He was wonderful... Punctual and knowledgeable... Moved some furniture out to the garage for me and took apart my treadmill to move it from one room to another. Not one issue, will definitely use him again.

I had a side garage door installed and I was extremely pleased with the results! Not only was it installed perfectly, but he also painted it too. I would have had to paint the door myself if I had chosen another contractor. He also put on the locks. The quality of work was outstanding and the price was great too!

I drink black coffee a lot and there has been a building up of stains in random areas of the house. So I looked around online and found Lone Star Pro Service. They had offered me the best price so we set up an appointment. They came and cleaned the carpet, no coffee spots were visible. I am very happy!!

Teresa is awesome individual to work with. She's very easy going, sweet, and she's a hard worker. The prices are also very fair. Our water cut off in the building and she was even willing to come back the next day to finish the job. I loved her attitude and she'll be the first person on my list that I contact next time we need a cleaning! Thanks, Teresa!

My wife and I decided to remodel both bathrooms in our house. They needed a fresh look and a complete update. Having seen the quality of work done by Tell Projects, I knew that I wanted them to do the work. I had Zach come by my house with his truck (the mobile showroom) and show my wife the many samples of flooring, tile, cabinets, and hardware. She was so impressed with Zach and the quality of his products that she agreed with me that Tell Projects was the company we wanted to do the work for us. Tell Projects gave us a 10-14 day estimate to finish the work. The workers were courteous and respectful of both our home and the three cats we have in the house. Like any remodeling project there were a couple of things that we added to the project. Both times Zach came by to inspect the issue and let us know how much the additional work would cost. They finished both rooms in 16 days due to the additional work we requested. The whole process was a very positive experience. None of the nightmare stories that you hear about remodeling. Both Zach and Ellie kept in constant contact with my wife and I. They answered our questions and made suggestions for every decision that had to be made from the tile, to the flooring, to the number of shower heads we needed. Each day the men worked quickly and cleaned up before leaving. I would recommend Tell Projects for any job you have from replacing a door to adding a room to your home. If I could use three words to describe this company they would be honest, respectful, and quality. Thank you Tell Projects and especially Zach and Ellie for two beautiful bathrooms!! Ken Robinson

Stan was top notch. Very affordable for the level of quality. He did everything he said he would do and more. Stan built out/framed a large overhead storage area in my oversized garage. He also did all the Sheetrock and paint work. I have recommended Galveston Construction to my mother and would recommend them to anyone else who has construction needs. It's not always easy these days to find someone who does what they say and exceeds your expectations. I found one in Stan. He'll be my first call for future projects. Ben J.

Les worked for me on three occasions, each time for fairly extensive periods, averaging 2 - 3 months each time. Originally, I wanted to fix up our old place before selling it. The bathrooms were the main area of interest, and he suggested using tile for the lavatories which had originally been done in cultured marble that had yellowed and stained over time. The finished results looked outstanding. When he had completed the majority of the original work, a roof leak following a storm damaged my wooden floors and the ceiling and wall sheetrock upstairs. A few months later, Les returned and re-floored partial sections of two upstairs rooms. The original flooring had been applied with glue, so it was extremely difficult to get the floor level again so that new wood could be laid, but he managed to do so, and the net result was that the new flooring blended in seamlessly. Damage to the ceiling was also repaired expertly. Finally, when we moved into our new place, Les 1) made a number of sheetrock repairs throughout the house, 2) repainted most of the house (2400 sq. feet with several flights of stairs), 3) removed the carpeting and refloored the downstairs bedroom/office using hardwood, and 4) built a custom wall-to-wall (8' wide by 8' high) bookcase in one of the upstairs rooms, and 4) applied an epoxy coating to the garage. I was extremely satisfied with the quality of all of the work and feel confident in saying that Les can take on any challenge given to him. He is also dependable and trustworthy.

Rodney came to my house and put together a basketball goal that I’ve had sitting for almost 2 years. I am very happy with his work. I still haven’t shown my son the goal, because I have it hidden in the garage but he will be VERY excited when I show him. Thanks again

Scott came out the same day as requested, he explained everything he was going to do before starting work and went over everything after finishing. I had several outlets that needed changed out in garage and some new ones added as well, needed old wires to electrical box ripped out as they were not to code and Scott added the new wires which are to code. He was very efficient and did excellent quality work! He was very fair with price. I will definitely be using Scott for future electric work A++

We used Brandstell to rebuild and renovate our home after Hurricane Harvey. They have been beyond exceptional throughout the entire process. They really took the time to understand exactly what I wanted and executed it flawlessly. No detail has gone unnoticed. They are skilled in all aspects of home building. They have taken great care of our house and we even chose to move in while the renovation was still underway and they’ve been so accommodating in making sure we’re comfortable and respecting everything we’ve moved in. I could go on and on but do not miss the opportunity to hire Brandstell for any home improvements you’re looking to do.

I had the exterior of my house painted. KD&D worked with my budget and finished on time. They even came back after I paid them to clean up a few places where there was overspray. Some of the detailed parts of the painting were a little messy. It was super hot and they did a great job.

We had a fantastic experience with Phillip Edward Construction, and specifically with Luis. We needed to have a closet built in our house in order for one of the rooms to count as a bedroom when we listed our house for sale. The project needed to be done quickly and done well. From our first meeting, Luis was the utmost level of professional. Throughout the project he kept us updated on the progress as well as the timeline. He was very flexible as we had a lot going on leading up to our listing. The finished project far exceeded our expectations and was very reasonable price-wise. We will be calling Luis in the future for our handyman needs!

Working with Oliver and his team of professionals was fantastic. I had an idea of how I wanted to remodel my house, but Oliver turned it into way way more than that! My mind was blown as we met and discussed ideas. Every time I walked away from a meeting with Oliver, I was grinning from ear to ear exited about what my house would soon become. Best of all, it was done on time and on budget. High five to Oliver and his crew.

Tony Salazar worked well with our church Building Committee, developed a plan and proposed a fair price. The crew completed the work before our Easter deadline and we were all very pleased with the quality of TNT's service.

Rebuilt a two story apartment building that required the entire back wall to be rebuilt while shutting off power and plumbing to the building. It was done well with minimal problems. We even created a laundry room. Rodney worked with his trades, the engineers, and city inspectors without issue. His commitment to detail and quality causes me to think of him first when I need something. I will use him again.

Amazing Dezign by Simon O. is a company filled with master craftsman who can bring any vision to light. We were very specific in our needs and they exceeded our expectations. We hired them to design, build, and finish two white oak tables and a coat rack for my son’s room. All three pieces came out stunning and are beautifully designed. Their work speaks for itself and looks very high end. Our goal was to have our furniture look like it belonged in a designer showroom and the pieces they created look top of the line. We shopped around a lot before going with them and other companies were either much more expensive or could not guarantee us the outcome we were looking for. Simon guided us through the whole process, made us feel at ease, and delivered more than we expected. The best decision we ever made was going with Amazing Dezign and we will definitely be using them again for other projects.

Macyas Remodeling helped me renovate my office building after it got flooded by Hurricane Harvey. They worked hard and quickly and didn't price gouge. I was very happy with the result. I will hire them again when I need a good contractor and will defiantly recommend them to others.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
