We hired Chuck to help our 17yr old son, Mark, prepare for his SAT and ACT. Chuck was always on time meeting my son which I love because I love punctuality. My son really liked Chuck and didn't mind meeting with him at all on his own time. Chuck was understanding to my son work schedule. Also, Chuck was able to give Mark ways of understanding the questions better so Mark can get through the questions thoroughly but faster and with confidence. His practice tests clearly showed the improvements that Chuck was helping him with.

My son needed help with math and when I started shopping around I found private tutors to be expensive which was discouraging until I found Planting Seeds Tutoring!!! We worked with Chris to set a clear goal path and we were matched with Hannah as our tutor. Planting Seeds aka Hannah has been a blessing to us. Hannah is incredible!! She has this ability to drag my son out of his teen mode and get him to interact and have fun while tutoring. Some days are harder than others but Hannah doesn't give up! Its only been a few months and my sons math grade has already improved at school. I highly recommend Planting Seeds Tutoring they will work with you to ensure you get the service you need. They are not just selling a product they actually care and want to help you accomplish your goals. Not only are they service friendly but also affordable. Chris has worked with my on every level to ensure nothing would get in the way of my son getting the help he needed. Hannah has been great and flexible with our crazy weekly schedules and is always wiling to accommodate us. I'm excited to see what Planting Seeds will help my son achieve. Thank you Chris & Hannah!!!

I have never used a tutor before, so I was apprehensive to use one recommended to me by my fellow student for my ACT. Having sat them before I really needed help to ensure I could raise my score. So I engaged Chelsea International. I am flipped over by the level of support I have received from them as a student and now realize what my friend was talking about, no wonder he was always doing so well. My ACT score came in above average at a 28 and I am really pleased. Thank you!

Working with Jackie these past few weeks has been great. My goal was to get better at the math portion of the SAT and quicker with math in general. I feel much more clear and confident with my test taking ability. I would recommend Jackie to anyone who is looking for help with test taking strategies, math concepts and math practice.

I took Michal’s 8-wk GRE class at ATX prep this fall and I had a very positive experience. As a working professional preparing for graduate school, preparing for the math portion of GRE test was an intimidating endeavor. Michal is extremely encouraging and supportive of his students while maintaining a laid-back teaching style. He’s also generous with his time and genuinely wants to see his students succeed. An exceptionally nice guy and great teacher! The only thing I would I didn’t like about the class (and this may just be based on personal learning-preference) was that 2 or 3 of the 8-wk class classes were taught by another teacher named Chelsea. I thought the class she taught on the analytical essay was very helpful, but her math-teaching approach didn't work for me. When I left Michal’s classes, I left feeling confident about the material that was covered. I left Chelsea’s math feeling flustered and with unanswered questions. However, I was able to get those questions resolved before the end of the course. My overall experience was excellent and I would recommend this course to anyone who needs support preparing for the GRE.

I was failing. Period! I was at a loss on how to pass Economics. I was assigned Mr. Ramiro and we sat and he went over the syllabus, and he talked and questioned me a lot! The next meeting he had assignments for me, While I did them he would review my notes and give me additional homework. But he would give me practice exams. I was taking 12 hours plus tutoring and the homework was crazy. But Mr. Mata drilled me and explained everything at my level and not at the doctorate level so well I went from an "F" to a final grade of a "C". If I would have had him before midterms, I may have gotten a "B" or an "A"! And he is a tutor for other courses in which I will request his services! Paul D. Mr Latimer is a great teacher! He tutored me from basic English class to SAT preparation. He is very responsible and patient. He helped me a lot with my reading and writing assignments even now I’m in college. He is very knowledgeable that he could tell you all about the wars and Shakespeare. Those topics might not sound interesting, but his sense of humor could make them fascinating!

I used Megan as a personal tutor 2 years ago in my English class. She was amazing, I brought my grade up to an A from a C thanks to her. So I then decided to use her last year to get a professional resume done. Thanks to her very professional help, I managed to score a great job over three others. She even helped me prep for the interview.

      About

My name is Merry Zide and I have been studying as a graduate student in the History Department at UT-Austin. I provide private tutoring in history, English, writing, and test prep for students of all ages. Learning how to read critically and write clearly tends to improve academic performance across the board. Students with strong reading and writing skills can absorb and communicate information effectively, even when they are not entirely familiar with the material. I have learned that mastering these basic skills is as important for college and graduate students as for elementary and high school students. When I tutor in particular subjects like History or English, I try to help students improve on basic study skills, and I emphasize relationships and critical thinking over memorization and rote learning.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

      • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
      • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
      • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
      • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
