Spanish Tutoring Services
About this pro
I discovered a passion for foreign languages and cultures when I was in my twenties, which according to some, is too late to become fluent in a second language. Thanks to a lot of effort, more than a few frustrating and awkward moments, and some great teachers, I do not only became fluent in Spanish but also went on to earn a master's degree and publish a short story in my second language, and I beat out native speakers to obtain bilingual positions as a translator, consular officer and bilingual marketing manager. But after these job experiences, I realized that nothing brings me more joy than helping others overcome their fears and communicate more effectively in their second languages. I spent most of the last two decades teaching either English or Spanish as a second language, the latter for 14 years in the public school system and the former for seven years as an English teacher in Spain and several years after that teaching ESL in Houston area language centers such as LCI Houston, Houston Baptist University, Houston Community College and Premiere English. During that time, I learned a lot about the English language from a non-native speaker's point of view. What a crazy language. No wonder why so many people can't spell! Whether you would like to improve your conversation skills before your next trip, your essay for your next assignment (I have published original work in both languages) or your chances for doing well on your next test (including the AP Spanish Language and Culture exam), I can probably help you. I enjoy creating personalized lessons and connecting with students. Since June 2014, I have been tutoring ESL and Spanish students privately and through several Houston area language centers. My students range from Italian, Japanese and South American engineers striving to improve their English while working on a project in Bay City to high school students in Houston taking Spanish at night for credit so that they can do other things during the day. I work with books, websites, flashcards, spontaneous conversations, pop songs... whatever the students need and however they like and prefer to learn.

- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?I offer either an hourly rate for students to pay each time for a class or a discounted rate for students who are willing to pay for some classes in advance (usually at least six). I also offer a free meeting/consultation to get to know the student so that we can see if we will work well together, for me to come up with a plan for the classes, and for the student to decide which funding option and materials he/she would prefer.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?Discuss in advance about how the student learns and what they want to accomplish, then meet for a consultation (see above) free of charge.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?Master of Arts in Spanish, University of Houston; published work in Spanish and English; 14 years' experience as a high school Spanish teacher; At least 10 years' experience teaching EFL/ESL to adults in Houston and Spain; Texas teacher certification grades 6-12 Spanish, English Language Arts, English as a Second Language Endorsement, Gifted and Talented. I lived in Spain for seven years and have traveled to Spain, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.
