Introduction: I cherish the English language; it's in my DNA. The only child of Rice University English graduates, I was taught from the cradle that "a gerund takes the possessive." Correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and the finer points of writing are necessities--not luxuries. A former college faculty member, I am privy to what educators WANT to read and WHY. Students and parents alike deem me to be a "teacher's teacher" with an eagle eye for errors. Although I must make a living, improving and polishing written documents is a true labor of love. I am a member of SOTS: Save Our Tongue Society!

Mrs. Jackson helped me pass the second semester of my freshman composition class at Sam Houston. I always thought I was smart but realized I had never been taught the ins and outs of writing to make it grammatically correct. She worked with me on several papers, even short ones. I found out that my instructor was even wrong about a few things like hyphens and commas. I recommend Mrs. Jackson to any student who wants their papers to be very perfect. Nick James

Starla was generous in sharing her expertise with the English language and helped me improve the writing quality of my dissertation. As a non-native English speaker with a reasonably good grasp of the spoken and written English language, I had reached a dead end while improving the quality of my dissertation. Her incredible editorial help was instrumental in helping me complete my dissertation to the satisfaction of my committee.

FAQs

  • Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

First and foremost, never end a sentence (like the one above) with a preposition! Thumbtack.com SHOULD have written: "Tell us about a recent job you did of which you are particularly proud." I'm quite "proud" to have noticed that site error! In March 2011, I edited a doctoral dissertation for a non-native English speaker. His formal English education was almost too good! What a pleasure it was to teach an eager learner the finer points of grammar and native English usage. His professors approved all changes, and he now holds a Ph.D. in Education.

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Writing, whether creative- or research-oriented, requires as much skill as mathematics. It is like a puzzle. For example, there is a vast difference in punctuating a compound sentence, a complex sentence, and a simple sentence with a compound predicate. Commas are not ice-cream sprinkles in a written document! Agreement of subject and verb, prepositions and pronouns, and verb tenses are of the utmost importance. You represent yourself through your writing, and the reader is your "grader." Make an A!
