Juan was hired to assemble some bookcases for the office. He put them together and set them up against the wall. The project took a little over hour. Everything looked neat and finished.

Isaac and his team did a great job painting my home. They were able to get the job scheduled quickly. I had an electrician out who damaged my wall and Isaac was able to repair the damage and still complete the job ahead of schedule. Isaac was prompt in all of our communication. Checking in regularly to make sure I knew the status of the job. Overall I am quite happy with the work and will use him again in the future.

I have had so much trouble trying to get someone to take on my job. Because of some water damage, I was in need of a new a/c access door and repair to the surrounding ceiling. Eduaro responded to my request almost immediately, and scheduled a time to come take a look that same day. He took some measurements, told me his plans, and gave me a quote including materials within the hour. He arrived the next day ready to work. He was fast, efficient, professional, and polite and did a high quality job for a reasonable price. I absolutely recommend!

We had Willy for painting and laminate installation. Overall the price and works were very good. There were somethings can be better (patching for wall cracks, finish of quarter round ends, nail holes on stairs, few gaps on laminate floor) but overall we are satisfied.

Thank you Will for the great job you guys did on my new granite counter tops! Will was very helpful in helping me select the granite that would bring out my cabinets, wood floors and wall color and tie them all together. It was perfect. His guys were very professional even when there were some small rough spots in a piece of the granite they stayed and buffed them out until we were completely happy with the counter top. Will was very quick to respond to any calls. The guys were there on time and did the job in 1 day! We will definitely be using Will for future projects. Thanks Again, Kelly and Brian Anderson

Good experience. David showed up on time and did good work at a fair price. He repaired a small area on the exterior brick wall of our home in a tough spot to get to and made sure to repair it correctly. Very pleased with the experience and would recommend using him again.

Joe Weldon helped us with a roof leak. He climbed on our roof and took pictures to show that our builders had not sealed any openings on our roof! He ran to Home Depot and finished the whole project within the hour on the Friday before a holiday weekend. All for a very fair price, as well! He kept us updated and informed throughout the whole process. I really recommend him for any roofing repair needs!

Had my master bedroom and bathroom painted for the first time since the original wall paper was applied in 1963. Needless to say, it requires some work. Not only did Milton and his team come in with an extremely competitive quote, but they followed through with exceptional quality and service after winning the bid. They were able to complete the project in a day and a half, only because of having to wait for primer to dry before painting. That being said, the room came out magnificently and my wife and I could not be happier with the modern look! Keep up the amazing work, it speaks for itself!

My daughter and I hired Realtá Remodeling in November 2015 to make repairs to the interior and exterior of our home as we are preparing to sell it and we are so satisfied and impressed with Osman and his team that we are now having second thoughts about selling our home! The remodeling of our home was done absolutely perfectly and on time, everything that was listed in the contract was finished and Osman even made some touches to part of the house that were not included in the contract, which we were grateful for. We had work done to the majority of our house: Master restroom/bedroom (the shower was demolished, a new shower with tile was built, damaged sheetrock was repaired along with plumbing issues in the shower drain, countertops were refinished, leaks under the sinks were fixed, a hole in the bedroom wall was patched, the walls and ceiling were primed and painted and new carpet trim was installed.) Guest restroom (the bathtub was refinished, cabinets were replaced and new wood was installed under the sink where there was a leak, rotten baseboards were replaced.) Living/office/family/laundry room (the walls in each room were primed and painted, ceiling texture was perfectly matched, the wood frame of the windows were sanded, caulked, primed and painted, doors were replaced and painted, holes were patched.) Kitchen (countertops were refinished, new sink was installed, the walls and ceiling were primed and painted.) Exterior (rotten wood was replaced, metal was replaced and welded, both garage doors were replaced, rotten backyard siding was fixed, painting and priming were also done). We are so happy with Realtá Remodeling and Osman that we have referred him to numerous friends and family, my daughter and I highly recommend Realtá Remodeling if you are looking for an honest contractor who works hard to make you happy and follows through with the contract. Thank you Realtá Remodeling, Osman and your staff for making our remodeling process an easy one!

Mark painted my entire home, ceilings, walls, everything. Then he refinished and painted the cabinets. Then Mark got rid of all the carpet and did amazing tile work. It’s stunning. Very precise cuts on doorways and corners. He’s an artist. He replaced several fixtures as well. Faucets, toilets, new cabinets, etc. The home is truly a brand new paradise.

I just bought a new house and needed some work done around the house that the home builder wanted to charge me arms and legs for. Found Robert here and hired him to install 4 ceiling fans, porch lights, garage opener and door knobs for all the cabinets. He got everything done within a few hours. Reasonable price and high quality work! I'll definitely hire him again for future home improvement needs.

The 3 guys on the crew, Jose, Mario and Junior, were polite, courteous, and skilled hard workers. They were concerned about doing everything right so I would be satisfied in every way. I hired them to strip wallpaper and paint a bathroom and then paint walls and trim work in a high stairwell, game room and dining room. I am very pleased and would recommend them highly. I plan to call them for other remodeling needs in the future.

The Home Improvement Team is impressive from start to finish. The first meeting is information gathering, discussion and zero selling pressure. As the estimate is delivered to you you have clear understanding of what was discussed and the price of each piece of work. We started with a complete kitchen remodel and quickly expanded to a multi room process removing walls and installing support beams in attic. As everything progressed the team kept us informed all the way though with expectations of timing for each task. While impossible to keep everything clean, they were very respectful of the flooring and rooms not being worked on by sealing and covering with plastic and cleaning up each day after a day of work. Each member of the team is on the same page regardless of what piece of the puzzle they are completing, communication is key and these professionals have it and deliver! Highly recommended and WILL be calling on them again to work on new projects.

This was my first experience with Thumbtack and it was great. Alpha & Omega was quick to respond -- even on a weekend! They were efficient, helpful, professional, and interested in helping with my very small project. I needed a small area of shower tile carefully cut in order to access plumbing behind the wall. Their workman was punctual, and very courteous, taking care to cover his shoes when he came inside our house. He was knowledgeable about both tile and plumbing, so he understood the issues involved with our project. He did an excellent job and was conscientious about cleaning up afterwards. I think we good good value and great service. I would definitely hire them again.

Agustin Ramirez has been professional and extremely informative on the details of all of our projects. I initially hired him and his team to do multiple wall repairs based on recent plumbing work. Based on his references and his initial clear communications and progress on the work I decided to add on multiple projects which included painting nearly the entire condo, electrical work, and other essential home improvements. Agustin has decades of professional work experience and has sent me multiple daily photos of the job especially since I live out of town from where our rental property is located. I highly recommend Agustin for all aspects of home improvements.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.
