questions, and his motivation and engagement while training keeps our spirits high (even though the workout is kicking our butt)! We've been training with Amol for about two weeks now and we thoroughly enjoy it! Thanks Nirvana GYM!!!

I've been training with Percy for six months now, and it has been the best decision I've made for my body. I train a firm three hours a week, as opposed to wasting time at the gym in the past, if I even went. These workouts have been the key to shifting my natural desire for sugar to a desire for healthy food, which is the biggest factor in losing weight. I have toned considerably, gained muscle, and lost twelve pounds. The biggest physical difference however, is how many inches I've lost. The stress of a poor body image has mostly faded; I feel much more confident and my husband is really excited about how I've progressed. Percy is extremely personable, flexible with schedules, and considerate of the appointment time. I would challenge anyone to find a better deal. I commit to my three hours, and it really has paid off.

If you are looking to swallow your excuses and work with someone who will hold you accountable to achieving your maximum potential, then you will be in good hands with Greg. I have been training for just a few weeks, and truthfully, I am achieving more than I thought was possible. In my opinion, Greg's dedication and commitment to his client's success put him a step above the rest. You will need to keep an open mind about a healthy diet and eating enough food to fulfill your body's caloric needs. I feel confident in trusting Greg's expertise and getting the end results that I want.

Before I met Chris, I had tried just about everything to get what I thought was a perfect body. However, no matter how much triathlon training, crossfit, running, and watching what I ate, I couldn't figure out how to get what I wanted. I was already working very hard by preparing vegetarian food and spending lots of time doing cardio. I initially had reservations about hiring a trainer because I thought it would be too expensive. I also thought I should be smart enough to figure it out on my own. But, after 33 years, I finally decided to hire a professional. Within a month of working with Chris, I saw significant results. I was stunned. After four months, he helped me achieve the beach body that I wanted for a trip to Miami. With just one training session a week, the benefits have way exceeded the cost. After Miami, now Chris is helping me to build up my legs. I couldn't be more pleased with the results that Chris helped me achieve. I've gotten never gotten so many compliments and stares in my life. The best part is that I finally have a great physique that I can maintain. I highly recommend hiring him!!

I started personal training with David in January and have made more progress in the past few months than I have in years. I tore my ACL in 2015 and after surgery I never really got back into a consistent strength training routine until now. David has kept me motivated and made me realize that my old injury doesn’t have to be an excuse. The corrective exercises and mini progressions have given me a lot more confidence with how I move now. I haven’t been this active in some time now so it’s been a great experience overall getting back at it.

NesselRoad2Fitness was definitely a game changer for me especially when trying to drop weight before my wedding day. I had little faith that I could drop even 20 lbs being just 6 months away from my big day. With the right direction (regarding healthy eating and cardio) and our regular weekly sessions I actually dropped 37 lbs by my final weigh in, 10 of those pounds I lost in the first month. I couldn’t believe my measurements. He keeps track of weight lost, measurements, and fat percentage on weigh in days and it really helps to put your progress in perspective. Andrew is a tough trainer but in a good way. He will help to hold you accountable but you still have to want it for yourself. With all the effort you put into your sweat sessions though, you won’t want to jeopardize your progress by eating bad. He helps you to help yourself!! Signing up for his training was one of my best decisions last year! If only I had signed up sooner!

Cody cares about his clients. I have injured my body in the past. While I looked good, I was in pain. Cody understands my needs as a client and puts my needs before just getting a training session. That means my goals, posture, health and overall well being are always on his mind.

David is a great trainer and really knows his stuff! He was very helpful in the gym by pushing and motivating me to complete the different work outs. He also has a lot of nutrition information and helped me better understand what kind of foods to eat. I would definitely recommend him to those looking to get in shape and be more healthy!

I am 59 years young and had goals I wanted to achieve. Going to the gym does not compare to personal training. Cynthia is professional, knowledgeable and your goals are her goals. She has a written workout for me every time I have a session. This tells me she gives my goals a lot of thought and is prepared when I arrive. I also have a Disability in my foot. Cynthia personally gives this a lot of thought when she designs a workout to fit me and my issue. I have lost weight, toned up and have broadened my mobility range significantly. If you are looking for an affordable top notch personal trainer that is knowledgeable and caring about your goals as much as you, look no further. This is your person!

I have been training under Caitlin for almost 3 months and love the obvious result seen. I have dropped 12 pounds since my last yearly physical and feel much healthier than ever before. Caitlin offers close and guided support that makes newcomers feel comfortable and secure. Her work out routine is tapered and flexible for just about anyone. In addition to the work out services that Caitlin provides she also volunteered to assist me in planning a healthier diet. Caitlin met me at Central Market and helped me shop and prepare a more meaningful menu as well change my poor eating habits. I have never seen anyone as driven and committed to the cause as she! Thanks Caitlin! Jerry Vela

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
