Introduction: I have been a professional musician having earned a living playing drums and percussion in Los Angeles T.V. studios and on Tour. I bring the best of teachings from Fred Gruber, Joe Porcaro, and a degree from the Dick Grove School of Music Hollywood to the lesson room. My students record songs as they learn the rudiments and technique with professional musicians on drummer less recordings in order to get the experience of playing in a professional environment. My prices are competitive and I offer a broad scheduling range. NOTE TO FUTURE STUDENTS: I live in Houston, TX and teach from my fully equipped recording studio. IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE THE HOUSTON AREA, I CAN ONLY TEACH YOU VIA ZOOM, OR A SIMILAR APP. Also, I don’t teach children younger than 10 ONLINE unless they have had at least one year of piano or another instrument. An adult must be present during the lesson for all students under the age of 10 as well. My students range in ages 6 to 85. They are beginning to advanced. Instruments include; snare drum, drum set, congas, djembe, and other hand percussion. I teach each person as an individual—no cookie-cutter approach ever. I strive hard to balance learning and fun! If you study with me in Houston, for each song you learn, you get a professional engineered CD of you in the drummer's chair playing along with the song and an MP3 download link for your friends and family. Tuition fees are due at the 1st of the month. Invoices go out 10 days prior to the first. I accept cash, checks and all major credit cards. I do give a discount for those that drive over 15 miles to reach my Houston studio. I do offer 1 free "Get to Know You Lesson" as a goodwill, get to know you gesture. I hope you will take advantage of it. Thanks for considering me. Paul

Paul is an awesome teacher! My son took lessons from him for several years. Parents are able to watch the lessons to see exactly what they are learning. Paul is also just a really kind and nice person. He always worked with us when having to reschedule or last minute emergencies. It was a great experience all the way around! Wish my son hadn't given up drums for girls!

It was always fun going to drum lessons and learning new songs and working with him, and I’ll definitely be back in the future.
Paul's Drum & Recording Studio's reply
Thanks for the kind words. Sawyer has turned into a fine young man and a very talented drummer. I hope to have him back soon. He is in the school band playing bassoon I think. I am ready for you to return as soon as possible. Paul

My son started taking lessons from Paul when he got passed over in middle school band for the “ popular” boy, who lasted a month. It was the best thing for Jesse, as he stayed with “Mr Kush” until he left for college! He loved his lessons and practiced constantly. Paul also helped him with his mentorship project in 12th grade ....... a lot of work and a very gracious gesture on his part. Jesse continues to play drums with various bands and musician friends, and music has been a huge part of his success in life. Paul Kush goes above and beyond for his students and we are proud to call him a friend.

Thanks for the kind words Jan. Jesse has turned into a very responsible and successful young man with all his endeavors. He is a very accomplished and tenured drummer now having played professionally with a couple of different bands in the Texas region. I am proud to have been able to touch Jesse's life from an early age. He was always very respectful and excited about learning new things. I follow him through Facebook and his Mother Jan's postings. They always bring me great joy. Paul

Paul provides drum lessons at his studio and I am one of his students. There are many things I like about Paul as an instructor but what I really appreciate is his knowledge, professionalism, and teaching ability. As a busy lawyer taking drum lessons as a hobby, I appreciate Paul’s willingness to work with my schedule. He’s also a great teacher, able to explain complicated concepts while managing to make lessons fun. If you want to learn how to play the drums in the correct way, and have fun doing it, Paul’s the teacher for you. I recommend him highly!

Thanks Norma for the kind words. Your dedication to practice has already shown great results in the songs you have learned and recorded. We are now working on Hotel California and having a ball. Many more to come from Norma that would make many professionals stand up and take notice. Paul

I’ve been taking drum lessons from Paul for a year and a half. Paul makes it very easy and fun to learn. He is a very talented and experienced musician and teacher. I am a church percussionist and Paul customizes the lessons to fit what I need to work on to grow and continue to play with our church praise band. His professional studio is well equipped and he uses state of the art tools and methods to make learning and practicing easier. I also like that he creates a professional recording in the studio of each song I work on. It establishes a goal to practice, learn, and work towards. When the recording is complete, he gives it to me and I feel it is a sign of accomplishment. Then we move on to the next thing. I would recommend Paul to anyone that wants to learn or increase their skill level as a percussionist!

Thanks for the kind words. Working with you is always fun. I too enjoy watching your percussionist skills grow. Paul

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I charge by the half hour for private lessons. Hour lessons are available for those that qualify. My pricing is competitive for what I offer. j I do offer discounts for those that have to drive over 15 miles to take lessons as well as for cash payments. I do offer credit card payments.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

Understand their current aptitude for playing. Start where appropriate and encourage to practice with techniques that insure the quickest learning curve. I do not use cookie-cutter programs. Each student is unique. I develop a specific customized program for each student.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I studied with Freddie Gruber, Buddy Rich's best friend and the premier teacher in Los Angeles. I also studied with Joe Porcaro. I have a music degree and relate the drums to other instruments in the band. I have played all over the country, Tahoe, Reno, Vegas, been on Decca Records, recorded T.V. Shows and many top 40 recordings in Los Angeles Studios over the years. I have worked with Aretha Franklin, The Righteous Brothers, Lalo Shifrin, Harvey Mason, Lee Ritenour, to name a few. I have a great deal of training and experience to share with my students.
