I’ve just begun the project with Ricky, but already I can see I’ll be really happy with the results. He’s very responsive and he listens. I have an existing site that needed modernizing for mobile platforms. I wanted to convert it to a responsive theme on WP, but completely lacked the technical skills to customize the css. Cue Ricky. Technically savvy, he immediately started creating pages and transferring content. Best of all, he’s making little improvements with layout as he goes. Very happy so far.

The team at Multi-World Technologies is brilliant! I would encourage anyone who needs a new website to give them a call. I have had bad experiences of web designers in the past and was really nervous about starting again but Yves was so friendly and approachable from the start, he really does go the extra mile to make sure you are 100% happy. They do it all ... logo/identity, nice designs, professional video & photos! I am thrilled with my website and the SEO help I have received. Great service and they definitely know their stuff. Thank you so much!

Turningstones is an effective (and enjoyable) partner in the implementation of social media, SEO, and content marketing strategies. Liz's web design skills also were a great asset as we made higher converting landing pages and some key changes to our website. We look forward to working with Turningstones again in the future.

I am extremely happy with the professionalism and writing skillset from Deb and her team. I purchased the business startup package which included a consultation, help with incorporation docs, business plan, and content for my website and sales brochures. They were so very detailed and helpful I can't say enough about how grateful I am. I also just bought the Best Bet resume package to help get my two grown sons out of my house! Exceptional service! Highly recommend!

There are four good arguments for hiring Spire Studio to build your professional website. First, you’ll get a totally custom look, unlike anyone else’s site. Second, you’ll be working with someone who understands current trends in both design and content; your website will present you at your best. Third, you’ll have the benefit of Spire’s web marketing expertise that will help your website get noticed. And fourth, the price is reasonable. I highly recommend Ed Roberts and Spire Studio. Paule gets it, quickly. Her copy is tack-sharp and on-target, usually with minimal revisions. Whether the assignment requires lengthy copy or short and tight copy, Paule delivers it. Sometimes she's needed to unravel technical content to make it understandable to non-technical people. She really shines in this category, too. You get what you pay for and you won't regret it.

We've used MJ & 999Designs Site for several of our business websites and they delivered quality work each and every single time. They are a do-it-all agency that have taken care of our social media, content marketing and made various new websites also repaired some old sites that we needed to update. His prices are very fair and I especially like that he's a real person in Pasadena so not using someone in India or Russia is a great and I don't have to worry about hacks or spam. He is a cool guy that explains things in details and very professional.

Meredith created web content for one of my clients. She spent about 20-25 minutes visiting with my client, armed with questions to bring out personality, and to gain an understanding of the services offered. The results were more than outstanding, she nailed it. She is extremely professional and completed the work in a timely manner. My client was happy, and I was happy with the content delivered. I will use Meredith for future jobs and highly recommend her services!

In 2004 Chris Taylor was contracted to do a website for my business, Lake Livingston Waterfront Properties. Although it was one of his first sites to build and he was not particularly knowledgeable about the real estate business, he took ownership of the project through conceptualization, design, content (with not only selling my product and informing my site visitors, but also SEO for page ranking in mind), development and finally getting it online for me. It turned out to not only be a beautiful website with colors I love to this day (his choosing) but also simple and extremely user friendly. I have had many compliments from other Realtors and clients as to the ease of use and how they thought it was one of the best in our area, if not the best. While there have been a few “tweaks” over the years with regard to SEO in order to remain at the number one and 2 spots on Yahoo and almost always Number 1, 2 or 3 on Google and a few other updates, it has basically worked for me over all these years bringing in millions of dollars of real estate sales. Even in the real estate downturn that we just finished with, the site was still there bringing in dollars and basically keeping me in business. Chris is in the process, and almost through, of building me a more modern site now with responsive design so we can capture more of the mobile market. Buyers these days want a web site experience that maximizes the screen space regardless of whether using a PC or some mobile device… tablet on down to a cell phone and that is what he is providing me with my new site. It too is beautiful and I look forward to getting it up. Chris is easy to work with, super intelligent, beyond what his resume’ may indicate, and any business he does work for, he will very quickly pick up on what the client(s) are trying to achieve and give them a very high quality solution. He is kind of a perfectionist so don’t expect short cuts. I am happy to recommend him and, any company he works for, after getting to know him and his work, will surely be happy to have him on staff. By the way, he kept my site updated for a number of years after completion but that is not included in the time frame he actually worked for me in the creation of and introduction of the site to the market. Cory is actually a former employ of ours. While he was with us he wrote all of our web content, contracts, and company email templates, edited all of our web content, contracts, and company email templates, and he was the copy editor for all of our clients. He's no longer employed by us directly, but we contract with him on our larger projects for content writing and editing. He's a pro, and he's always been willing to go above and beyond for us.

