It has been a great experience having Janet as a tutor. She has worked with my daughter to strengthen material learned in the past so it will help her with the new material she receives. Janet has been able to catch her up with difficult Geometry lessons and get her ready in advance of the material she is going to learn. My daughter's grade went from nearly failing to all A's in B's in K Level Geometry. I can definitely reccomend Janet as a tutor.

I have taken lessons from Ozer for two years. My main concern were my Abitur exams( German A-Levels, for your information I was in German High School Istanbul which is oriented on natural science, therefore, the topics of advanced mathematics, advanced physics and advanced chemistry were covered in the lessons.) Our learning plan was in the following way: If I was able to understand a topic and could solve some exercises on it,he gave me a quick recap on the subject. Afterwards, he let me solve more advanced questions or some exceptional cases to test and to deepen my knowledge. If was not able to solve those questions, I asked him questions to understand where I was wrong. If a topic was hard for me, he explained it thoruoghly and solved some exercises explaining every step of the solution. In this way one develops an algorithm to solve the questions. Then he lets me solve another exercise so that I gain some confidence on the subject. After I tell my solution he shows me which parts of my solution were right or wrong. He shows me some "tricks" to solve the question quicker. Sometimes he brought extra questions to let me see some other type of exercises on a topic which gave me a chance to have another point of view for a certain problem type. In the way he taught me maths physics and chemistry, I mastered these subjects. Therefore, I had 1.1 out of 6 (6 is the worst and 1 is the best grade) in Abitur.

Above Grade Level has been great working with my son. They were very flexible when designing a plan and schedule just right for him. He was really struggling with Geometry and shortly after Above Grade Level started working with him he got an A on his next exam and an A the first 6 weeks after his sessions began. We appreciate Above Grade Level and happy to report a very positive experience.

I received tutoring from Elizabeth Fry in college level Calculus I and II and in Physics I. She was absolutely amazing as my tutor! During lessons she would come with an action plan we could follow if I didn't already have specific questions and problems myself. She was incredibly patient and worked with me until I truly understood the material. Often times she knew what exactly it was that I stuggled with even though I didn't even know what I didn't know! Additionally, she provided me with ample websites, tools, and other resources that I could use when questions popped up and I was on my own. These were especially useful! She also made herself available through email if I had a specific question or problem and was quick to respond. During lessons she would take notes and solve problems in her own notebook. At the end of the lesson she would give these notes to me to refer back to later. Overall Elizabeth was an outstanding tutor and I would recommend her in a heartbeat. She goes above and beyond and really does care about helping you understand the material.

My daughter required intense daily tutoring to finish her correspondence class. Gary made a plan and between the private lessons and nightly homework assignments he gave her had the class wrapped up exactly as planned. My daughter had superior knowledge of the material that was reflected in her high grades.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.
