I hired Four Seasons to replace an old fence, to remove two broken down decks and pavers, and to lay down new sod in my backyard. They gave me an estimate on the fence based on information I sent them, but I specifically asked them to go to the property to quote the rest of the work as it was fairly custom removal work. Antonio (the individual I interfaced with) went to the property and quoted the extra removal, which was broken down between man hours and dump fees. I selected them based heavily on price as this is a rental property for me and I need costs low as possible. The job took a little longer than expected, which I was ok with, but about halfway through the job, Antonio informed me they would need to charge me more because of extra man hours and extra dump fees. I asked him how this wasn't included in the original quote and he told me it was due to things "under the deck" that they didn't know about. I never got much clarification on what that was other than the additional prep work required to lay down the sod. But again, that's something I would definitively expect to be included in the original quote. In principle, I get very frustrated with anyone that agrees to a quoted price, and tries to ask for more later. If I ask for something different after the fact, and the original quote is no longer valid, sure, I would absolutely expect more to be charged. I'm not going as far as saying that this was a bait and switch. I simply think he underestimated the time and quantity of debris during the quotation phase. Its unfortunate for sure, but not a cost I feel the consumer should ever absorb. The frustrating part is the quality of the work was good for what I paid (or agreed to pay). I would have liked to have kept this company in my "vendor list", but from this experience I would not hire them again.

Clif, it is disappointing that you would give a 2 star review (over an additional 150.00 charge for dumping extra debris) after the amount of work that we completed, the QUALITY of work and at the PRICE that we charged. We NEVER overcharge our customer for "the unknown" items that we might encounter during clean up projects such as this one but we do expect them to be flexible and reasonable if a small deviation from the original quote is needed (in this case $150.00 dumping fee). We originally quoted to install a fence, then later you asked for a quote to remove pavers and two decks we quoted you accordingly. After we cleared out all of the debris we noticed overgrown ivy on top of the decks, an extra large doll/dog house that had to be unscrewed because of how it was constructed, under the decks were additional rocks, stones and more pavers. We invoiced you for the extra dumping fee ONLY not the 4hrs of labor that was incurred. Additionally, we paid $70.00 extra to get a higher quality "green" grass sod instead of the dormant sod that most vendors are using now. We never asked to be compensated for that. I guess we could have left the debris there and adhered to our original quote which would have meant that we would have installed dormant sod on top of the rocks, stone and other debris that was uncovered after the decks were removed - but that's NOT who we are! We will always do the right thing and if that means that we need to ask our customers to pay a little more than what was expected (in this case $150.00) then we don't feel that was such a dishonest or horrible request. If asking for an additional 150.00 for dumping additional debris caused a 2 star review and caused us to not be on your "vendor list" then respectfully, we were probably never going to be on that list to start with and would have still have received a 2 star review. As a contractor, we are always asked for a discount or lower price because of all of the business that the customer can send our way - but after we complete the project we never hear from them again.
