They have been awesome so far. We had to have them remove a critter from the wall and then repair the parts of the wall that needed to be cut out. They also repaired a portion of our ceiling that had been damaged by a leaking AC. They are coming back tomorrow to power wash our back patio and to do some exterior painting. I will let you know how it all works out. So far we are impressed! 😀

There's a reason why Daniel has a lot of great reviews. He provides great service at a reasonable price. I had a refrigerator leak. I created my job on Saturday and hired Daniel on the Sunday. We set up a time to meet on Monday. He also called me on Sunday to walk me through turning off the water to the refrigerator, which stopped the leak. This was great service because he didn't have to do this especially on the weekend. On Monday, he fixed the leak including driving through Houston lunch traffic to buy a needed part. I definitely recommend him if you need appliance repair services.

The entire process was very seamless. Robert’s appliance provided a detailed breakdown of what was needed to repair the GE washer. Edger and his crew was prompt and continued to communicate from the initial service call to the repair service call. I was shown the new parts that were replaced and the old parts that were broken. After the repair was performed, Edger confirmed the washer was operating correctly by going though the different phases of the wash cycle. The prices were reasonable and as quoted. I would definitely hire them again.

I had a garbage disposal that went out on me and submitted a request for installation. Mr. Cuevas responded quickly and demonstrated his willingness and confidence to do the job. On the day of service he was punctual, which seems to be lacking by a lot of companies today. In addition, he is very cordial and honest. He assessed the repair work and started working. He removed the damaged disposal unit and installed the new one. He tested the new one for leaks and explained to me how to use a new wrench that came with the unit for "unsticking" it if it ever got jammed. He gave me tips on how to keep the cabinet under the sink free of items that might bump into the unit. Overall, he did the work at the right price and went above and beyond my expectations on getting this repair done. I know I will continue to use his services in the future and highly recommend him to everyone. Thank you Mr. Cuevas!

I had to have both my water heaters replaced in the attic of a 2 story home. Ibrahim Flores responded first and asked when I needed this done.....my response was “now...LOL.” Well little did I know he did get on it right then! He was in and out that day....I was impressed and the quote was extremely reasonable. I have his number already saved in my phone and I told a friend of mine that needs some sheet rock repair done, gave her his number. Thank you Ibrahim, I got to take a long HOT shower this morning.

We had a large project that required installing and finishing new drywall as well patching, repair, and retexturing some of the existing drywall. Isaac and his crew did a great job in a timely manner and at a fair price. They also repaired some framing issues. Isaac stays on top of the job and makes sure it is done right and in a professional manner. We will definitely be hiring Decid's Painting and More for our next renovation project. They have abundant skills in the renovation process.

I've never been more pleased with electrician repair work! This company really takes care of the customer and had answers to my sometimes silly questions\. They upgraded our outdated, un-insurable Federal Pacific breaker box panel with a new one that fit our home beautifully!! The bids from other area electricians were outrageous! I can say that this is the 1st time I've used Thumbtack and there is nothing like it that I've had success with. I have found the perfect electric company and will be using Thumbtack to find a great plumber. Thank you Thumbtack! We LOVE Truman Electric and Stefan. ;)

I was late to schedule a carpet cleaning at my house and was worried I would not find someone that would come out on such short notice. Chris Davis with Gulf Coast restoration was able to make it out on a saturday afternoon on two days notice. He did good work for a very good price. I would certainly use his services again. Thanks!

Plumb Krazy caught my eye when they said they did in house free estimates. I felt more comfortable with them looking at my issues rather than taking my word for what the problem was. Brandon went above and beyond. He came to my house after hours to see what my issue was and said he be back the next day with parts for repair. He originally told me he didn't think they made my cartridge due to age but he'd check the supply houses to see if he could find it. If not, he'd have to replace the faucet, spout and shower head which would cost a few hundred dollars more. When I explained to Brandon that I plan to remodel my bathroom in the next 6 months and didn't really want to spend money I didn't have to on a repair at this time, he found my cartridge and replaced my spout with one he had on the truck for no additional charge since my diverter was going out on my old spout. He saved me a few hundred dollars and will definitely be my first choice for my next repair.

I had a recumbent exercise bike that needed some difficult repairs. Kelvin gave me a fair quote through Thumbtack and made it really easy for me to schedule the work. He arrived exactly when he said he would, was very thorough and friendly, and got the job done faster than I thought was possible. I will definitely call him again for any fitness equipment repairs or installations. Highly recommended. Thank you Kelvin!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What does a property management company do?

Property management companies manage the rental of residential homes, apartments, condos, commercial spaces and retail spaces. Property managers can oversee just a single unit or many properties, whether those sites are inhabited full-time or are vacation rentals. A property management company helps a property owner or landlord find tenants; collects rent; takes care of accounting, property maintenance and repairs; handles on-site management; and manages vacation rental check-in and checkout tasks. Although many property owners or landlords successfully manage their own rental real estate, a property management company can help you handle tenant issues and maintenance problems, especially if you are not located in the same city or state. Most property management companies deal with tenants directly, and their tasks include:

  • Marketing the rental property
  • Collecting rent
  • Handling repair problems
  • Responding to tenant complaints
  • Evicting tenants

A property management company may be a good choice for property owners who have several investment properties, live far away from the rental property, or don’t have time for hands-on management.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Why is property management important?

A property management company can be a landlord’s greatest asset. As a neutral third party, the property manager handles the day-to-day operations of a real estate investment, from a single vacation home to a large apartment building or several rental properties. A property management company can be especially helpful to landlords who own several units and can’t manage each of them individually, or those who live too far from their investment properties to meet with renters and oversee maintenance. Property management is particularly important if your rentals are part of an affordable housing program. To receive financial assistance from the government, the landlord must comply with a complicated set of rules; property management companies should have both experience and expertise in complying with the rules specific to each housing program.