We've worked with Michael Moran on several large-scale projects over the past few years for our real estate websites in Sarasota, Florida. Our most recent project was for our newly released responsive wordpress site, which Michael guided us with incredible logic, knowledge and consistency, from inception to finish. We’re thrilled with his keen eye for detail, his work ethic, and the heart that he invested into developing 100s of pages of customized content and information. Our team is also thankful for his graphic design skills that went into our business logo, signs & more. We’re happy to provide a strong endorsement of Michael Moran for website development, and we’re very excited with the final product we now have at SarasotaParadise.com. –Craig Wilson, SarasotaParadise Team, 9/2015.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a web designer?

Your website is often the first thing your customers see when they’re searching for a business or service on the web. As the face of your organization, your website needs to be attractive and functional, offering the latest features that users now expect. To plan and design a site that both reflects your company’s mission and values and appeals to customers takes a professional web designer. While free online services can help people set up websites, web designers can provide a unique solution made specifically to meet customers’ personal or business needs.

Most web designers offer a wide variety of services to make your website aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. Modern web design must be mobile-friendly and scalable, capable of expanding to include a blog, social media sites, and even video streaming; web designers are experts at integrating various web technologies. They can build the site, add functionality, test it, launch it on a live server, and track and maintain its performance.

In addition to web design and graphic design, some web design providers also offer development and security services, including search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing and management, logo design, site maintenance, domain registration and hosting, protection against malware, and digital marketing and content services.

How much do web designers charge?

The average cost for hiring a web designer varies greatly depending on the scope of the work, which may range from building a site from scratch to rebranding an existing one, as well as the amount of content and graphics the designer will create. In general, the more complex the project, the more time the design agency will have to spend. Because web designers often work on an hourly basis, the longer the project, the higher the costs; you can count on the web designer spending at minimum 10 hours to create a very basic website with just a handful of pages with few elements. Prices also depend on the designer’s skill set, the process, and the company’s rates. In general, the national average cost for a basic website package starts at $500, but a customized website can cost as much as $2,000 or more. Here are typical average hourly rates, broken out by the complexity of the work:

          • Basic layout and user interface: $15-$40 per hour
          • Content management system design: $20-$50 per hour
          • Custom website design with custom code: $45-$75 per hour

What should you look for in a website designer?

A professional web designer creates the look and feel of your website, collaborating with you to choose colors, creating logos and other branding materials, establishing page layouts, and creating sample pages. An important part of web design is making sure the site is functional, meets your goals, and is easy for users to navigate. When you’re looking to hire a web designer, start by reviewing the person’s portfolio. Look for samples of work that match what you envision for your website, including experience building the types of pages or features you want. Make sure the web designer is familiar with your industry and understands both industry trends and web design trends — an old-fashioned or out-of-touch site will turn customers away rather than intrigue them.

Because web designers tend to work as freelancers on a project basis, they must be excellent communicators, willing to manage their own work, and available on your schedule. Some critical skills, such as working collaboratively and responding enthusiastically to feedback, aren’t core to good web design, but make working with a web designer much easier. Finally, look for a web designer who has cross-functional knowledge, such as understanding marketing and conversion rate optimization in addition to web design.

What do you look for in a web design company?

The web design company you choose must be able to interpret your company’s mission and identity and turn it into an appealing website that connects with potential customers. They must help you reach your target audience and meet your business goals. A web design agency should have on staff both talented web designers, with fresh ideas and extensive technical and creative skills, and a marketing team that knows how to drive traffic to your site, encourage visitor engagement, and convert visitors into customers. Web designers should be able to build in search optimization and integrate your site with a content management system and e-commerce tools. Look, too, for a website design company that understands responsive design and can optimize your website for mobile devices and desktop browsers. The right web design company understand current design and website trends, has experience building sites in a variety of industries (not just yours), and has an expansive portfolio of live websites. Finally, don’t simply hire the cheapest bidder — in web design, as in all things, you get what you pay for.

How do you hire a web designer?

You’ve determined that the best way to create a professional, modern, mobile-friendly new website is to hire a professional web designer to build it. To hire the best person for the job — and to get the web design that best fits your company’s identity — it’s important to ask a few key questions:

          • What’s the scope of the work? Will the website be basic with just a few pages about your company, its services, and contact information? Or will it also have an e-commerce section for online shopping, a blog, or content for visitors to download? Before you hire a web designer, make sure you have a thorough, specific list of the components you must have the designer include in the web design.
          • What do you want your website to look like? Consider websites that are similar to the one you’d like to build, ideally in the same industry or serving similar types of customers. Build a set of examples of types of pages, design aspects, and website features that you can hand off to the web designer — the person you hire should have experience creating websites with the features you want. If they don’t have the right skill set, they’re not the right pro for you.
          • What’s the web designer’s start-to-finish process? What will the final deliverable be? Before you hire someone, make sure their availability works with your timeline and that their process meets your expectations. Most important is finding a web designer who will work collaboratively with you to create a successful online presence.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
