Juan was amazing to work with. He took the time to find exactly what I wanted, was very affordable, did a great job installing the granite, protected the floors in the house so he wouldn't damage anything, and most of all is trustworthy. I had another contractor bail on some other jobs at the house and Juan graciously offered to complete the drywall/painting work. He made it look really good! Juan communicates very well, shows up when he says he will, and completes the job with integrity. I will be using him in the future and highly recommend him. Trustworthy contractors are rare to find these days.

I needed a ceiling fan installed in my bedroom, but the original light fixture did not have needed support for the ceiling fan. I called Blast's Way, You Way and received amazing customer service. I was able to book an appointment for someone to add an additional 2x4 to support the new fan and the installation. The installer, Steven, was on time and completed the work in a reasonable amount of time. The price was affordable as well. I will be using their services again.

First time Thumbtack user, and experience exceeded my expectations! Mr. Flores responded so quickly despite logging in to the app so late! I can't say enough about him and his co-worker. Very reasonable, accommodating, and professional! Please give this man an opportunity for a quote, he will not disappoint. SO GLAD I didn't go with Home Depot with my water heater installation. Not only did he save me a lot of money, but I know I still would be waiting on hot water. I even have him in mind for a wish list bathroom project in the future!

We had a drywall project that we started but couldn't finish. So after doing research we decided to contact Isaac. He came out did the estimate and was able to squeeze us into his schedule. I am very happy with the work that he and his crew have done. I will definitely use him again in. Thank you Isaac and crew for the smile on my face and for a wonderful job.

We had Willy for painting and laminate installation. Overall the price and works were very good. There were somethings can be better (patching for wall cracks, finish of quarter round ends, nail holes on stairs, few gaps on laminate floor) but overall we are satisfied.

We had a brick patio installed. To do this, David Torres had to remove paver brick cobblestone, and several square feet of flagstone, plus patio furniture and many large containers of plants. He also removed 2 trees. David leveled the construction site completely. He had to work in a very confined space but managed without any complaints. His workers were very friendly and helpful and everyday, left the job site as neat as possible. David and his crew did a very good job! It was a difficult area to stage and work around. Had to bring all the material down a narrow alley. We are pleased with the quality of the construction and it is very sound. Exactly what we wanted. David is easy to communicate with and very friendly and tireless and will not stop until you are satisfied with his mason work. David is a real professional and truly pleasant to work with. We named him "the gentle giant". I'd be glad to discuss further and provide pictures of his brick work. Begin forwarded message: From: "Thumbtack.com" Subject: Did Torres Construction do a good job?

Joe Weldon helped us with a roof leak. He climbed on our roof and took pictures to show that our builders had not sealed any openings on our roof! He ran to Home Depot and finished the whole project within the hour on the Friday before a holiday weekend. All for a very fair price, as well! He kept us updated and informed throughout the whole process. I really recommend him for any roofing repair needs!

Nice guy, knows a lot about Construction. He was faced with a pretty large job and completed it successfully. He did everything from demo work to redesign, plumbing and tile work. He did install one tile that was chipped on the edge but it is barely noticeable. I'm pretty sure he would come out and replace it if I called him, because he's that kind of guy. He worked with our schedule and priced the job below my other bids. Trustworthy, and I would use him again.

Katrina and her team finished my porcelain/granite tile flooring, painting, and half bathroom installation. She was the only contractor that provided a reasonable cost out of all of the quotes I received. Her team arrived promptly each day and did a tremendous job! I will definitely use them for all of my future home projects as well as recommend them to all of my acquaintances.

Lan-Bar company gave me a great experience in getting a new roof! Lindsey was so nice and professional from our initial conversation and even gave a follow-up call to make sure the roof was to my liking. The crew that installed the roof was great as well. They cleaned up well and I haven't found a nail yet and it's been a over a week since they installed the roof. The price was also extremely reasonable! I would definitely recommend this company and plan on using them in the future to install a patio!

Julian did an awesome job! He drove all the way to Humble from Missouri City and charged and was beyond reasonably priced! We even asked him to do some other little things around our home and he did them even though we hadn't discussed them. He took the time to show my husband how to float and tape drywall. He's a super cool dude and we are so thankful for his help.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
